Edward Anthony Masen was born June 20th, 1901 in Chicago to Elizabeth and Edward Masen Sr . In 1918 he contracted the Spanish Influenza. His father died of the disease early. His mother died shortly after. Before she passed on, she grabbed Dr. Carlisle Cullen as he was leaving and made him promise her that he would do everything in his power to save her son, her only child. Carlisle was stricken with the fear of the mother knowing what he was, and exactly what she was asking of him. Before he could confirm his suspicion’s, she had already past.

As Carlisle was looking after Edward he could hear Elizabeth’s words haunting him, knowing the child did not have long. And feeling as alone as he was, wishing for a companion in his way of life. Looking down on Edward he realized Edward looked like the son he always wanted a proud and beautiful child. He made the decision to change Edward Masen into a Vampire. Carlisle figured that since there were not many people on that night, and because of how busy the hospital was that no-one would miss one patient, especially this patient that was now alone and about to die himself. Carlisle wheeled Edward into the Morgue and carried him to his home, and recreated the scenario that changed Carlisle into a vampire back in the 1600‘s. Many decades later this greatly pained Carlisle as it was unnecessary pain that he did not need to of inflict upon Edward. Edward Masen died in the month of September 1918 and in turn Edward Cullen was born, a newborn vampire.

Twilight: The Graphic Novel is an adaptation of the Stephanie Meyer novels. It was created by Young Kim and was published by Yen Press in 2010. The first graphic novel focuses on the first thirteen chapters of the Twilight novel. The second volume of the graphic novel was released in 2011 and finishes off telling of the whole Twilight novel.

Character Evolution

Edward Cullen felt that being a vampire made him soulless. That he was the worst type of creature and a menace to society, regardless of the control he had over his cravings. This much is shown in his first encounter with Bella, when he runs off to feed and avoids her. Over the course of Twilight: The Graphic Novel, you see Edward constantly remind Bella that he is dangerous while she continues to chip away at his defenses. Ultimately Edward learns to trust Bella and have faith and hope in life again.
