Carol ribs Mildred for coming home late but learns that her roommate has taken a job as a party girl. Carol warns against the job but is shocked to learn that Mildred makes really good money her first night. She accompanies Mildred to meet George Godfrey, a party girl supplier. Carol reluctantly agrees to attend a salesmen’s convention and dances with an elderly gentleman named Mr. Grant. He gets so tired that he falls asleep and she tries to tiptoe away without waking him. She is grabbed and accused of being a thief. Mr. Grant awakens and states that nothing has been taken and Carol is released. She slaps the man across the face and storms out of the party.
Carol walks home to vent some of her anger. The man from the party catches up to her and introduces himself as Phil Wayne, a private detective that works parties to protect attendees. He explains that he has fallen for Carol and hopes to see her again. Carol doubts it, as she plans on never working a party again.
Phil calls Carol repeatedly. She has to admit that she likes him and finally agrees to go out with him. They have a fun relationship but she can’t stand that his job always seems to get in the way. He stands her up on her birthday and she lets Mildred talk her into going to a party with her as a form of revenge on Phil. Carol agrees.
At the party, Carol sees that Phil is working, too. He tries to talk to her but she avoids him by latching onto a man named Cunningham. She asks him for a dance and he agrees, as long as they go out for some air first. He gets fresh with Carol and she pushes him away. He hits a wall and falls down dead. Everyone at the party accuses her of killing the old man but Phil. He stays true to her and takes her home. Carol is pleased to learn later that Cunningham suffered a heart attack at that moment and she won’t face charges. In the end, she learns that Phil may stand her up but he’ll also stand by her.
