Carrie Chapman Catt

Overview

Carrie Chapman Catt was born in Ripon, Wisconsin, USA, on January 9, 1859. A curious child, she always questioned her parents about gender differences and why woman were not entitled to the same rights as men? Extremely bright, she was not only the only woman to graduate from Iowa State College, but the class Valedictorian. Experiencing sexism first hand, with her second husband she was able to fight back, aiding in pushing and campaigning for women’s suffrage. She held the position of Head of the National American Woman Suffrage Association for two terms.  She was also the founder of the League of Women Voters and also the first woman to receive American Hebrew Medal.
