Origin

Adela Negrete is a young woman of the landed gentry who lives in Jalisco, next to her brother Captain Negrete. After her brother is captured and killed by Tigre del Bajio, the leader of a band of outlaws, Adela vows to get revenge and starts a search for her brother’s killers.

Before she is able to confront Tigre however she finds herself having to deal with other groups of bandits, and the army of Dictator Victoriano Huerta, it is during this that she joins a group of guerrillas and becomes known as a bold and resourceful Adelita. (woman revolutionary warrior)

Creators

Created by José G. Cruz the series Adelita y las Guerrillas was started in 1936 and along with being Mexico’s preeminent comic strip heroine, which also served a venue for crossovers with other Cruz creations such as Juan Sin Miedo (Juan The Fearless), Nancy y la Banda Escarlata (Nancy and the Scarlet Band), and y el Monje Negro (the Black Monk).

Published in three difference magazines, starting in 1953 José G. Cruz started printing Adelina’s collected and new adventures in comics from his publishing house. This continued until 1959.

Her adventures were also published in Columbia, Venezuela, and Ecuador after their initial run in Mexico ended.
