Marvel/Devil’s Due History
Before joining the Army, he was a Rhodes scholar and earned a degree in English Literature at Oxford, before deciding he was bored with scholarly pursuits and enlisted in the army. He graduated with top honors from Airborne School, Ranger School, Special Forces School and Flight Warrant Officers School, and is also a qualified helicopter pilot. Out in the field, Flint quickly gained a reputation for leading dangerous rescue missions. He met Duke some time before either of them joined G.I. Joe, and a few years later, Duke recruited him for the team. Flint’s outspoken, self-confident personality often borders on arrogance, but his actions usually back up his attitude.
Before his first mission with the team, Flint’s first meeting with Lady Jaye was less than civil. Lady Jaye didn’t like Flint’s attitude, and didn’t mind letting him know it. Shortly afterward, the Joes discovered Cobra operatives at the Arbco Brothers Circus. Flint dove off of a Dragonfly helicopter onto the top of a roller-coaster where he fought Tomax and Xamot, the Crimson Guard commanders. Flint took part in a number of other missions with the team before leading a rescue mission to Cobra Island to save Ripcord.
The team thought they had succeeded, but “Ripcord” was in fact Zartan in disguise. The master of disguise was eventually captured by the Joes, but not before causing havoc in Joe headquarters. Soon after that, Flint, Beach Head and Lady Jaye foiled Russian airline hijackers who had smuggled weapons onto an airplane in San Francisco. While Zartan sat in a cell at The Pit, Flint and the rest of the Joes invaded the Cobra-controlled town of Springfield. Upon their return, Zartan’s siblings and the Dreadnoks rescued Zartan. Flint and a team of Joes tracked the Dreadnoks to the New Jersey swamplands, where the Dreadnoks’ Thunder Machine arrived, taking the Joes by surprise and allowing the mercenaries to escape.
In the aftermath of the battle of Springfield, the Joe team was put on suspension and the Pit was sealed. The team was quartered in standard barracks at Fort Wadsworth. During this down time, Cobra sent in a team to invade the Pit. In a secluded area of Fort Wadsworth near a river, Flint made his first pass at Lady Jaye. Again, his ego got in the way, and Lady Jaye wasn’t interested. The pair then saw a half dozen Cobra Eels emerge from the river. Realizing the Pit was about to be invaded, Flint charged into the midst of the Eels, taking them on to give Lady Jaye time to warn the other Joes.
As Lady Jaye ran off to warn the others, she realized that Flint wasn’t the arrogant jerk she thought he was. Flint didn’t last long up against the Eels. They left him for dead on the shore, but the final Eel who was supposed to do away with Flint didn’t expect he was still conscious, and paid for it. After knocking out the Eel, Flint was a little worried about losing perspective: “This is bad… a pro shouldn’t let the fight get personal… I should calm down and — Naaah! I’ll worry about it after I stomp a few more Cobras!” Led by Flint, the Joes were able to arm themselves, but it was too late. Cobra BATs had invaded the Pit and Hawk was forced to destroy it. Joe headquarters was lost and Cobra escaped.
Seeing that the threat of Cobra was very real, the army took the Joe team off suspension. While Flint recovered from his fight with the Eels, he and Lady Jaye became closer, and he even came to confide his fears to Lady Jaye. During Flint’s recovery, Hawk sent Snake-Eyes into Sierra Gordo disguised as Flint. Snake-Eyes was to infiltrate Cobra’s Terror-Drome, but was too well known by Cobra.
Soon, Flint returned to the field with Scarlett and a team of Joes in Sierra Gordo. They captured the Terror-Drome, but Cobra got away with Snake-Eyes. A short time later, Flint was sent on a mission into Scotland with Lady Jaye. Destro–presumed dead–had been spotted arriving in Scotland. He was returning home and had decided to break his ties with Cobra. Flint and Lady Jaye teamed with two British operatives in order to obtain the plans for Cobra’s Terror-Dromes from Destro. They watched as Destro arrived at Castle Destro only to be met by an impostor, posing as him, who promptly had Destro arrested.
The Joes decided to break Destro out of jail and Lady Jaye used her undercover skills to pose as an elderly charity worker to get access to Destro’s cell. Once inside, she got Destro to safety as Flint and the others blew a whole in the jail’s wall, freeing the weapons supplier. Together, they exposed the impostor (who turned out to be Major Bludd), and though Destro could have easily disposed of the Joes with his private army, but he decided to honor his deal with the Joes. From that time on, Destro was less apt to see the Joes as his enemies.
Some time later, Flint and Lady Jaye went with Scarlett and Snake-Eyes on vacation to Grenada. While there, Lady Jaye and Flint were horrified when Scarlett and Snake-Eyes were apparently killed by a landmine. In reality, they had faked their deaths so that they could undertake an unauthorized rescue of three Joes (Stalker, Snow Job, and Quick Kick) being held in a Soviet gulag in Borovia. During the months that followed, Flint led a team of Joes into Southeast Asia to ambush a Soviet armored column and capture a Russian scientist carrying top secret computer chips. In reality, the mission was meant to fail. The CIA operative in charge of the mission expected the Joes to never succeed. He instead wanted the chips to remain in Russian hands, since they would sabotage Soviet computer systems.
Despite the CIA agent’s betrayal, Flint’s team made it out alive and inadvertently ruined the agent’s mission anyway. When Snake-Eyes and Scarlett finally returned from their unauthorized rescue mission, Flint could not keep his anger at them in check. He blurted out that they could have included him and Lady Jaye on the mission and not make fools of them Lady Jaye was so upset by Flint’s outburst that she punched him, knocking him to the ground. She angrily told him that Snake-Eyes and Scarlett did what they did to protect their friends. The argument didn’t last long, however, and Lady Jaye and Flint admitted their feelings for each other. Months later, Flint and Lady Jaye were interrupted during a tender moment by a Cobra infiltrator in the Pit. They sounded the alarm and chased the intruder, but he escaped. That infiltrator’s theft of a secret military “black box” sparked the Joes’ involvement in the Cobra Island civil war. Lady Jaye, Flint and Mainframe served as the Joes’ operations team on board the U.S.S. Flagg aircraft carrier.
They were disappointed that they never made it into the battle. Flint was later teamed up with Lady Jaye, Scarlett and Snake-Eyes on an undercover mission into Darklonia, the home of Destro’s cousin, the weapons-maker Darklon. They posed as obnoxious American tourists to the eastern European nation in order to expose a traitor in the Wolkekuckuckland military, which was being advised by the Joes. Over the next few months, Flint took part in a battle with Dreadnoks on a Long Island expressway, stopped two brainwashed Joes from getting loose in the Pit III and journeyed into the nation of Sierra Gordo, where a group of Joes teamed with the new Oktober Guard (months after four of their original number were killed in that same region). Lady Jaye had to deal with Flint’s jealousy as she flirted with the Guard’s new member Lt. Gorky. The team eventually made it out of Sierra Gordo alive, but just barely. Flint also took part in the Battle of Benzheen, a major operation in the middle east in which many Joes lost their lives. Just after that, Flint was one of the Joes who assisted Destro when Cobra Commander decided to exact his revenge on Destro once and for all.
Once again, the Joes and Destro became reluctant allies. For a short time after that, Flint led the team known as the Eco-Warriors. With Ozone and Clean-Sweep, he confronts Cesspool, a Cobra agent who is causing a pollution disaster from an abandoned oil platform. One of Flint’s last missions for the Joe team took him back into eastern Europe with Flint, Hawk, Stalker and Snake-Eyes. The Joes were trying to stop Cobra’s invasion of Wolkekuckuckland, advising the military once again. They succeeded in rescuing Snake-Eyes from Cobra’s castle in Trans-Carpathia.
During his time on the Joe team, Flint was a vital part of the team as both a soldier and a leader. Despite his occasionally arrogant behavior and his fiery temper, Flint is well-respected and well-liked by his teammates, who know that there is a courageous man under all his bluster. Flint remained on the Joe team until it was disbanded in 1994.
A few years after the Joe team was shut down, Flint and Lady Jaye were married and made a home in Fort Meade, Maryland, not far from the Pentagon. At that time, Flint began working on a book about his experiences on the Joe team. In 2001, the G.I. Joe Team was reinstated by the government in response to Cobra’s return to the United States. Duke brought many of the older Joes to help train and lead a batch of new recruits, and Flint became the team’s executive officer. Lady Jaye became one of the team’s field commanders. Joes have noted that his marriage and new administrative duties have helped Flint tone down his occasional arrogant behavior.
After helping to fight Cobra’s nano-mite threat and taking part in other operations, Flint was kidnapped by Russian mobsters while on his way to his own book signing. Both he and the Baroness were being held in the Czech Republic by groups of gangsters hoping to stop Cobra from stealing away their members. The two escaped even as the Joes and Destro joined forces to rescue them, and worked together closely. Once they were rescued, the Baroness–just causing trouble for the fun of it–made sure everyone saw her thank him with a kiss. Lady Jaye was not amused and again gave Flint a punch in the mouth before he could explain. Flint later joined the Joes’ invasion of Cobra Island to battle the forces of a revived Serpentor.
Flint found himself in conflict with Duke after his old teammate launched a secret operation in Sierra Gordo. The small nation’s new president contacted Duke after Destro offered his services to the country to help them fight a group of invaders who were secretly Destro’s Iron Grenadiers. A team of Joes were sent in to assist Sierra Gordo’s army in the battle, but Duke had not told them that he was setting up Destro to be captured. In fact, he hadn’t told Hawk, Flint or any other Joe what he was planning. Duke personally captured Destro, and two Joes were injured in the fighting.
After the operation, Duke faced angry teammates, including Hawk and Flint, who were even considering throwing him off the team for unnecessarily endangering troops. Their argument nearly came to blows before Hawk could separate them. Before the two old friends patched up their differences, the Joe team baited Cobra Commander into a trap by making him believe Destro was on board a train guarded by the Joes. Destro helped set the trap in exchange for his freedom. In the battle that followed, Hawk was shot and paralyzed by Cobra Commander, who was in turn captured by the Joes.
In Hawk’s absence, Duke took control of the team, while Flint continued his role as executive officer. The Joe commanders soon found themselves fighting the corrupt cabal of generals known as the Jugglers. During this time, Flint and Lady Jaye’s relationship became strained as they wondered if they could ever live a normal, peaceful life again.
With Destro once again free and in command of Cobra, the Jugglers began cracking down on the Joes, intent on reigning in the team or disbanding it all together. Meanwhile, Hawk was seemingly despondent and unwilling to retake command. Duke and Flint did their best to keep the team together with the help of General Joe Colton, though the Jugglers cut down their roster to about a dozen Joes and arrested a number of them. They also placed the mysterious General Philip Rey in command of the team. Rey, Flint and the remaining Joes fought Cobra Commander’s plans to unleash the deadly super-weapon known as the Tempest. At the same time, the Joes faced a new threat in the group called the Red Shadows, who had begun targeting and murdering Joe and Cobra agents.
They sparked violence and instability around the globe, hoping to take control of the world. The battle with this new organization became shockingly personal when Flint was attacked by Dela Eden, an agent of the Red Shadows, and would have been killed if not for the intervention of Lady Jaye. While attempting to save her husband, Lady Jaye was killed as Flint looked on in horror. Devastated and angry, Flint threw himself into the mission at hand while hoping to exact vengeance on the Red Shadows. He nearly got himself killed by infiltrating the Shadows’ base on his own before the remaining Joes arrived. Flint nearly shot and killed an unarmed Eden, but was not disturbed enough to turn himself into a murderer. In the end, Duke, Rey and Flint’s small team of Joes defeated the schemes of the Red Shadows and Cobra. Shortly after these threats were neutralized, the G.I. Joe team was again disbanded by the military.
The defeat of the Red Shadows did little to help Flint deal with his grief over Lady Jaye’s death. One year later, the Joe team was reformed with a smaller roster of active members, including Flint. Still bitter and angry after Lady Jaye’s death, Flint became more aggressive and reckless as the Joes tried to stop Vance Wingfield (an old foe from the early years of the Joe team) from crashing orbiting satellites into populated areas. The team’s new commander, Joe Colton, expressed his doubts about Flint being a part of the team to Stalker, who convinced the General to keep his old teammate on duty.
As Wingfield’s threat ended, Snake-Eyes was apparently killed in action. Flint was little comfort to Scarlett in her grief, telling her that the pain only gets worse. After Snake-Eyes was miraculously revived by the Red Ninjas and freed from their control, Flint officially resigned from the G.I. Joe team with little explanation. The team was unaware Flint went on a personal mission to track down the Red Shadows’ leader, Wilder Vaughn, and bring him to justice. When he finally found Vaughn in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, he witnessed a meeting between Vaughn and the Baroness, who had recently escaped the Joe team’s custody with the stealth suit worn previously by Destro’s agent, Wraith. When the meeting ended, though he found the decision difficult to make, Flint followed the Baroness and contacted Joe headquarters, indicating that he had found her.
Flint followed her to Cobra Commander’s hidden base in Honduras, where she hoped to find her kidnapped baby, a son she had with Destro during their time together. As the Baroness met with the Commander and Destro, Flint, Spirit and Snake-Eyes raided the base but were captured. As the Joes watched, Destro turned his company, MARS, over to Cobra Commander in exchange for baby Eugen. Flint and the Joes tried to capture the Commander, but were forced to reconsider after the Commander revealed he had learned the names and locations of their family members when he had infiltrated the White House a short time before–which included Lady Jaye’s parents in Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts.
To help deal with Cobra Commander’s growing threat, the Joe team expanded its roster of active members and welcomed Flint back to the team. By this time, while Flint had not completely moved past the death of Lady Jaye, he had moved beyond the anger and seemed more like his old self. The Joes began tracking down as many former and current Cobra operatives as they could find.
In Dagestan, Flint helped prevent the assassination of a local official by Cobra’s South American operative Cobra Mortal, and faced a number of Cobra operatives. G.I. Joe soon learned that the new spike in Cobra activity was part of Cobra Commander’s plan to literally start World War III, leading General Colton to activate all reserve members of the team, new and old. The conflict spread across the globe as Flint and the core members of the team took the lead in fighting Cobra and the Iron Grenadiers. Eventually, the Joes crushed Cobra and finally arrested Cobra Commander, bringing an end to the war. Most reserve Joes have returned to their previous assignments while Flint continues on as an active member of G.I. Joe.
Since 2010, all Devil’s Due G.I. Joe stories are not considered canon.

Danger Girl/G.I. Joe
After the acquisition of the Danger Girl characters by IDW it was decided to first launch the characters under the IDW banner with a crossover with one of the major properties at IDW, G.I. Joe (as they are owned by the same company it seems possible that these characters exist in the same continuity, though this is never confirmed.) The series starts off with a dog chase involving Scarlett and Flint and they are soon shot down. It is revealed that they were providing escort for a shipment of rediscovered missiles with great destructive power.
They are soon shot down though and the missiles are taken by Cobra, who also take the two prisoners. Once in Cobra custody they come across Abbey Chase who is acting undercover, though the two members of G.I. Joe do not know this. Elsewhere the American president arrives to the USS Flagg and informs the Joe team to stand down and to not seek to free their teammates. General Flag orders them to stand down. The remaining female members (Cover Girl, Lady Jaye and Jinx) come up with a plan where they will contact the Danger Girl team (Cover Girl had previously met Johnny Barracuda.)
The team shows up and exposes the U.S. president as Zarana in disguise. Soon enough it is revealed that the Danger Girl team already has an operative in place and she informs them of the plan. Firefly is to head to Moscow and detonate one of the missiles while Major Bludd is to go to Beijing to detonate another. Three teams head out, one to each of the two cities and the third to the Cobra base. By now Abbey is under suspicion of Baroness, Destro and Cobra Commander and is captured by Zartan when she attempts to free Scarlett and Flint. While they are trying to escape a team of Low Light, Snake Eyes and Stalker arrive to free them. Meanwhile in Beijing a team of Jinx, Johnny Barracuda and Sonya Savage stop Major Bludd while a team of Sydney Savage, Cover Girl and Roadblock stop Firefly.
It is soon revealed that there is another missile which is headed for the homing beacon which Zarana has placed on the USS Flagg. Silicon Valerie, Duke and Lady Jaye quickly deal with it. Meanwhile at the Cobra base Storm Shadow has arrived to stop the Joes and he engages Snake-Eyes in combat. Eventually this group is also able to escape, while blowing up the base and they are all reunited on the USS Flagg.
Other Media
Sunbow/DIC animated series
Flint was a core character of the original Sunbow animated series that aired from 1983-86. He first appeared in the 1984 “Revenge of Cobra” miniseries (a year before his action figure was released, with a different color palette). He was voiced by Bill Ratner in all the seasons of the show and in the 1987 film, and was frequently featured with Lady Jaye in almost every episode. Five years later, when DIC continued the show, Flint was featured as the leader of the Joes’ new Eco-Warriors team, where he was voiced by Michael Donovan.
He also made a cameo (again voiced by Ratner) in an episode of the third season of The Transformers (“The Killing Jar”), where it is implied (and eventually confirmed) that he is the father of the Autobots’ human ally Marissa Faireborn.
Direct-To-Video Films
Flint appeared in both the 2003 “Spy Troops” and the 2004 “Valor vs Venom” CG-animated films voiced by Brian Dobson, with a limited role in each.
G.I. Joe: Resolute (2009)
He appears in the animated film voiced by Charlie Adler. During the HAARP crisis, he heads Joe operations on the USS Flagg, and later participates in the raid on Cobra’s Springfield base.
G.I. Joe: Renegades (2011)
Flint is a recurring character in the series, where he is voiced by Johnny Messner. Here, he’s a commissioned officer for Army Intelligence and partnered with Lady Jaye to track down and apprehend the fugitive Joes. His role is somewhat similar to Colonels Fullbright and Decker in The A-Team.
G.I. Joe: Retaliation (2012)
D.J. Cotrona played Flint in the sequel to 2009’s G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.
Toy History
Flint’s first action figure was released in 1985, and was one of the first Joe figures to receive the new “neck ball” style of head articulation, which now allowed figures to look up and down in addition to left and right. The figure would later be repainted in 1988 as part of the Tiger Force sub-team. His third figure would be released in 1991 as part of the Eco-Warriors team, where his uniform had plastic that changed color when hit by water. It was also the first Flint to not have a beret. Flint got his first 12-inch figure in 1993 as part of the G.I. Joe Hall of Fame series.
His fourth 3-3/4″ figure was released in 1994 as part of the Battle Corps series, where he was given the specialty of Desert Paratrooper. The figure had a variation where the straps on his thighs were either painted black or unpainted. He was to be part of the 1995 Ninja Commandos subset, but the toyline was cancelled a year before, leaving the mold unused, until it became the movie edition figure of Raiden for Hasbro’s Mortal Kombat line from that year. It wouldn’t be until 2001 when Flint got his next figure, a repaint of his Eco-Warriors figure as the driver of the Desert Striker vehicle for the Real American Hero Collection.
The next year, he was given not one, but two figures: the first was a re-release of the Rock N’ Roll figure (itself a repaint of the Battle Corps Flint) included with a re-release of the 2001 version of the G.I. Joe Headquarters for the 2002 “G.I. Joe vs Cobra” line. In that same line, he was given a figure with an entirely new sculpt and packaged in a two-pack with a new version of Baroness.
The figure was repainted for the 2003 Spy Troops series, where he was released in a two-pack with the Cobra sniper Blackout. That same year also saw the release of his second 12-inch figure for that same line. His next figure would appear in 2004 as part of Hasbro’s LEGO lookalike series “Built-To-Rule”, where he was given a new sculpt that incorporated pegs to attach BTR pieces to his arms and lower legs. The second was a repaint of his original 1985 figure (minus the lower arms) as part of the Toys R Us exclusive Night Force 6-pack; it would also be re-released (along with the Beachhead figure from that pack) with another Toys R Us exclusive in 2005, the Night Force Moray Hydrofoil.
That same year, the Night Force figure (with a new head sculpt) would be released in one of the Comic Pack entries for Hasbro’s Direct-To-Consumer line of G.I. Joe, along with General Hawk, Tunnel Rat, and a reprint of the Marvel run’s issue 76. His next figure would be released in 2007 as part of the first wave of single-carded 25th Anniversary figures, where he was given a new sculpt. He used the body mold of Duke, but was given a new head sculpt and shotgun. It was a controversial figure with fans, as they were disappointed by the lack of gloves and poor arm and waist articulation. Early releases of the figure had no backpack hole, which was corrected when it was part of a wave of re-releases of earlier figures in the line. Most of the figure was repainted in his Tiger Force colors in 2008, and was given a newer head sculpt and newer, more poseable arms with gloves. That same year also saw a figure of him in his Cobra Trooper disguise (based on an episode in the 1984 “Revenge of Cobra” cartoon miniseries), with a swappable Cobra Trooper head. It was also the year his third 12-inch figure (more in line with his 1985 look) was released when Hasbro began doing 12-inch figures again.
His next 3-3/4″ figure came in 2009 as part of the second G.I. Joe 5-pack, where he was given a new head sculpt and shotgun, a backpack based on his original, and adjusted waist articulation. It was later that year slightly repainted (and given the first figure’s head) as part of the 25th Anniversary’s “Hall Of Heroes” assortment of 10 figures voted by fans. Also that year, he was part of the second series of “G.I. Joe Combat Heroes” mini-figures (similar to the Star Wars “Galactic Heroes” and Marvel “Super Hero Squad” figures), where he was released in a two-pack with Baroness.
2010 would see him get two exclusive figures for the G.I. Joe Collector’s Convention’s exclusive figure set for that year (“Vacation in the Shadows”), both of which re-used his original 1985 figure’s head atop the 1993 Battle Corps Duke’s body–one came in the set itself, while the other was the year’s small paratroop figure. That same year also saw the release of a figure based on his appearance in the previous year’s G.I. Joe: Resolute in a 7-pack exclusive to Big Bad Toy Store. His most recent figure was released in 2011, when Sideshow Collectibles made him the 10th of their 12-inch series of highly-detailed figures.
