Dr. Erik Gorbo was a bio-chemist that worked for S.H.I.E.L.D., he grew obsessed with creating a formula that increased his strength. The reasoning behind this obsession was that he wanted his peers to respect him and his work while most of all he wanted an agent named Julia to grow more affectionate towards him.
When he tested the serum he learned not only did it increase his strength but also turned him into a giant monstrous ape although maintaining his intelligence and allowing him to sway the minds of lesser animals to do his bidding. Rather than sharing this discovery Erik decided to create more after he felt scorned by Juilia who declined to keep him company. That’s when he decided to turn into the beast to commit crimes then revert back to himself using an antidote to remove any suspicion that it was him.
Gorbo later perished after he took a blast from Mole Man’s laser that was meant to destroy a S.H.I.E.L.D. HQ that Julia was in, sacrificing himself.
