In a “Born on a Battlefield” story-arc (Conan’s origin story) he was identified as a warleader of unified Cimmerian clans standing against invading Aquilonians. In Kurt Busiek version he was from Pictkiller clan from western Cimmeria.
When Conan comes back to Cimmeria – Gwydd is a chief of his clan.
