Armed with the Beyondersbane, an extra-terrestrial weapon that allowed the entity to channel all the energy back into the Beyonder, the demon Bitterhorn was sent by Mephisto to gather 99 villains, called the Legion Accursed, to destroy the Beyonder. All the villains were given the mark of the Beyondersbane and whomever touched the Beyonder first would kill him, but the Thing interfered and the Beyonder was spared .
