Winter was a she-wolf whom the North Wind took an immediate liking to as her fur was as white and glistening as the snows of his land. He took on the form of a great and puissant wolf which she instantly fell in love with. They spent two seasons together before the winds changed and he left her. She eventually died of a broken heart.
Winter had seven cubs to the North Wind, six of whom left after her death to find their father. The seventh, the runt of the litter, would grow up to be Bigby, the Big Bad Wolf of legend, who never forgave his father for his mothers death. Her six other sons are still alive, and her name was passed on to her first born granddaughter Winter. Ironically it is her granddaughter who’s chosen from the group to be the new North Wind.
