Major Story Arcs

Barbara Wilson was the daughter of Peg, a close friend of Alfred Pennyworth. When Peg died in a car accident, Alfred stepped in as Barbara’s “uncle” supporting his young “niece” and sent her to Oxford College. When she was kicked out for motorcycle racing, she sought out her uncle Alfred, and was welcomed to stay at Wayne Manor by Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson. There she secretly continued motorcyle racing, this time to earn enough money to “free” Alfred from his life of servitude. When Alfred contracted a fatal disease, he entrusted her with a CD that she was to make sure was sent to his brother Wilfred. However Barbara hacked the CD and learned the secrets of Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson, and that they were Batman and Robin.

Barbara entered the Batcave and created a costume based on Batman and Robin’s suit-designs and became Batgirl. There she helped the Dynamic Duo defeat Poison Ivy, Mr Freeze, and Bane. Upon the defeat of Mr. Freeze, Batman recieved a cure for Alfred’s disease, and Barbara decided to live with her uncle in Gotham and continue her adventures as Batgirl.

Film

Batman and Robin (1997)

Barbara Wilson, the biological niece of Alfred Pennyworth, becomes Batgirl and fights Poison Ivy and helps Robin fight Bane, as well as combating Mr. Freeze. This characterization is based on Barbara Gordon, but the producers felt the Commissioner was too minor a character and linked her with Alfred instead.
