H8-Bit

Origin

A childhood friend of Vic Stone, Keiji Otari was handed the passwords for high-level STAR Labs access by his friend. Using them to hack STAR and sell their secrets, Keiji was incarcerated in a juvenile facility, where he was frequently attacked by fellow inmates, and forbidden to use computers. Finding a Game Boy, he repairs it and, by becoming proficient with it, discovers an 8-bit universe into which he is able to escape. However, he is beaten to death before he can flee. A code version of him takes the name H8-Bit and takes up residence in the 8-bit universe.

Creation

H8-Bit was created by John Semper, Jr. and Will Conrad. He made his first appearance in Cyborg #11.

Major Story Arcs

H8-Bit

H8-Bit is accidentally confronted by Cyborg in his 8-bit universe, inside a real version of the game they created as youths, Perilandria. Seizing the opportunity, he attempts to direct the perils of Perilandria against Cyborg as revenge for how Cyborg indirectly caused him to be imprisoned and then apparently forgot him. They fight, and when Cyborg attempts to escape he pursues him to Detroit. He begins to attack people in the city, claiming he is seeking revenge, but is dragged back to Perilandria by Cyborg. He reveals that he has been dead all along, and fades away when Cyborg forcibly crashes the game.

Powers and Abilities

H8-Bit is the digital ghost of an expert hacker and programmer. He has electricity-based powers of uncertain provenance or function. He is able to fire energy blasts from his hands, the effects of which are unclear; potentially he simply pixelates things. Despite being a code, he is able to survive in the real world through unknown means.
