Freckles started as an apparently 6 year old boy in the comic strip Freckles and His Friends by writer artist Merrill Blosser starting in 1915 and going for many years, eventually he grew first into a teenager and then a Youngman.
The strips were reprinted in Famous Funnies and Crackajack Comics.
