Long John Silver is the former quartermaster (officer responsible for the food, clothing, and equipment of sailors) of the infamous pirate Captain Flint. He claims to have lost his leg serving honorably under âthe immortal Hawkeâ It should be noted that Silver lies a lot, or at least exaggerates, and much of the history he give about himself would be impossible. One thing is for sure is that later in life he finds that he can only find a ship by being a ships cook.
He is a hardworking and likable seaman.  He readily serves as substitute father to young Jim Hawkins when taken on in the position of shipâs cook during an expedition in search of a buried treasure. During the voyage Silver reveals his true nature as that of a vicious buccaneer. His parrotâs name is Captain Flint.  Â
