Meyer Qayd had the power to attract dirt, meaning he was constantly followed by a small cloud of dust and dirt. Although he could mentally command how big and dense the cloud could be, he was never able to completely get rid of it. This hindered his chances of gaining friends.Â

When Meyer heard that the Legion of Super-Heroes was holding tryouts, he saw this as a chance to be liked by others. Calling himself the Mess, he tried out for the Legion, but, while amused by his abilities, they saw little usefulness in its application in the battlefield and he was politely rejected.
