During one of his robberies, Batman and Robin chased him.
He went hiding in to a storage room. He didn`t know it contained radium.
When he found out he was going to die in 3-4 weeks, he swore vengeance on Batman and Robin, and concocted a plot to kill them.
With peculiar deathtraps, of course.
“As I stepped trough a doorway to my end, so will he.”
He tasked his gang to do the job for him, after he had passed away. He did. And they failed.
