Origin
Lightning, was originally born with the name Claire Farron, a resident of Cocoon. Lightning also had a younger sister Serah. In her early youth, both sisters father would pass away, and only a few years later, both still young, their mother would also die. Claire would attempt to adopt the name Lightning, to push herself into her new role as guardian to her younger sibling. She would become more cold, and guarded. Her attempts to become more adult like in order to protect and nurture her sister, would be too much for a young individual and emotional distance would be created between Lightning and Serah. Lightning would pursue a career in the military, and eventually become a member of the Guardian Corps.
At some point Serah and her fiancé Snow would become engaged, despite Lightnings distrust and cynicism towards Snow. Serah unfortunately had also been branded as an l’Cie by a mystical and powerful entity, the fal’Cie Anima. Resigning as a member of the Guardian Corps, Lightning would look for answers and a way to save her sister. Eventually she would come across Oerba Yun Fang, Hope, Sazh Katzroy, and Oerba Dia Vanille, all of them along with Snow also branded as l’Cie.
Creation
Lightning is a fictional character created for the Final Fantasy franchise. The character would first appear in the role playing fantasy video game Final Fantasy XIII, released in 2009. She would be the main protagonist of the Square Enix produced game. The game and Lightnings character would be fairly popular and used in other mediums and media.
Lightning was created primarily by Motomu Toriyama and Tetsuya Nomura.

Powers and Abilities
Lightning is a trained and experienced fighter. Particularly skilled in the use of a gun blade, unarmed combat and trained in other various weapons. After being marked as an l’Cie, Lightning slowly starts to gain vague mystical abilities, as well as being generally enhanced. Later on she also acquire the ability to summon a powerful magical ally, the Eidolon Odin.
