Dr. Walter Michaels and his wife Christine were working on a process of transmitting vitamins directly to the body through microwaves. When Walter tested the process on himself, he was mutated to a superhuman. He can extract thermal energy from others to increase his own speed and strength. The process is often lethal to his victims. He is effectively a thermal vampire. He originally could only walk but “Quasar” #21 (April, 1991) depicted him flying, a new power.
