Origin

When the yacht of Colonel Trent wrecks in on the coast of uncharted Africa it looks dire for his crew and passengers as they try to make it though thick jungle to find civilization,, particularly so when Nina and her brother Danny become separated from the rest and find themselves at the mercy of savage natives.
 
However at the last moment they are saved by a man wearing a red mask, this mystery man turns out to be the rightful ruler of the land who has had his kingdom overrun by hostile forces, and now battles them as the Red Mask. While doing this he also helps the stranded Americans.

The first black comic book costumed hero, who while shown as white on the cover was shown as black in the stories, The Red Mask by Geo. West (probably a pseudonym) lasted for the four issues of Best Comics starting in 1939 and was never seen again.
