Catalina de Erauso y Pérez de Galarraga (San Sebastián, Guipúzcoa; c.1585 or 1592 — Cotaxtla, near Orizaba, New Spain; c.1650), popularly known as Monja Alférez (the Lieutenant Nun), was a soldier, nun and writer. She is one of the most legendary and controversial characters of the Spanish Golden Age. For nearly 400 years, the myth of the prodigious Monja Alférez has lived on through historical studies, biographical accounts, novels, movies, and comics.
