Dr. Ulysses N. Verde was once a highly respected scientist who tried to unlock the secret of the Cherenkov-Kirby reaction, a biological nuclear reaction by which many superheroes derived their powers from. His assistant Greta was one of the very few who actually received powers from C-K, in her case: gravity-control. Not long after Greta had been empowered, the US state department found an interest in getting super-powered soldiers, and Verde and Greta were abducted and put into government custody.
During his imprisonment, he began reading an Ayn Rand novel(only reading he was allowed) over and over again, which seemed to strongly influence him(that and the drugs in his food) and gave him a new life-philosophy. He decided to take the name Dr. Universe, and eventually escaped with Greta, now calling herself Greta Gravity. Wanted by the law, they became super-villains.
