History
Princess Ororo of Themyscira is a metamutant with the ability to manipulate the weather. When Ororo was just a child, her father David‘s colleague, Professor Malcolm, discovered a golden statuette while on a diving expedition in the Mediterranean, and returned with it to the mainland. He was cursed by the god Poseidon for doing so, and his life fell into ruin shortly thereafter. In an attempt to rid himself of the curse.
The professor booked the Arabian Princess out of Cairo, and set sail with the Munroe family with the intentions of dropping the statuette into the sea, where he originally found it. The professor would not be successful, however, as Poseidon caused a massive storm that destroyed the Arabian Princess, killing the professor, David, and Ororo’s mother, N’Dare. As Ororo herself sunk under the waves, an Amazonian rescue party led by Queen Hippolyta came upon the devastation in a ship, and Hippolyta rescued the child from certain death.
Hippolyta adopted Ororo, and raised her along with her daughter, Princess Diana, on the island nation of Themyscira. When Princess Ororo entered puberty, her metamutant ability to control the weather first manifested, and her Amazonian sisters taught her to forge a lasso comprised of lightning that forced those ensnared by it to tell the truth. Ororo took the mantle of Wonder Woman, and left Themyscira for “Man’s World”, where she would accomplish numerous heroic acts as part of the JLX, eventually taking the place of the Aqua Mariner as it’s leader.
Wonder Woman eventually learned of the murder of her parents following a fierce confrontation with Poseidon at sea. Poseidon took Ororo to his secret treasure trove, where she discovered the statuette responsible for the god’s murderous rampage twenty-five years earlier. Poseidon revealed that he had been responsible for sinking the ship, and killing her parents. Ororo
told the god that he was foolish, because Professor Malcolm and her parents had made it their work to prolong the history of the Olympian Gods, while others turned their backs to their teachings. What Poseidon had perceived as a mere act of thievery was their way to ensure that the gods were remembered by mortals. Poseidon immediately felt great shame for the act, and realized that Wonder Woman was telling the truth. He released the amazon, however Ororo took no pleasure from his regret. Instead, she wished for the peace of those slain callously by Poseidon’s hand.
