 John Evans was the night watchman at Crossingham’s Lodging House, where Annie Chapman lived in the days leading up to her murder. He was on duty on the night that she was murdered. Between about 1:30 and 1:45 in the morning of the 8th of September he was sent by Timothy Donovan down to the kitchen of the lodging house to get Chapman’s doss money from her. She admitted she didn’t have it, and at about 1:50 Evans escorted her out of the kitchen, and she asked him to be sure her bed would be held for her. He watched her walk up Little Paternoster Row and towards Spitalfields Church. He reported that she seemed the worst for drink. This was the last time he saw her alive. Â

He also reported that the conclusion of Chapman’s fight with Eliza Cooper had taken place at the Lodging House, contrary to most other testimony that asserted it took place at The Britannia, a local pub.Â
