Origin
Yakumo’s fairly average life as a Japanese highschooler was brought to an end when he met Pai, the last of the Sanjiyan Unkara, a race of mystic beings who possessed three eyes and the ability to bestow immortality upon others. Pai had been discovered in the mountains of Tibet by Yakumo’s absentee archaeologist father who promised to help her become human, but died before he could fulfill his promise and passed the obligation onto his son instead. Though at first Yakumo found all of this implausible, he was forced to accept it as true when Pai saved him from a fatal injury by revealing both her third eye and a second personality that absorbed his soul, thus rendering him immortal.
Character Evolution
Though he at first attempted to resume his normal life, Yakumo realised that this wasn’t possible when demons, seeking immortality through Pai, attacked him and his friends. Knowing that helping Pai achieve humanity was the only way to regain his own and his old life, the two set off together to achieve this end.
Eventually, Yakumo and Pai’s quest to become human is eclipsed by their conflict with Kaiyanwang, the sinister being who eradicated the rest of the Sanjiyan race.
Yakumo is generally easy-going and willing to help those in need or to forgive people who have wronged him. Though he is initially angered by the chaos that Pai brought into his life, he appreciates that she saved him, and develops a romantic interest in her. This leads to a fairly complex love triangle, given Pai’s split personality and that Yakumo becomes oddly popular with women over the course of the series.
Powers & Abilities
Despite being virtually unkillable, Yakumo is initially a somewhat frail human being and completely outclassed by the supernatural horrors that pursue Pai. He tends to overcome these long odds in the series’ early days through clever exploitation of his immortal body, but as the series progresses he develops physical fighting skills and magic prowess that allow him to take on most threats on an even footing.
