Custard

Origin

Custard is a cynical feline who lives in a house with a large garden, and who enjoys spending his time annoying fellow pet, the dog Roobarb. Despite this mild antagonism, the pair do manage to get along from time to time.

Creation

Custard was created in 1974 by writer Grange Calveley and animator Bob Godfrey as a supporting cast member in Roobarb, a series of short cartoons aimed at children and originally produced for BBC1. Actor Richard Briers provided the series’ narration and all character voices. Roobarb and Custard both transferred to comics, gaining a strip in TV Comic. The cartoon was revived in the 2000s, with Custard now sharing joint billing.
