Morty Smith

Origin

Morty is the dim-witted grandson of Rick Sanchez. He is fifteen years old.

Appearance

Morty is a young adolescent. He has short brown hair that is carefully combed around his head and styled straight. Unlike many other characters on the show, Morty’s head is round and roughly the form and size of a round. He doesn’t have a visible neck, either. He usually dresses in a yellow shirt, blue slacks, and white sneakers. Morty also has a noticeable stutter (even when quiet) and a monotone voice.

Personality

Morty is a kind, naive young boy who is easily influenced. He’s been labeled as ‘challenged,’ and he struggles in school. In addition, he stutters a lot. Morty has demonstrated to be a good listener and follows commands despite his apparent lack of intelligence. He is the ideal companion for Rick because of these qualities. He’s taken with Jessica, a fellow student.

Creation

Morty was originally created by Justin Roiland as part of a parody of “Back to the Future” in the short “The Real Animated Adventures of Doc and Mharti”. The character and voice were retooled with Dan Harmon’s help for “Rick and Morty”, a cartoon on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim.

The comic version of Morty soon followed, written by Zac Gorman and drawn by CJ Cannon.

Character Evolution

The television version of Morty takes place in Dimension C-137 while the comic book version is in Dimension C-132. There does not seem to be much difference between the two versions outside the adventures each partakes in.

Major Story Arcs

Dimension C-132

Desperate to show his father Jerry that jobs are stupid, Morty teams up with Rick to make money on the intergalactic stock exchange. Due to legal complications, Rick can’t have his name on the registration documents. Using a device that Morty believes looks into the future, Rick makes him and Morty billions of dollars, at which point Morty believes that he doesn’t need Rick anymore. Morty then finds out that the device does not see the future but combines (and destroys) successful, alternate timelines. He and Rick are arrested and taken before the Time Court.
