Donovan Zane was a member of the Friends of Humanity and a Graydon Creed loyalist. When Creed was murdered, Zane succeeded him in the leadership. He wanted to avenge his predecessor by hunting down mutants. He targeted Spider-Man in the mistaken belief the vigilante was a mutant.
