Fenwick was thoroughly convinced that nothing ever happens around New York. While bored and complaining about the City being “dead as a doornail”, Flubb failed to notice the fire department responding to the biggest fire in years.
A bit later Fenwick was walking aimlessly around the docks, seemingly abandoned at the time. He noticed a short guy fall in the water. He half-heartedly rescued the man by throwing a rope. The grateful little guy offered him his most valuable possession, a flashlight. Fenwick was annoyed at being offered something so useless. He gave it back and told the man to “get lost”.
As soon as Fenwick turned his back, the man did get lost. He was a humanoid alien who departed the Earth for Alpha Centauri. His “flashlight” was a device allowing him to travel “faster than the speed of light”. Naturally Fenwick noticed nothing. He was too absorbed in his own rant about failing to find anything unusual.
