When a wolf man moves into Wild Valley, many of Aunt Snerd’s neighbors move. With no one to deal with, she goes in to debt. She is eventually kidnapped by the wolf man so that she can’t fight foreclosure on her ranch. She is kept in a cave under a creek. She somehow manages to write a message on a calf’s hoof and release it. She waits in her prison until Charlie McCarthy and Mortimer Snerd find her. (They were the intended recipients.) The boys fall in the cave and take the wolf man by surprise. Aunt Snerd takes advantage and chucks her ball and chain on the wolf man’s foot. They discover that he is Simon Saddlehorn, a local land investor intent on taking her farm.
Aunt Snerd tries to help the boys trick the wolf man’s bandits but they see right through the ruse. Aunt Snerd runs to get the sheriff while the bandits try to kill Charlie and Mortimer. Aunt Snerd arrives at her shot-up house and the bandits are arrested. She is thrilled to find that the boys are safe, having hid in her cast-iron oven.
