In his debut story, Scoop Cody is a reporter sent on an assignment by his editor. His assignment is to track down a fugitive mob boss named King Carr. Going to the office of a known front for King Carr, ACME PROTECTO COMPANY, he attempts to discover Carr’s whereabouts by intimidating the by placing a finger in his jacket to suggest he has a gun. He is soon overwhelmed by numbers when a mysterious man in a white mask gets the drop on the mobsters. Cody thanks the mystery man who leaves him a calling card. On inspection, it simply says, MARVEL.
Cody leaves to follow a hunch. Going to a power station in the country, he finds King Carr, who is an electrician and used to work there. Cody is waylaid by Carr’s thugs. The mob boss sets Cody up to be electrocuted, but before he can do so, The Marvel arrives and saves him. Cody then delivers King Carr to the police. The reporter is left to contemplate the identity of The Marvel.
