Not much is known about Benjamin Russell, only that he is a runaway teen from Boston who fell into a coma when his mutant powers manifested.

Major Story Arcs
After his mutant powers manifest, Benjamin falls into a coma and is taken to the Weisman Institute. While there, Gamesmaster allows Siryn to view files on Benjamin, leading her and X-Force to believe that Shatterstar is really Benjamin, as their records/vitals are an identical match.
It is never learned if the two are the same person, but Benjamin’s body is used to transfer Shatterstar’s soul when Shatterstar dies in a war 100 years into the future. From that point, Benjamin was no longer himself but Shatterstar.
