Gates

Current Events

After traveling back in time with a number of his teammates from the Legion of Superheroes, the remainder of the team (referred to as Legion Lost out of continuity) is on the trail of Alastor who threatens to release a virus which can destroy all of mankind.  After nearly stopping him in Minnesota the team travels to New York City in their continued attempt to track him.

Origin

Ti’julk Mr’asz was born on Earth-247 on the planet Vyrga, a jungle world of sentient insects. He was one of the planet’s few free-thinkers among an otherwise conformist, hive-mind. He was also one of the few members of his race who manifested their latent power of teleportation. Ti’julk was given the names Gates and was “drafted” into the Legion of Super-Heroes.

Gates (Earth-247)

Gates was against the idea and referred to the team as a “teenage death squad”. After initially dodging the draft, he was forced to go to Earth where he was sworn in alongside Star Boy. He was one of the Legion’s biggest naysayers, an attitude that softened after several missions. He was one of the Legionnaires stranded in the 20th century by the Emerald Eye. While there, Gates was fazed by the homeless people and worked with Ultra Boy to provide for them. Eventually, Gates and the others returned to the 30th century. Gates was among a team sent to a space anomaly that left Brainiac 5 changed, the two becoming friends.

Post Flashpoint, Gates is one of Legionnaires who is trapped in the 21st century. He was believed dead following an explosion in the time bubble, but later resurfaced. Due to exposure to a evolutionary disease released by Alastor, Gates’ physical structure on his left side was altered.

Gates battles Ra’s al Ghul

Ra's al Ghul
Ra’s al Ghul

Gates survived the Blight invasion of Earth. He went with the Legion to stop a tear in the space-time continuum where several Legionnaires were ultimately lost. Gates, passed out from the strain of teleporting survivors, was lost in space and kidnapped by Leland McCauley‘s forces. His teammates erroneously believed he had been lost in the rift with the others. For the next year, Gates was experimented on by Ra’s al Ghul, who was posing as McCauley. Gates was instrumental in activating the repressed teleporter genome among other test subjects of his people. With little strength left, a power outage allowed Gates to escape and reunite with a reformed Legion of Super-Heroes. Gates joined back up, eager to help fix the government that Ra’s al Ghul had corrupted. He once accidentally teleported the villain’s arm off in battle, which Ra’s later tried to extract revenge for. Ultimately, Earth-247 was destroyed in Infinite Crisis, but Gates and his fellow Legionnaires survived as they were lost in the timestream at the time.

Gates: joins New Earth

The Earth-247 Legionnaires were eventually rescued and worked with two other Legion incarnations on New Earth to defeat Superboy-Prime. Upon Prime’s defeat, Gates’ team of Legionnaires elected to re-enter the timestream and push into the multiverse. Gates opted to remain on New Earth, which had recently gone through a period of xenophobia and figured an invertebrate’s point of view on that team would be crucial. He also wished to stay to keep XS company, who has since taken a leave of absence. Gates served with the Legion of New Earth until a mission stranded he and a team of Legionnaires in the 21st century.

Powers and Abilities

Teleport

Teleportation
Teleportation

Gates has the latent, unrealized ability of his people to open teleportational discs which he can link together to make spatial doorways. The ability is usually dormant for his species – Gates was one of the few if not the only Vrygan naturally born with the power. Gates is able to open a portal large enough to fit half a dozen individuals and is able to maintain the connection between two discs as long as his concentration holds. The edges of his teleportation discs are considered sharp. Closing a disc prematurely could result in cutting apart whatever object was in the portal at the time. Though it isn’t a limitation on his power, Gates prefers to see where he is teleporting so as to not open a disc inside another being or object and destroy it.

Equipment

Legion Flight Ring
Legion Flight Ring

As a member of the Legion of Super-Heroes, Gates possesses a Legion Flight Ring. The ring gives its wearer the ability to fly, the speed and range of which is determined by the wearer’s willpower. It also acts as a long-range communicator (enabling constant vocal contact with other Legionnaires, even across vast distances of space), a signal device, and a navigational compass, all powered by a micro-computer built inside the ring. The utility belt houses rations and a transuit that allows Gates to travel in space.
