Butch was created by Jim Goad and Jim Blanchard.

Character Development

Butch is a long distance truck driver who spends most of his time with his friend and coworker Petey. Butch is the more aggressive, assertive and dominant friend of the two. Both friends are extremely bigoted, toward homosexuals in particular. Early on, Butch tells Petey that he once killed a man for making advances toward him. The man was a fellow driver, and Butch had been paired up with him for a job. Butch explains that the man put his hands on him, squeezing his leg, and that Butch lost his temper and stabbed the man to death with an ice pick. He also claims to have dumped the body in the Louisiana bayou.

While on the road together, Butch and Petey end up spending a night in the same room at a hotel. Over the course of this night the pair have sex several times, only to wake up feeling awkward and full of shame in the morning. After spending all day avoiding the subject, with tensions mounting between the pair, Butch and Petey attack each other. They are then arrested and thrown in jail, where they take advantage of their shared cell and resume their sexual activities from the previous night. In spite of their physical intimacy with each other, the pair vehemently deny – both aloud and in private – that they are homosexual. Instead they rationalise their actions, and appease their consciences by going on a violent spree, killing any homosexual men they encounter while still enjoying a sexual relationship with each other.
