On planet Fernius the plant life emerged as the dominant lifeform. They developed mental powers which allowed them to enslave the other races of Fernius. Afterward they lived a “Utopian existence in comfort and luxury”. However long inactivity of their combat skills resulted in widespread boredom. They turned their attention to outer space, seeking a new challenge. They wanted to find another inhabited planet to conquer. A single Fernusan was chosen to explore the universe, seeking such a planet.Â
Â
The Fernusan was disappointed to find one uninhabited world after another, concluding there were few inhabited planets in this universe. It eventually located Earth and determined the dominant lifeform was humanity. The planet was ideal for conquest. But first the explorer had to determine whether humans possessed similar skills to their own. It decided to challenge a random human to a duel.Â
Â
The alien chose a farmer from the Midwestern United States. It explained its origins and started demonstrating the powers of its race. The Fernusans communicated through telepathy. They had vast telekinetic powers, allowing them to lift buildings and disintegrate into dust with minimal effort. They formed protective force fields, attuned to the brain waves of their opponents. (In this case humans in general). They mentally altered the molecular structure of living organisms. Â
Â
However a weakness in its defenses cost the explorer dearly. Focusing on the farmer all this while, the alien never noticed the birds seeking to feed on plants. It was eaten by a common crow. Its force field was not attuned to the crow’s brain waves.
