The Devil’s Apprentice
Kylie Shrike is the leader of the Shrike Grendel clan. They take over the Laredo territory after the vampiric massacre of almost all the Crow Grendels that lived there before.
He is an old friend of Lydia Garcia, one of the only survivors of the Crows, and welcomes her to live with them. He respects her fighting skills and wisdom, and is a bit smitten with her. He helps her train the other Crow survivor, Aaron. Aaron has red eyes like a vampire because his father, John Crow, was turning into a vampire as he was giving birth to him (men can become pregnant in this time). Garcia wants to turn Aaron into a weapon against John; Shrike is not sure that is the best thing to do with Aaron’s life but accedes to her wishes.
Years later, John Crow and some vampires attack the clan. They kill Garcia and badly hurt Shrike. Aaron tells Kylie that he’s going off for revenge. Kylie wishes him well.
