Crash has made a life for himself as a gangster, using his ill-gotten gains to provide for himself and his children. However, while he has tried to shield his kids from his life, his daughter Natasha was smart enough to discern the truth at a young age. Things went south for him when he enlisted the villain Skyhook for a job. Once the job was completed, he withheld Skyhook’s cut and gave some of the proceeds to his daughter. Natasha, already aware of how he got the money, refuses to take it. When his younger brother John Henry confronts him about the stolen money, Clay confesses he stole the money from Skyhook. John Henry admonishes his brother for his actions, and Clay responds by kicking him and his girlfriend out. However, Skyhook, angry at being slighted, gets even by kidnapping Crash’s younger child, Zeke.

When he learns his son is missing, Crash begins amassing money and firepower to go after Skyhook, However, the Metropolis PD raids one of his arms deals and arrests him. Because his crimes were so severe, he is locked up in the metahuman prison on Stryker’s Island. Many years later, he is able to escape from jail alongside dozens of other super-criminals when Ultrawoman’s attack on Metropolis destroys the prison. Still seeking vengeance for his son, Clay returns to his mission of gathering the resources to battle Skyhook while simultaneously hiding from the authorities.

Eventually, Crash manages to find Skyhook before anyone else, and uses some of of his own merchandise to fight him. As his weapons have no effect on his foe, Crash is nearly killed. however, Superwoman, Steel, and Natasha save him. Crash tries to go after Skyhook again, but Steel knocks him out. Once Superwoman drops Skyhook, Steel delivers Crash to the authorities to serve the rest of his sentence.
