Bel-Dann

Bel-Dann was created by writer Chris Claremont and artist John Byrne.

Colonel Bel-Dann of the Kree Empire was charged by the Supreme Intelligence to observe the Shi’ar Empire’s judgment and subsequent execution of the Phoenix, who was then believed to be the mutant Jean Grey. To save “Grey,” Professor Charles Xavier invoked the Arin’nn Haelar, a duel between the accused and the accuser; if the X-Men managed to defeat the Shi’ar Imperial Guard, Phoenix would be spared. Skrull Empress Rk’lll and the Supreme Intelligence ordered their respective representatives, Warlord Raksor and Bel-Dann, to monitor the trial. During the ensuing battle between the mutants and the Imperial Guard, Raksor used his shape-changing abilities to take on the appearance of Storm, intending to kill the X-Man Wolverine. However, the Canadian mutant’s heightened senses allowed him to penetrate the Skrull’s disguise, and he attacked him. Bel-Dann saved Raksor, stunning Wolverine with a Kree weapon. The Kree colonel reminded his Skrull opposite that they were meant to be observers rather than participants in the battle. Raksor, feeling his honor was insulted, attacked Bel-Dann.

The two battled in the catacombs beneath the Blue Area of the Moon for months, neither gaining a clear advantage over the other. Finally, Uatu the Watcher interrupted their combat to relay communications from their respective leaders. Empress Rk’lll and the Supreme Intelligence had mutually decided to find a resolution for the eons-old war between the Kree and the Skrull through singles combat. Both Bel-Dann and Raksor accepted the honor, and shook hands as they prepared for battle.

Meanwhile, after the events of The X-Men #137 – The Fate Of The Phoenix!, the Inhumans were forced to relocate Attilan, their great refuge, to the oxygen-rich Blue Area of the Moon. On the day of the wedding of Black Bolt, king of the Inhumans, to Medusa, with the Fantastic Four in attendance, the combat between Raksor and Bel-Dann in the catacombs created tremors through Attilan. Investigating, the Fantastic Four and the Inhumans found the two alien combatants and engaged them. However, the Watcher appeared and informed both Mister Fantastic and Black Bolt of what was transpiring. The two group leaders formulated a plan, which they set into motion. The Fantastic Four and the Inhumans engaged both Bel-Dann and Raksor; rather than take advantage of the combat to attack one another, the two warriors worked together to defeat the heroic interlopers. Uatu appeared on the scene, declaring the Kree-Skrull War over, and both sides victorious. The Watcher then sent them back to their respective Empires to report the outcome.

At some point, Bel-Dann was promoted to the rank of General and made the leader of the Kree Consolidated Peace Battalion, answerable to Zey-Rogg. Acting in this capacity, he convinced Genis-Vell, then calling himself Legacy, to destroy a negabomb hidden in Link 313, a Shi’ar space station. This was apparently a ruse to frame Legacy for the destruction of Link 313. Later, Bel-Dann and his squad were defeated by Legacy at Glib’s Grog, and Bel-Dann revealed to Legacy Zey-Rogg’s whereabouts.

General Bel-Dann’s subsequent whereabouts have yet to be revealed.

Bel-Dann is a pink-skinned member of the Kree alien race. His military background has made him a brilliant strategist, as well as affording him proficiency in both hand-to-hand and armed combat. During the ritual combat to determine the winner of the Kree-Skrull War, Bel-Dann was given access to advanced Kree weaponry, including multi-blasters and Kree battle armor.
