Professor Gerald wanted to help out humanity by creating the ultimate life-form in hopes that the research would allow him to cure any disease and even grant immortality. He first created the Bio-Lizard but later created Shadow the Hedgehog, having discovered that his species’ biology was the universal constant. However, the military would invade the space station ARK, where he was working on the ultimate life-form, shut it down, killed his granddaughter Maria Robotnik, and captured him and took him to Prison Island. After all this, Gerald went insane and wanted revenge on the world so he had the eclipse cannon built on the ARK with the power to destroy the planet, and also secretly programmed Shadow to carry out his revenge in case he should fail, and also left a microchip containing his whole plan for anyone who wished to follow in his footsteps.
