Hal Jordan is currently returning to earth after the events of Godhead and the war against the New Gods of New Genesis that was fought over the white lantern ring and the power wielded by Kyle Rayner, the Life Equation. Kyle gained power over the source code when he crossed over to the other side of the source wall. When he returned, the New Gods sensed his power and sought to take it for their own in hopes of finally defeating Darkseid and Apokolips for good. During this battle, Hal found himself making alliances with Red Lantern Guy Gardner, Sinestro, and even Black Hand who all helped him in ending the battle when they used boom tube technology to take the fight to the New God’s planet of New Genesis. These events led to Hal taking some time off on Earth. After an encounter with his earth friends at a local bar on earth he had to accept than Carol Ferris has moved on in a new relationship with Kyle Rayner and he must rebuild his life. Ha also has accepted to train Jessica Cruz in the use of the Earth-3 power ring in the Justice League book being written by Geoff Johns. In the Green Lantern book that ended before the start of Convergence in April, 2015 he made a plan to make himself the scapegoat of the Green Lantern fiasco. He sought to gather all the hatred and finger pointing to himself rather than on the Green Lantern Corps. He did this by telling Kilowog that he would act like he betrayed the Corps and take the blame for all the destruction caused during the war with the Durlans and the Khund. His last act was to steal Krona’s gauntlet and have a fight with Kilowog that they had to make look good and believable.

Abin Sur, The Previous Sector 2814 Lantern

Hal Jordan was born into a military family. His father, Martin Jordan, flew in the war and, during Hal’s childhood, was occupied as a test pilot for Ferris Aircraft. Hal had an especially close bond with his father, both of them sharing a love of flying (Hal often skipping school to watch his father fly). Martin was killed during a test-flight gone awry, with both Hal and Carol Ferris watching. As a result, Hal’s mother forbade him from frequenting air fields or having anything whatsoever to do with the world of aviation which had taken her husband. In accordance with this ultimatum, Hal promised not to join the Air Force. At the age of 18, however, Hal joined the Air Force anyway, and was considered one of the best young pilots. His first combat deployment was in the Korean War. Years later when Hal’s mother was dying, Hal planned on visiting her. However, his brother Jack said his mom had no interest in seeing her son. Knowing that the reason his mother refused to see him was due to his being in the Air Force, he enacted a plan to get discharged as quickly as possible- punching his commanding officer. He was summarily dishonorably discharged and went immediately see his mother, but she passed away just before he arrived at the hospital.

Much later, while testing a flight simulator, an energy field surrounded him and took him to Abin Sur, a member of the Green Lantern Corps, an intergalactic peace keeping force, who patrolled Space Sector 2814. On the verge of death, Abin Sur, with his power ring, sought out the most worthy successor on Earth. The ring actually found two Earthlings, Hal Jordan and Guy Gardner. Hal happened to be closer to the crash site so he was chosen. Despite some character flaws, Hal Jordan was given the power ring and its power battery. He journeyed to the planet Oa, home world of the Green Lantern Corps, and trained with Sinestro, a Corps member that would later become one of Hal’s deadliest enemies. He became the Green Lantern of Sector 2814 (the location of Earth) and formed many relationships among the superhero community. Hal is considered the greatest Green Lantern of them all.

With the insistence of the then DC editor, Julius Schwartz to bring in a new science fiction age of comics and to revamp the superhero genre, Hal Jordan was the Silver Age Green Lantern created by John Broome and Gil Kane. He first appeared in Showcase #22.

His first appearance signaled the reboot of characters away from the magic and supernatural based stories of the Golden Age and replaced them with science fiction based stories. Along with the newly re-imagined Atom, Flash and Hawkman, this was a landmark moment which many consider to be the beginning of the Silver Age at DC Comics.

Gone was the magic based Green Lantern of Alan Scott, and now came Hal Jordan, wielder of a ring of alien origins, part of an intergalactic police force protecting the universe.

Character Evolution

After meeting and befriending Green Arrow, Hal Jordan became more socially conscious, seeking to help ordinary people. After this, Hal Jordan was exiled into deep space.

The most important personal relationship which Hal has is that with Carol Ferris. As the inheritor of the family business at Ferris Air, she is his boss, and over time the childhood friends grew to love each other. As she was possessed by the Star Sapphire, it also fell to him to rescue her from its grips. As she now has control over the Star Sapphire she now acts as a hero occasionally alongside him, and while the two seek to be in a relationship, their past history together of betrayal often comes back to haunt them.

During Emerald Dawn, Hal Jordan’s origin story was retold. It explains how Hal Jordan obtained the ring after Abin Sur‘s death. Emerald Dawn II shows Hal going to jail for driving under the influence and later Hal and Sinestro start their 90 day lesson.

Hal would go on to be possessed by Parallax, and turn evil. He would later do some good, such as healing John Stewart, bringing Green Arrow back to life and sacrificing himself to stop the Sun-Eater, and reignite the sun. After Hal dies stopping the sun-eater, he becomes the Spectre. Hal would later regain his life, and return as the Green Lantern.

Hal looks at the place that was once his hometown Coast City

Jordan’s hometown, Coast City, was destroyed by the Cyborg Superman and the alien warlord Mongul in order to turn it into something called Engine City, a replacement for Warworld. While the two were beaten, Hal could not accept the fact that his city so Hal used his ring to create the constructs in the form of people of Coast City. One of the constructs he created took the form of his dead father.

Hal told his “father” how he was always looking up to him and wanted to be just like him. He only wanted to see his father being proud of him instead of just saying how his brothers Jack and Jim are great. His “father” told him how Hal’s brothers have done something with their lives while Hal’s head was in clouds. Even when Hal says he became a hero, his father mocked him on how he wasn’t able to save Coast City and as Hal begs his father to come back, he sees his father dying on testing flight for Ferris Aircraft.

Next moment, he sees his mother in the form of construct telling him how he will always he a failure in his father’s eyes. He asked his mother how she accepted the fact that her husband’s plane crashed. She tells him how she loved Hal’s father and she thought and even wanted to die when her husband died but eventually she just accepted it. Over time people go on and they are left with good memories. She remembers all the good times she spend with her husband and she tells her son not let go of the pain he feels now and just keep all the good memories he had to satisfy him or the pain will consume him. As the construct of his mother disappears, Hal focuses his willpower again and this time uses his ring to recreate the Coast City in a form of an energy construct while at the same time creating constructs of all people from the Coast City he knew that are now dead.

Hal meets his first love Jennifer and takes a walk over “Coast City”, telling Jen how she was Hal’s first love and how she helped him live his life again. Even after 3 years have passed since Hal’s father died, he still could’t get over it but Jen helped him stop hurting himself and even convinced him to become a pilot like his father. He tells Jen how the time he spent with her was the best year of his life and that he was a fool to turn his back on her. Hal comes home and meets his father again, telling him how Hal recreating Coast City and everyone in it is a huge achievement meaning that Hal finally did something to make his father proud but before he can say that to Hal, his father, his home and all of Coast City Hal recreated disappears because his ring lost power. The guardians appeared and Hal asked them for more power but the Guardians of the Corps refused to give Hal more power. Consumed with fear, Hal was left vulnerable to Parallax, the spirit embodiment of fear. Accuse Hal for using his ring for personal needs, The Guardians demand it back. Hal drains energy from Guardian’s projection and travels to Oa.

Hal, under the influence of Parallax, lost his senses and murdered other Corps members, including: Tomar-Tu, Boodikka, KE’Hann, Laira, Graf Toren, Kreon and Jack T. Chance, claiming Guardians made him a slave and stole the power rings of Lanterns he defeated.

He sent them off in space and they became The Lost Lanterns. Hal even went on to reluctantly kill Kilowog.

He reached Oa where he battled Sinestro (who was let free by the guardians). Hal removed his other rings in order to face Sinestro in a fair fight. The battle ended with Hal’s victory by snapping Sinestro’s neck and led to the death of Sinestro (for a time), claiming it is something Hal should have done a long time ago. Hal claims he crossed the line and he can’t go back and when the Guardians claim he will be punished, Hal accused them for not being there to give him the power he wanted to use only to get his normal life back. He didn’t want anything else. Hal starts crying, claiming there is no turning back and nobody can’t stop him, not even he can’t. He abandoned his ring and started to absorb the emerald energies of the central power battery and destroying the battery along with the entire Green Lantern Corps. He killed all the Guardians except for Ganthet who had absorbed their power and retrieved Hal’s ring in order to went on to Earth to find the person who will become the new and the last Green Lantern. He encountered the man called Kyle Rayner, gave him Hal’s ring and disappeared. Hal finally comes out of the scenes, absorbing all energy from power battery and became the villain known as Parallax.

Parallax during Zero Hour

Parallax is responsible the crisis known as Zero Hour. He started it by defeating the Time Trapper coming to the end of time with the intention to recreate the Universe and rewrite history the way he thought it should be. Parallax killed various time travelers, sparing only those he does not consider to be a threat to him and makes sure to kill the Time Trapper once he finds out he survived the encounter with him. With the help of Waverider, the Earth’s heroes encountered Parallax who easily defeated Kyle and Superman and finally ended all of creation and was about to start a new one.

When Parallax started to recreate the Universe, he claimed how all he wanted to do is bring Coast City and it’s people back but eventually he came to a conclusion that the loss of Coast City is not the only problem he needs to take care of but all the Universe is full of agony and flaws and he needs to fix it. He even claims he can give all heroes everything they wanted. Waverider teleports Earth’s heroes to encounter Parallax who faces all of his former allies, even Green Arrow. Even The Spectre joined the fight. Waverider used the power of Earth’s heroes to drain Parallax of his power and they successfully recreated the Universe with a few differences compared to the way it was before Parallax destroyed it.

Parallax vs Kyle Rayner

For further details: Resurrection of Hal Jordan

Right after Parallax was stopped during the final events of the Zero Hour, him and Kyle were teleported back to Oa and started a fight. With most of his power gone, Parallax wants to take his ring back from Kyle in order to use it to drain power from Oa and try to fix things again. Kyle refuses and as he overpowers Parallax, Hal sees the skull of his friend Kilowog he killed during Emerald Twilight. Hal tells Kyle how he only wanted to fix things. To be the hero but he did terrible things and he became “one of the bad guys:. Kyle understands Hal’s words and tells him how he became the Green Lantern and how he lost Alex, a woman he cared about. Realizing the great responsibility of being a hero, Kyle gives Hal the ring. Hall tries to use it’s power to absorb the energy from Oa and reach higher levels of power like before. However, because he is weakened, Kyle was able to take the ring back. Hal gives Kyle an opportunity to give him what he lost, his girlfriend Alex. Kyle refuses as it doesn’t seem right in his eyes and he used ring’s power to overwhelm Oa by charging it with energy. Oa gets destroyed, removing Hal’s opportunity to become more powerful. Kyle survived while Hal is nowhere to be seen.

It turned out Hal actually survived Oa’s destruction and came back to Earth in his human form. He encountered Kyle Rayner once again in his own house and was able to track him by being connected with his ring Kyle now wears. Hal had no intention to fight Kyle and only asked for his ring. Hal thinks he should become the Green Lantern again in order to put his life back together and being the Green Lantern was a huge part of his life. Everything he did since the destruction of Coast City was a mistake and it is something he regrets doing. He only tried to fix things and nobody could understand him. Ganthet on the refuses to allow Kyle to hand over the ring who was in Kyle’s home at the time to tell him how and why he gave him the ring and wants it back because he considers Kyle unworthy of it. Hal mocks Ganthet and the Guardians, stating the only thing they do is manipulating others for their own personal needs and always following their rules without doing things that are necessary and demands the ring back.

Kyle refuses to hand it over because Hal already had a chance of redemption and he failed back on Oa. Hal takes the form of Parallax once again and attacks Kyle (although he is not willing to fight him).As the two fight, Ganthet asks various superheroes for help, including Martian Manhunter, Aquaman, Hawkman, The Flash (Wally West) and his best friend Oliver Queen Green Arrow. Unfortunately, not even their combined power can stop Parallax and words from his best friend Oliver and Wally won’t get though him. Parallax beats Kyle and takes his ring. Superman arrives on the scene, telling Hal how he can’t bring Coast City back but he won’t accept it and again, easily beats Superman.

Ganthet tells Hal how he wanted to bring Coast City back and he killed the Green lantern Corp and the Guardians, he wanted to become the Green Lantern again and he defeated all of his former friends. Hal feels guilt but he still requires power. Kyle Rayner now powerless still attacks Hal and he asks him why is he still fighting when he stands to chance without his ring. Kyle says Hal is not a hero and even tho Kyle is powerless, he is the only one left standing and because Hal has to be stopped, he will try to stop him. Even if he stands no chance, because that is what a hero would do. Hal realizes he can’t be the Green Lantern anymore and he gives Kyle back his ring, claiming how he is the Green Lantern now.

Ganthet gives Parallax his powers and he flees up into space. Somewhere in the Universe, Hal mourns his destroyed city and people who died in it and remembers all the good things he had done as the Green Lantern, back before the Coast City was destroyed.

Death of Hal Jordan

For further details: The Final Night

At the edge of the Universe in front of the Source Wall, Parallax encounters Hank Henshaw, Cyborg Superman, a man who destroyed Coast City and he is finally ready to make him pay for what he did. Parallax creates an army of seven million people Henshaw killed when he destroyed the Coast City and finally kills him. Hal thinks about what he truly accomplished. What kind of hero he is when he killed his own enemy? Why he doesn’t feel anything but emptiness? What is his purpose now? As he thinks about it, he is met with the arrival Kyle Rayner who asks for Hal’s help to stop the Sun-Eater, a being that consumes Suns and is about to consume Earth’s Star. Hal tells Kyle he will think about it while asking himself will he be able to actually stop it.

Hal came back to Earth to meet all of his friends. He first visited Guy Gardner, telling him how he wanted to fix the Universe but nobody understood him and Hal admits that he was wrong. He was talking about everyone seeing Guy as an idiot no better than the villains they were facing. Guy says he doesn’t care as he knows he is doing the right thing. Hal tells him how he needs Guy watching his back and teleporting away thanking him for everything.

Next person he meets is John Stewart in the hospital who was paralyzed. John asks him how he could kill the Guardians and the Green Lanterns. Hal tells him how he wished he had time to explain but he doesn’t so he just came to visit his old friend and he heals him from his wounds, giving him the ability to walk again.

He visits Oliver’s grave and he visits his old friend Tom Kalmaku. Tom says he doesn’t believe in stuff they say about Hal, claiming how he is gonna save the world like he always does and how how writes a book, on how great hero Hal was. Hal says thank you and leaves before Tom could show him the book.

Finally he visits Carol Ferris, a woman he loves. Carol tells him how they could never be together because of Hal’s life as the Green Lantern. They never had the future and Hal knows that despite the fact that he can’t accept it. Still, Carol doesn’t care about things Hal has done. Even if Hal doesn’t know will he be able to save Earth, Carol knows he can because she knows him and she knows he is the hero. Carol tells Hal she loves him and Hal kisses her right before he leaves.

Hal dies as a hero.Hal dies as a hero.
Hal dies as a hero.

As Hal looks at the place that was once Coast City, he releases Ganthet who can’t ignore the fact that Hal destroyed the Green Lantern Corps despite the fact that he is asking for redemption. Hal doesn’t see it that way and in his mind, Guardians are the ones who betrayed him. They didn’t want to give him one thing he asked for even tho he gave his life to serve them. Ganthet creates a new ring and gives it to Hal. Hal remembers when he asked for his ring back from Kyle, thinking he could redeem himself if he becomes the Green Lantern again but he knows that is not enough. He has done a lot of things he isn’t proud of. Hal refuses to take the ring and as Ganthet leaves, Hal teleports Kyle back, claiming he wants to help.

While Batman seems very skeptical about this, Superman is glad to have Hal back on their side. Hal claims he is not coming back, he only wants to save Earth. Hal stops Ferro Lad from sacrificing himself to save the Sun using a device build by Lex Luthor and Brainiac 5. As he teleports him back to Earth, Hal stops the Sun-Eater from absorbing the Sun, killing it and repairing the Sun in the process. However, it took everything he had to stop the Sun-Eater and Hal died saving the Earth.

Superman and Batman look into the Sun. Clark wishes it was him who sacrificed himself instead of Hal but he is happy that Hal redeemed himself. Bruce does not see it that way and he still sees Hal as a murderer as Hal himself claimed he didn’t change. Clark thinks people don’t notice they change and how he will always see Hal as a man who died a hero.

While Because Jim refuses to be brought back to life, the heroes were sent to Purgatory where they meet many dead heroes whose souls lie in the balance, including their former friend Hal Jordan. Alan Scott, the original Green Lantern now calling himself the Sentinel recommends that Hal should be the one to become Spectre’s new host as he is probably the only soul besides Corrigan with enough willpower to control the Spectre. While Wonder Woman thinks that Hal shouldn’t be the one to have that kind of power because he slaughtered the Green Lantern Corp, Alan knows that Hal is the right person. Hal tells them how he knows why some people hate him or fear him and he understands why as he did a lot of terrible things. He was a fool but he seeks redemption and changes his costume from Parallax back into his original Green Lantern costume and agrees to help.

As Wonder Woman and her team finally teleport back to Earth, Batman claims how they need to bring Corrigan as he is the man they can trust, not a murderer like Parallax. Why do they seek Vengeance?

Spectre chooses Hal Jordan as his new hostSpectre chooses Hal Jordan as his new host

Asmodel claims him and the Spectre are prisoners of Presence and he has to pay. Neron claims how he realizes vengeance and every soul that needs to be punished will be punished. As Hal tries to explain how he was a hero once and how he needs to stop criminals, he stops with tears in his eyes, claiming how he does not deserve Spectre’s Power. He does not deserve to seek vengeance. He is the one that deserves to be punished. He caused pain to everyone he loved. He murdered a lot of his friends. When Spectre hears those words, he bonds with Hal Jordan, punishing him for his actions and seeking vengeance will be his punishment.

As they finally become one and while Asmodel is locked up in Heaven, The Spectre tries to make Neron feel all the pain he has caused but Hal stopped him, refusing to put himself on Neron’s level who is demoted to a rhyming class Demon, suggested to have been Etrigan’s plan all along. Jim Corrigan tells Hal how all of Spectre’s host must battle for influence and Hal bonding with the Spectre was blessed by the Presence himself. Hal will control how he will use that power, either for Vengeance The Spectre seeks or for Redemption Hal seeks. With Kyle and Alan congratulating him, Hal leaves, claiming he has a lot of stuff to do and fixes all the damage Asmodel unleashed on New York and the planet Earth.

Phantom Stranger and Hal Jordan (now as the Spectre) decided to entrust the Spear of Destiny to The Sentinels of Magic which is now the only weapon capable of injuring Hal.

Rebirth of Green Lantern

Rebirth of the Green LanternRebirth of the Green Lantern
Rebirth of the Green Lantern

In 2005, Hal Jordan returned from the dead in the miniseries “Green Lantern: Rebirth” During this story it is revealed that the name “Parallax” came from an ancient yellow symbiote. Parallax was a creature that instilled great fear in entire civilizations, which made him stronger. Because of the menace Parallax represented, the Guardians imprisoned Parallax within the Central Power Battery on Oa. The imprisonment of Parallax was the reason behind the so called “yellow impurity” that made the Green Lanterns vulnerable to the color yellow. When Sinestro was also imprisoned in the Power Battery, he woke Parallax and they started an elaborate plan against the Guardians and the Green Lantern Corps. Parallax searched for a proper host in the Green Lantern Corps to infect, and he chose Hal Jordan of Earth.

After finding his objective, Parallax entered Hal’s ring and stayed there without being noticed. When Coast City was destroyed by Cyborg Superman and Mongul, the control of Parallax over Hal Jordan heavily increased, making him insane. It was also revealed that Sinestro never died and that it was only a illusion created by Sinestro to finally break the will of Hal Jordan and drive him completely over the edge. When Hal destroyed the Central Power Battery and killed the Guardians (except Ganthet) he accidentally let Parallax escape at his full power. This was the explanation to the lack of Kyle’s ring vulnerability against the color yellow. This story concludes when – thanks to the Spectre, Ganthet, Kyle Rayner, Guy Gardner, John Stewart and Kilowog – Hal returns from the death again as a Green Lantern without any influence of the Spectre or Parallax.

After the events of Rebirth, Hal moved to Coast City which was being reconstructed. He also became a captain in the Air Force of the United States. He also starts to rebuild his friendship with Batman who finally accepts that Hal is a hero once again.

Hal vs Sinestro

Jordan’s greatest enemy, Sinestro, starts building an army with yellow power rings that chose as their wielders people who can instill great fear. Just after that he attacks Oa when Hal and the Green Lanterns of Earth (among others) were waiting to talk to the Guardians of the Universe. After a full attack against Oa a great amount of Green Lanterns die and Sinestro releases both Cyborg Superman and Superboy-Prime. He is also able to kidnap Kyle Rayner and take the symbiote out of him. After instilling great fear in the heart of Kyle, he fuses him with Parallax. After the attack Hal along with Guy Gardner and John Stewart try to reach Qward and save Kyle. However after trying to charge their power rings, wakes up in Qward without Guy and John, and outnumbered by Sinestro, the new Parallax and an army of members of the Sinestro Corps. After Hal failed to try to save Kyle of the Parallax influence, he tries to flee the planet.

Just when he was going to be defeated, he is saved by “The Lost Lanterns“. The Green Lanterns go underground and split into two teams, the first one to save John and Guy and the other one to rescue Ion. Hal, Graf Toren and Tomar-Re are encountered by the keeper of the book of Parallax, Lyssa Drak by causing an explosion when John and Guy got free. As his power rings were reaching 0.0, he was saved by John Stewart and Guy Gardner. Hal then says, “I need a weapon, or weapons.” Hal then wields a group of Sinestro’s yellow rings. He and the remaining Lost Lanterns make it out of Qward. As the Sinestro Corps uses their attack plan the Guardians use their Last Resort and authorize lethal force against the Sinestro Corps.

The mission is a success and the Green Lantern of Earth returned to their planet, just to find out that the Sinestro Corps never wanted to take control of Oa, their real objective was always Earth. Hal saves his family before Parallax (Kyle Rayner) can kill them. During the confrontation Parallax also absorbs Hal and became even more powerful. While Hal is inside Parallax, he helps Kyle to get rid of the influences of Parallax. After being freed from the evil influence, Ganthet and Sayd appear and trap Parallax inside the batteries of the four Green Lanterns of Earth. Hal and Kyle go back to Coast City and use Hal’s ring to warn everyone there to evacuate the city. Hal’s family refuses to leave, just like everyone else in the city. The people of Coast City start setting green lights in their houses to prove their support to the protector of Coast City, Green Lantern, thus making Coast City to be known to the world as the “City Without Fear”.

During the last battle against Sinestro, Hal realizes that Sinestro always wanted that the Guardians of the Universe to sanction the use of lethal force. Sinestro uses the Manhunters to absorb the energy from the rings of both Hal and Kyle. After they are being attacked by Sinestro, Hal uses the head of a Manhunter to also absorb the energy from the ring of Sinestro. Him and Kyle battle Sinestro in a hand to hand fight jumping into a unfinished building. While the other Green Lanterns destroy the Sinestro Corps battery it explodes; Anti-Monitor, Cyborg Superman, and his army of of Manhunters are caught in the explosion. Hal and Kyle defeat Sinestro.

Origins & Omens of Green Lantern

Hal as a Red Lantern

Hal Jordan meets Saint Walker. Saint Walker, who is the first of the Blue Lanterns, tries to persuade Hal to abandon the Green Lantern Corps and become a Blue Lantern. Saint Walker brought Hal to the Blue Lantern planet of Odym. He showed him the Blue Lantern battery and Hal also saw the leaders of the Blue Lantern Corps. They were none other than Ganthet and Sayd who were former members of the Guardians of the Universe who started the Green Lantern Corps. Hal and Saint Walker watched as Ganthet and Sayd were about to initiate a new member to the Corps. Warth then was made into the second member of the Blue Lantern Corps. Saint Walker mentioned to Hal that the initiation took a very long time to be completed as Ganthet and Sayd would have to judge them and see if they are truly worthy to be a Blue Lantern. Warth and Saint Walker were then sent on a mission to save Sinestro from the Red Lanterns and to recruit him to the Blue Lantern Corps. On their way there, Hal noticed that his power levels were above maximum and they explained that the rings of a Blue Lantern charged the rings of a Green Lantern. As they passed a planet on the way, its sun in the process of imminent supernova. Jordan attempted to call for backup but was unable to because of the interference of Warth and Saint Walker’s rings. Warth and Saint Walker combined their power and were able to heal the sun and reverse its aging. Saint Walker then explained what their ultimate purpose was for him. That purpose was to lead the Blue Lantern Corps.

Hal went ahead of Saint Walker and Warth and finally got to the planet where Sinestro was being kept captive by the Red Lanterns. Hal found Sinestro and was ambushed by Red Lanterns. As they fought, Hal’s energy levels severely dropped. Hal saw that one of the Red Lanterns that ambushed him was none other than Laira who was a friend to Hal when they were both members of the Green Lantern Corps. Hal was tied up and held captive along with Sinestro. The Sinestro Corps then arrived to save Sinestro from the Red Lanterns. As the two Corps fought each other, Warth and Saint Walker then arrived. They freed Hal and charged up his ring again. The Blue Lanterns meant no harm and told Sinestro to call off his followers. Saint walker was then attacked by Atrocitus, leader of the Red Lanterns. Laira then attacked Hal and had him on the ground. Sinestro took action and killed Laira before she hurt Hal. Hal then was angry because Sinestro killed his friend and then Hal released all his anger and hatred towards Sinestro. Hal was about to kill Sinestro when the unexpected happened. Hal was chosen to become a Red Lantern and was then corrupted by the ring. Hal was now a Red Lantern and fought the Blue Lanterns and the Sinestro Corps. As the Blue Lanterns rely on the power of a Green Lantern to keep

their power levels, Saint Walker and Warth had all their energy drained from their rings as there was no Green Lantern in sight. Saint Walker was able to put a Blue ring on Hal Jordan’s finger and Hal was no longer corrupted by the Red ring. Hal then became a Blue Lantern and a Green Lantern at the same time. Hal defeated the Red Lanterns and they left Ysmault. Hal’s love, Carol Ferris was recruited to become a servant of love, a member of the Violet Lanterns.

Agent Orange

Hal returns to Odym, home-world of the Blue Lanterns, with Saint Walker and Warth. Hal tries removing the Blue power ring he now wields, but he is unable to remove it. Hal and the Blue Lanterns argue about Hal not having any hope. Hal tries to locate Ganthet and Sayd using his ring, but they cannot be located. Ganthet and Sayd then appear to Hal and the two Blue Lanterns. They tell them that Hal is meant to lead the Blue Lanterns, not as a Blue Lantern, but as a Green Lantern. Walker is then provided a new power ring as his is now with Hal. He then leaves Odym in order to find Sinestro. The Blue Lanterns stay behind in Odym as they are to continue recruiting new members to their Corps. They also have another mission which is to locate those who wield the Indigo light. As Hal goes to find Sinestro, he is sent back to Oa to meet with the Guardians. The Guardians try removing the Blue ring from Hal’s finger but they are unable to do so. Hal tries to explain to them that Ganthet and Sayd are not enemies and their real enemies were the Red Lanterns. John then interrupts the Guardians as another colour Lantern has been encountered. Larfleeze then appeared as he and a message for the Guardians. They took something from him and he says that he will descend his Corps on their Green Lanterns. The Guardians then say that it is about time they joined the war themselves.

In Oa, The Guardians added a fourth law to the Book of Oa. That rule was that the Vega System was no longer outside the Green Lantern Corps’ jurisdiction. Meanwhile, Gretti decides that he must return home to sector 2828. Hal, along with the Guardians and the Green Lanterns then go on their way to arrest those criminals in the Vega System. Hal explains that the Guardians couldn’t remove the blue ring from his hand and that they wanted to see the power of the ring in battle. Thousands of felons were currently present in the Vega System. However, their main target wasn’t the felons, but Larfleeze. Hal, the Lanterns and the Guardians then land on Sector 2828 where they see Gretti. The Guardians then try connecting to Larfleeze who is currently in Gretti’s homeworld. Controllers then spawn around them and a battle begins. During the fight, Gretti is killed and then becomes an Orange Lantern, serving Agent Orange. Hal then gets dragged underground by an orange light. Underground, he sees none other than Larfleeze who was waiting for Hal. He sees the blue ring of Hal and tells Hal that he wants it.

Hal is still trapped underground. He can smell Larfleeze and he knows that he’s there, but he can’t see him. Hal Jordan was still spared as it was still feeding

time for Larfleeze at that moment. He talks to Hal and tells him about him being the owner of the Orange Lanterns. He says that he was tasted a green ring already before, but he has never tasted one as sweet as the blue ring Hal wields on his finger. The ring asks Larfleeze what he hopes for and he says that he hopes for many desirables and one is a blue ring of his own. Hal then attacks Larfleeze once the blue light had blinded him. Meanwhile, the Guardians and other Green Lanterns fight against other Orange Lantern constructs. John Stewart holds his own against several but is taken down by one of them. When it seems as if he’s about to be defeated, Fatality, a Violet Lantern, comes in and helps him. Larfleeze and Hal keep fighting until Larfleeze finally apprehends him. Hal offers him a deal. He said he’d trade his blue ring in exchange for words. Hal wanted to know how Larfleeze became Agent Orange and how he met the Guardians. Larfleeze then started telling Hal about his origins story. Now, he wants to take the blue ring from Hal to complete the deal. However, Hal can’t take it off and Larfleeze takes action. He forms a giant sword from his constructs and chops off Hal’s arm. He then takes the ring and puts it on his finger. The ring then welcomed Larfleeze to the Blue Lantern Corps.

Larfleeze sees that now he’s a member of the Blue Lanterns. However, it was all just an illusion created by Hal’s ring in order to defend itself. Larfleeze gets angered and attacks Hal again. This time though, Hal uses the same strategy that Larfleeze has been using and Hal creates constructs of the members of the Green Lantern Corps. Another illusion is made as John Stewart and Fatality reunite during the battle. John later realizes that it was all just an illusion. Hal and Larfleeze continue fighting when the Guardians come in and interrupt. Hal gets an idea that he can separate the Orange Battery from Larfleeze so that he could beat him. Hal manages to get hold of it as the Guardians distracted Larfleeze. Hal then started to glow an orange light as he was about to join the Orange Lantern Corps. Before he truly became a part of the corps, Larfleeze attacked him and took back his battery. Larfleeze just gets pissed off and his power levels were at a very high level. He attacked the Lanterns and Hal. The blue ring asked Hal what he hoped for and Hal said that he hoped for the ring to stop asking him that. The ring sensed sincerity and decided to listen to Hal. His power levels started to drop and eventually the ring left him and went off to find a new replacement. The Guardians then decide to talk to Larfleeze and set a deal with him. Hal and the rest of the Lanterns get sent outside to let them talk. They agreed that Larfleeze would no longer cause them conflict but the Guardians also told Larfleeze where he could get a blue ring of his own. In Odym, Ganthet, Sayd and the rest of the Blue Lanterns see an orange light coming their way, headed by Larfleeze.

Blackest Night

For further details: Blackest Night

William Hand starts hearing the voices of the dead calling his name. He sees his life flash back to when he first became the Black Hand. It also showed how he got the rod when Hal Jordan and Sinestro, who was still a Green Lantern, were on earth to arrest Atrocitus. He’s possessed and ends up killing his family and himself as well with the rod he found when he first became the Black Hand. William is dead and Scar appears over his dead body. She says that William is ready and she gives his body a black ring. William rises with the power of the black ring and the dead which officially begins the Blackest Night.

It’s memorial day for all the dead heroes on earth. The people, heroes, and even the villains visit the graves of those who have passed away. Hal, with the rest of the Green Lanterns of Sector 2814, flies to the memorial and are cheered on by the crowd. They remember their loved ones who have passed away. The different heroes who have passed are all being honored around the world. Alfred also visits the grave of Bruce Wayne but is shocked as someone dug up his grave and took his skull. He contacts Hal who at the time was in the headquarters of the Justice League of America along with Barry Allen. Hal shows the Barry where they kept the remains of those who have also passed away. Barry asks Hal to show him more and to show him everyone else who has died while he was gone.

Throughout all the sectors, the different corps wage war on each other which fulfills the War of Light. The Guardians watch over the war from Oa. They decide to tell all Green Lanterns to retreat. Scar says however, that they will not receive the call for retreat and she attacks her fellow Guardians. She bites and rips off the heart of one of the Guardians and traps the rest of the Guardians where they are. Meanwhile, the black rings have been released and fly to the graves of those who have passed away. All the remains and bodies of the dead are then told to rise and they did, but this time, as Black Lanterns.

Hal and BarryHal and Barry
Hal and Barry

Hal and Barry go to Gotham to check the grave site of Bruce. They try thinking who could have dug up the grave and who could have known that Bruce was Batman. As they talk to each other, a dark image flies their way. It was the Martian Manhunter who now is a Black Lantern. He says that Hal and Barry should both be dead and that they shouldn’t be back. J’onn attacks the two heroes and forces them to retreat. They escape for the moment but J’onn continues his rage and destroys a building. Hal and Barry still continue to run but Barry sees J’onn and attacks him. He beats on J’onn but as it turns out, Barry was just seeing things and it was actually Hal he was attacking.

Commissioner Gordon sets off the bat-signal in order to get some help in Gotham. Hal, however, comes crashing through the signal. Hal talks to him and to Barbara for a bit while Barry fights J’onn. He traps J’onn in a sewer mixed with different flammable chemicals. Hal comes flying in and drops a police car on the chemicals which causes a huge explosion. Barry keeps the flame from spreading around by running around J’onn and he creates somewhat a giant furnace. The two heroes think that J’onn is now defeated as fire was his weakness. They plan on moving his body back to Mars to let him rest in peace. However, J’onn comes out of the rubble along with several other Black Lanterns. Ex-Green Lantern on Sector 2814 and the man who gave Hal his ring, Abin Sur, also rises as a Black Lantern.

Meanwhile, more rings go across the universe and raise more Black Lanterns. Sinestro also gets freed from his “cell” in Zamaron during a fight between the Star Sapphires and the Sinestro Corps. Sinestro confronts Carrol and questions her on why she became a Star Sapphire and she says that she’s there for Hal. Carrol gets captured by the Sinestro Corps but her captors are immediately killed by a group of Black Lanterns, lead by Abin Sur, who confront Carrol and Sinestro.

Hal and Barry continue to fend off a group of Black Lanterns. Hal is targeted by both Hawkman and Hawkgirl. Hal and Barry try everything they can to stop this since their enemies couldn’t be killed. They tried running away and Barry even tries removing the ring of Firestorm. As Hal and Hawkman continue to fight, Ray Palmer emerges from inside his black ring. He tells Hal that their ring is nothing like the ring he carries on his finger. They continue to try escaping until they are finally caught by the group of Black Lanterns. But before anything could happen, they are save by two Indigo Lanterns and are brought to the JLA base. One of them reveals that she is Indigo-1, leader of the Indigo tribe.

She tells them about the beginning of the universe. The time when the universe was still ruled by darkness. Until there was light which fought the darkness. Out of the fight came the different groups of the emotional spectrum. She tells them about all the different colors in the emotional spectrum and their purposes. She tells Hal that they have come to him in order to replicate the white light of creation by merging with the other corps to put a stop to the Blackest Night. She knows that Hal has strong connections to the most powerful members of the other five remaining corps. Hall and Barry talk again about what they should do. But then, they are attacked again by the same group of Black Lanterns. The Indigo Lanterns then transport themselves and Hal away from the danger, leaving the others behind.

Hal and the two Indigo Lanterns are transported to Zamaron. They meet both Sinestro and Carol Ferris there during their own fight against Black Lanterns. Hal and Carol talk about her decision to become a Star Sapphire once again while they continue to fend off Black Lanterns. Hal also teaches them how to destroy a Black Lantern by sanitizing their rings with their light. Indigo-1 then transports Hal, Carol, and Sinestro out of Zamaron and to Korugar.

Sinestro quickly attacks Indigo-1 as they left the other members of his corps behind. She tells him why she transported them there, for Sinestro to confront and defeat Mongul. Sinestro has a tough time and it seems like he’s about to be beaten by Mongul until he takes control of his yellow rings, which he created himself. He traps Mongul without killing him so that he would not reincarnate as a Black Lantern, but he tells him that once the war is over, he will kill Mongul personally. Sinestro is in control of his corps once again and they start to give praise to him. Suddenly, a black ship crashes and Abin and Arin Sur both emerge from it as Black Lanterns.

On Ysmault, Atrocitus is attacked as well and has his heart ripped out by a Black Lantern. Hal and Sinestro defend themselves against the two new Black Lanterns. Sinestro and Arin continue to fight as they talk about the love they once had. Hal and Abin are left to fight each other and Abin continues to insult Hal. Hal seemingly kills Abin, but he heals himself instantly. Indigo-1 and Carrol Ferris come to aid Sienstro and Hal. Together, the four lanterns use their combined mights and they defeat the two Black Lanterns.

They start to talk about who to go to next. Hal wants to go to Saint Walker first because they know that he can be trusted. Atrocitus seems to be the one the rest want to go after, though. They decide to go to Odym and talk to Saint Walker instead. When they arrived in Odym, they were caught in the war between the lanterns of blue and orange. Suddenly, the Orange Lanterns just disappear. Meanwhile, on Okaara, Larfleeze is shown running for his life and pleading for help as he is chased by a group of Black Lanterns. The Black Lanterns are slaughtered by none other than Atrocitus, who remains as a Red Lantern, whose heart was replaced by his rage. Atrocitus tells Larfleeze that he wants his power battery.

New GuardiansNew Guardians
New Guardians

As Atrocitus and Larfleeze fight, they also get attacked by the slaves of Larfleeze’s corps who are now Black Lanterns. They fend off the lanterns while fighting each other until Hal Jordan and the rest of the lanterns from the different spectrum of light come to aid them. They ask Atrocitus and Larfleeze to join them in order to put an end to the Blackest Night. Larfleeze agrees to join as long as he gets a Guardian of his own when it’s all done and Sayd agrees to be his Guardian. Atrocitus also agrees to join after fighting them and talking to Saint Walker. They go to Space Sector 666, the planet Ryut, home of Atrocitus, after the power levels of the Black Lantern Corps reached 100%. The Black Battery was nowhere to be found and they all set-off to where it has been moved, Earth.

Barry Allen fends off the risen dead in Coast City, where the battery has been moved. Before Black Hand could lay his hands on him, Wally West and a group of the heroes of Earth arrive to help them. They tell Barry about how Dove produces the White Light that fends off the Black Lanterns. Wally, Barry, and Bart see the Guardians being held captive. They try to free them all, but Scar gets in their way. The team of lanterns then arrive just in time to stop Scar’s attack. After Scar is destroyed by their combined might, they go after the black battery. They attack it, but their attacks don’t do anything to the battery. A ring then flies to the skull that Black Hand was holding and Bruce Wayne rises as a Black Lantern. Everyone sees Bruce in his new form and more rings come flying towards the heroes. Nekron then orders several of the heroes to die and become Black Lanterns as well. Nekron says that Bruce has now served his purpose and he destroys him and puts him back to rest. Superman, Wonder Woman, Ice, Bart Allen, Animal Man, Super-boy, Donna Troy and Green Arrow all have become Black Lanterns and Nekron makes one more order, and that is for Barry Allen and Hal Jordan to die.

The Black Rings continue to chase after the two heroes. They figure out that the rings can also turn those who have died. but are now alive, into Black Lanterns as well. Hal holds on to Barry as he outruns the Black Rings chasing them. Barry runs two seconds into the future to get the rings to stop chasing them. john Stewart warns them that all the Black Lanterns are heading to the Earth. Ganthet then reveals a secret of the power rings. He duplicates Hal’s ring and wears it on his finger. He does the same to the rings of the other members that were there. The ring duplicates can only last for a day, however. The rings get new recruits to aid the team of Lanterns in the war of Light. A Blue Ring latches on Barry Allen’s finger, an Orange ring on Lex Luthor’s finger, a Yellow Ring on the Scarecrow’s finger, an Indigo Ring on Ray Palmer’s finger, a Red Ring on Mera’s finger and a Violet Ring on Wonder Woman’s finger which destroys the Black Ring she had on her.

While defending Coast City, the Lanterns encountered a Black Lantern Spectre and are overwhelmed by the powerful foe, threatening Hal into almost becoming a Black Lantern himself. Remembering when he was possessed by the Spectre, Hal remembered Parallax is the one thing that the Spirit of Retribution fears most and allows himself to be possessed by the fear entity once more in order to stop him. Soon after, the fear entity is taken from Hal by an unknown force. During the fight against Nekron, the Entity is summoned and attacked by Nekron. Hal soon realizes that the Entity is like Parallax and Ion and goes toward the Entity but is stopped by Sinestro. Sinestro then dives into the Entity and emerges as a white lantern.

Sinestro’s ego proved to be his downfall, as he could not fully command the Entity’s power and Nekron forcibly separated them. Hal realized that even though Nekron allowed his resurrection along with the other heroes transformed into Black Lanterns, it was they who made the choice to live again. This enabled Hal to join with the Entity and transform himself and the other heroes converted by Nekron into the White Lantern Corps. They then used their collective power to restore Black Hand to life, severing his connection to Nekron, leading to his defeat.

Brightest Day/The New Guardians

For further details: Brightest Day

After the events of Blackest Night, Hal Jordan, Sinestro, and the other corps create a intergalactic truce after the clean up of Coast City. Later Hal Jordan and Guy Gardner go to Mars to visit the recently risen J’ohn J’onzz to follow up on him and bring gifts (Oreos and Milk) and talk about how J’ohn is going to make Mars “live again”. Afterward back on Earth, Hal and Carol are at a Air Force bar reminiscing over old times sharing how hard it is talk about the past at a table. The two (“Highball” and “Sapphire”) later decide to fly in Ferris jet planes when suddenly Sinestro collides with both Hal and Carol (similar to Secret Origins). Sinestro disobeyed the truce in less than 24 hours but after a few “harsh” words Sinestro tells Hal that he has found the White Lantern entity and “it’s asking for you.”

On arrival at the scene where the White Lantern is stationed (Silver City, New Mexico), Sinestro explains how after the entity dissipated into the sky coalescing itself back together. Hal then finds out the truth that Sinestro couldn’t lift the lantern himself and tries to lift it unsuccessfully. Carol then refers the lantern as “The Sword in the Stone” and needs it’s “King Arthur” to lift it.

Carol then decides to attempt to lift it too. When she too fails Hal assist her, but Sinestro afraid the power would go to Hal and Carol, him included tries to lift the lantern. Suddenly the lantern activates in a white blast showing the life connections of the resurrected and says “HELP ME LIVE!”. Getting up from the blast Hal and the others see the “dead” forms of the resurrected. The White Lantern speaks to them again saying “FIND THEM” showing the entities. Hal then says “Where are they?”. It responds when Hal grabs onto it “Atrocitus will help”. The 3 are transported to New York where below in the sub-way system Atrocitus has “tried” to save people. During a conversation, Carol senses love in Atrocitus heart and he is outraged. A fight is taken outside when suddenly Lobo appears grabbing Hal’s neck by chains. Atrocitus, Sinestro, and Carol help Hal battle Lobo. All of a sudden, the fight ends quickly because Lobo flees. Hal suspects that something is wrong because he states that fighting Lobo is usually hard and he noticed that Lobo looked “bored” when they were fighting him.

Guardian

Along his journey with the Green Lantern Corps, Hal is awarded for his loyalty, he was promoted to a Guardian shortly after defeated Nekron, the lord of the underworld, and also after he banished Krona the rebellion for the second time, Hal was Abin Sur’s Predecessor, after he took the ring of Sur, he has contributed to the Corps more than any other. He has always been seen as the leader of The Green Lantern Corps.

War of The Green Lanterns

Hal Jordan teams up with the members of the other lanterns of the emotional spectrum, Sinestro, Atrocitus, Iroque, Carol Ferris, Larfleeze and Saint Walker in order to retrieve the emotional entities that were taken by the renegade guardian, Krona. The lanterns are able to lock onto residual energy left by Krona (who is at this point pursuing the last of the emotional entities, the Predator) – leading them to Ryut.

In the meantime, the Guardians of the Universe begin to question the existence of the green lantern corps. With the news that Hal Jordan, infamous amongst the guardians for his repeated insubordination, is now teaming up with the other lantern corps (for reasons unknown to them), the guardians dispatch a group of lanterns, led by Salaak, to bring Hal back to Oa to answer to charges of treason.

The Book of the BlackThe Book of the Black
The Book of the Black

On Ryut, the lanterns encounter The Book of the Black – the book of the black lantern corps that foretold the blackest night – just as Abin Sur had stated all those years ago. However, waiting for them there is Lyssa Drak – former keeper of the book of the Sinestro Corps, and now working with Krona to help imprison the lanterns, which is now pulling them into the book as prisoners. Hal and Sinestro attempt to break the hold of the book, but this ultimately proves unsuccessful, and Hal is the only one able to escape imprisonment due to the blast that he and Sinestro had conjured up in the hope of breaking the book’s hold. All that remains of the other lanterns are their rings. It is at this time that Salaak’s crew arrives to apprehend Hal.

Back on Oa, Krona returns and attacks the Guardians by releasing the emotional entities onto them to take host of, before restoring Parallax as the impurity into the central battery of the Green Lanterns Corps. With this, Krona is able to take immediate telepathic control of each member of the Green Lanterns Corps except for Kilowog, Kyle Rayner, John Stewart, Ganthet, Guy Gardner and Hal. This is due to the fact that each of these individuals had previously been possessed by Parallax (during Green Lantern: Rebirth) and were immune to its influence, or at least enjoyed a delayed infection. On Ryut, Salaak’s crew is overcome by Krona’s influence and proceed to attack Hal. Fortunately, Jordan was able to escape, taken the rings of the imprisoned lanterns with him.

Hal and Guy (Kilowog sacrificing himself so that Guy could get help) are later able to meet on the Greenhouse – a Safe House planet in space sector 2000 where the Green Lantern Corps established just in case the security of Oa was breached (after Guy had sent out a distress signal). As Hal and Guy enlighten each other on the events surrounding the corps, before Parallax is slowly able to infect their minds, causing them to fight against themselves – which they later realize and promptly remove their rings. On the Greenhouse, Hal and Guy locate the underground hanger where they find the Interceptor – a spaceship powered by the artificial intelligence unit, Aya, and fly back to Oa.

Beware Our Power!Beware Our Power!
Beware Our Power!

Once there, Hal and Guy meet up with Kyle and John (who are now hiding underground, thanks to the intervention of Ganthet that was able to remove their rings as Parallax was infecting their minds). Once safely away from the dangers above, Hal presents the rings of the lanterns that were taken hostage in the Book of the Black. Hal suggests that since they are unable to weld their Green Power Rings in order to escape Krona’s influence, they should each wield one of the power rings from the other Corps, as this is their best attempt to rid Oa of Krona’s evil-doing. Hal and Guy choose Yellow and Red respectively (from their previous experience with the rings (see Sinestro Corps War and Blackest Night), whilst Kyle and John choose Blue and Indigo respectively.

As the Earth Lanterns accept the rings they are attacked by a squadron of Green Lanterns and decide that the best course of action is to locate Ganthet, as he had been the one to help John and Kyle escape from Krona-possessed corps members. The team are later attacked by Mogo, forcing them to abandon Ganthet and flee deeper underground.

The Earth lanterns vote that in order to neutralize the threat of Krona, the team needs to locate Oa’s Central Power Battery and remove Parallax, thereby removing Krona’s mind control over the lanterns – as opposed to John’s proposition that Mogo must first be neutralized in order for them to successfully assault the battery. The Earth lanterns later come across an old antique room that was built by the Guardians that none of the lanterns knew about. This place is known as the foundry – the place where the batteries and rings are forged. It is later revealed that Mogo has been sending out ‘tainted’ rings to search for new recruits, and as a result, create a massive army of Green Lanterns that would bend to every whim of Krona in his quest to destroy the Green Lantern corps. It is at this point that Kyle sides with John and tells the other Lanterns that Mogo has now become their most pressing matter. John then uses his new-found Indigo power set to transport Kyle and himself to Mogo, abandoning Hal and Guy.

Hal and Guy, Guardians of the Universe?

Hal and Guy later reach Oa’s core and then begin blasting through in order to reach the central power battery, but are then attacked by the entity-empowered guardians, and apprehended by Krona and his new-found power set. Krona later reveals to Hal and Guy that he intends to impose a new-universe order whereby the Guardians would be removed from their position, having presided over the universe for billions of years, due to their incapacity to show emotion. Instead, he has bonded Hal and Guy with bandages to prepare them for their roles as the new guardians alongside himself.

Hal and Guy later free themselves as Krona suffers a migraine (as well as the rest of the indoctrinated corps members) brought on by John’s destruction Mogo – the heart of the Green Lantern Corps. With Krona’s constructs now weakened, Hal and Guy break free, and rescue Ganthet – who was also taken captive by the rogue guardian. John and Kyle teleport back to Oa to help Hal and Guy remove Parallax from the Central Power Battery, but find that their combined power alone is not enough to penetrate the casing of the battery. Ganthet suggests that the strongest possibility of breaking the battery is by using the full emotional spectrum on it, which leads to Guy taking the Violet Power Ring in addition to his red lantern ring. As the lanterns and Ganthet blast the central power battery, they are attacked by the Green Lantern Corps.

Showdown

Ganthet then tells Guy that since he possesses the two extreme emotions of the spectrum, he is their only hope of penetrating the central power battery while the other Earth lanterns and Ganthet hold off the other corps members. Guy succeeds and Parallax is removed from the central power battery – freeing the minds of the other corps members. This allows the Earth lanterns to once again wield their green power rings and take on Krona and the entity-wielding Guardians in a final showdown, whom have just entered the scene.

Realising that the only way Hal and Kyle were able to break free from Parallax taking host of their bodies (see Green Lantern: Rebirth, Sinestro Corps War and Blackest Night) was by going through an “emotional exorcism, Hal realizes that since the Guardians have no emotion, the only way to purge their bodies is by contacting the entities – which needs to be done by freeing the lanterns from the The Book of the Black. This is done by Kyle, the artist, drawing the release of the lanterns directly into the book. However, once the lanterns are freed, their rings do not return to them, but instead all go to Krona.

Hal Kills Krona

With death nearly imminent for Hal, Sinestro attempts to help Hal in face of certain death by attacking Krona without any power ring. Sinestro and Hal are then chained to face execution when a green power ring searches out Sinestro, reinstating him as a Green Lantern. Hal and Sinestro then break free, and Hal then charges Krona, using all of his willpower to kill Krona with an explosive blast.

The entities are then freed themselves from the guardians, and the rings return to their previous owners, except for the Sinestro Corps Ring which has gone on to find a replacement for Sinestro and his home space sector, 1417. Hal, however, encourages Sinestro to remove the ring from himself before more tensions arise, but before anything happens, the Guardians now speak.

Lantern no more!

The Guardians, now free, decide that in light of the present circumstances (the destruction of Mogo, the re-emergence of Sinestro as Green Lantern corps member), the past acts of insubordination and transgression against the Guardians, and for having the willpower to kill a guardian (an ability thought to be impossible by any corps member), to expel Hal Jordan as a member of the Green Lantern corps, stripping him of his ring and sending him to Earth, despite the protests by Ganthet and Saint Walker.

Sinestro

After Hal Jordan lost his ring, he finds himself empty: unable to pay his (overdue) rent, and being arrested after mistaking a the filming of a movie for an actual crime. After a misunderstanding with Carol (after he asks her to co-sign the lease on his car, when she was expecting him to propose to her), he is left to walk home in the rain to his apartment, where he finds out he is being evicted.

Sinestro is waiting for him, claiming that if he wants to return to being a Green Lantern, he must do everything he says. Sinestro then forges Hal a new ring, made from his own ring – claiming that he is giving Hal another chance to do his duty as a Green Lantern – or at least Sinestro’s perception of what being a Green Lantern Corps member means. Hal tries to attack Sinestro, but it has no effect. Sinestro then reveals that he made it and that it has all the abilities of a Green Lantern ring but it is unable to harm Sinestro and has the ability to turn it off at anytime.

Mission: Liberate KorugarMission: Liberate Korugar
Mission: Liberate Korugar

Sinestro explains that he gave him the ring because he needs help freeing his home world, Korugar, from the corps he created. The Sinestro Corps had perverted Sinestro’s ideal of order and had gone on to enslave his planet. Hal reluctantly agrees to help. They arrive at Korugar and Sinestro develops a plan. They’ll wait till sun down, and Sinestro will attack to distract his corps members while Hal takes a lantern to the Yellow Power Battery. But the plan goes wrong when Sinestro sees a woman named Arsona attack a Corps member. He rushes into to save her and Hal heads toward the power battery. Once Hal enters the power battery, it refuses to acknowledge him as he is not Sinestro and spits him out along with his Lantern.

Sinestro and Hal are both captured by the Sinestro Corps and imprisoned. After being tortured by his former Corpsmen, Sinestro is placed within a cell with survivors of Korugar, to whom Sinestro grants each a copied ring, much like the one he gave Hal. These new temporary Green Lanterns escape their cell and defeat the Sinestro Corps members. Sinestro apologizes to the people for what he has done, however Arsona does not forgive him and tells him to leave, which he does along with the now imprisoned Sinestro Corps and the Yellow Power Battery. Sinestro explains to Hal that their pact is complete and takes off for Oa, hurling Hal back to Earth where the ring he is wearing runs out of power once and for all, and Hal and Carol rekindle their relationship.

As Sinestro arrives back on Oa, the Guardians discuss replacing the Green Lanterns and freeing the First Lantern to lead the Third Army. Sinestro however, heads for the planet Oguro, where he confronts Starstorm, a former foe of his, and forces him to help find Lyssa Drak. The two quickly find her and they fight, with Lyssa still empowered by the Yellow Light of Fear. It is revealed she possesses the Book of the Black, and as they fight Sinestro has a vision of the Guardians plans given to him by the book. Eventually he overcomes Lyssa’s powers, defeating her and flying off world, leaving Starstorm behind stating that he is no Hal Jordan.

Sinestro threatens to kill Carol if Hal doesn’t comply

After freeing Korugar from the Sinestro Corps, Hal is enjoying life once again with Carol, until once again Sinestro appears and forces the Green Power Ring to slip on Hal’s finger. Hal refuses, saying that he’s never going to work for anyone again; except for Carol. Sinestro threatens shoot Carol in the head if he does to come with him, but Hal punches him and they begin to fight. Sinestro tells Hal that he has seen glimpses of the prophecies from the Book of the Black, and tells Hal that the prophecies said that the Guardians are going to replace the Green Lantern Corps. At this point the Indigo Tribe arrive on Earth, and when Hal asks the Tribe’s leader, Iroque what she is doing on Earth, she answers that they are here for Sinestro because it was a mistake for the Guardians to let Hal keeps his ring. Iroque tells Hal to fly away, but Hal refuses, saying that he needs Sinestro to tell him about the Guardians. As Hal tries to reason with Iroque, she creates a plane construct and hits him with it. Carol attempts to rescue Hal by putting on her Violet Power Ring, but it is too late. As the Indigo Tribe start to teleport, Hal flies into them and so he is teleported with them. Hal wakes up in a cell on the prison planet Nok with a ring which is once again out of charge. He is confronted by another prisoner from the cell next to him, who begs Hal to free him and threatens to tear Hal’s arm off if he doesn’t. Suddenly, the prisoner is blasted by Black Hand, who appears in front of Hal. Black Hand starts to speak in a language that the Indigo Tribe speak, and he mentions the name “Abin Sur“. Hal asks what Abin Sur has to do with this, but is given no answer. Black Hand then tells Hal that Sinestro will be reborn into the Indigo Tribe like he has.

Hal tells Black Hand that he thought he was hiding on Earth, and Black Hand replies that he was actually taken and healed by the Indigo Tribe, who gave him empathy and compassion. Black Hand starts showing Hal that he can cycle through the entire Emotional Spectrum, and Hal tricks him, saying that there’s no use trying to get through to Sinestro if Black Hand can’t channel willpower. Black Hand says that he can in fact channel willpower, and shows Hal a ray of green light, which is just the light that Hal needed to charge his ring. Hal says the Green Lantern oath and blasts his way out of the cell. He attacks Black Hand, telling him to take him to Iroque. Black Hand fights back, shooting a blast back at Hal. Shrapnel stabs Hal in the arm, and he is confused, saying that the green force field’s supposed to protect him from shrapnel. Next, Hal is attacked by prisoners, but he overcomes them and escapes.

The Indigo Tribe are now chasing after him, and while on the run Hal attempts to fly but nearly falls to his death. Luckily, he grabs on to a chain on the way down, and asks his ring why the it’s not working. The ring says that the power charge on the ring is simulated energy, meaning Hal’s abilities are limited. He can, nevertheless, create constructs, thus he swings himself back onto the platform and rides on a motorbike out of there. Hal can’t seem to find his way through the prison and so his ring gives him a map and some information about the place, like the fact that it is around half the size of the entire planet. While trying to find Sinestro, Hal comes across a huge statue of Abin Sur, his predecessor Green Lantern, and is shocked. The statue tells him that Abin Sur is the Indigo Tribe’s saviour and creator. As he hears this, he is attacked by Sinestro, the latest member of the Indigo Tribe.

When Sinestro confronts Hal, he tells Hal that he is sorry for everything he’s ever done to him. Hal replies that now he really knows that Sinestro has been brainwashed with compassion. Hal blasts Sinestro and flees once again, and asks the Indigo Tribe why they are chasing after him if Green Lanterns and the Indigo Tribe were on the same side. Iroque replies that they are, thus she’ll teleport Hal back to his home safely. Hal refuses to leave without Sinestro, and so he escapes into the Forbidden Jungles, the place his ring told him was where the Indigo Central Battery was. Hal then finds a cavern, where he comes across Natromo, the Keeper of the Indigo Light. Hal then asks him for information, to which Natromo replies “Nok”. Hal is irritated, demanding to know what “Nok” actually means. Natromo calls him un-educated, and tells Hal that “Nok” roughly means “compassion be with you”.

Next Natromo tells Hal the origins of the Indigo Tribe, and how he and Abin Sur created the Tribe. When Abin Sur came to Nok to fight the explorers who were invading the planet, he fought the invaders along side Natromo, the last of his native people. Then they discovered the power of Indigo Light, which comes from springs from an unknown source deep within the world of Nok. Using the Indigo Light to forge their weapons, Abin Sur and Natromo soon realised that when their enemies were cut with these weapons, they were momentarily overcome with remorse. Now freed from the invaders, Natromo taught Abin Sur about the Indigo Light. Together, they began to forge Indigo Power Rings and gave these rings to some of the worst criminals in the world, starting with Iroque, the killer who murdered Abin Sur’s daughter.

The Indigo Tribe’s Mission: Defeat the Guardians

Hal is shocked to hear that the Indigo Tribe is in fact made up of killers and sadists who needed redemption. Natromo then explains how the Indigo Tribe was actually created not to redeem people, but because Abin Sur had seen the future; that the Indigo Tribe were needed as an army during the Blackest Night. Hal informs Natromo that Blackest Night already happened, and so Natromo says that the next mission the Indigo Tribe were made for was to defeat the Guardians of the Universe who were going to end all the Corps. Natromo, says they will attack the Guardians once Abin Sur returns, but Hal Jordan informs Natromo that Abin Sur is dead. Natromo loses all hope, says that it is over and shuts down the Indigo Central Battery. Hal protests, saying that Natromo cannot do this. However, it is too late and once the Indigo Tribe find Hal, their Indigo Rings all of a sudden become off-line, and Sinestro and the rest of the Indigo Tribe are freed from their rings.

The off-line Indigo Tribe hunt down Hal Jordan and Sinestro, therefore Hal drags a confused Sinestro through the Forbidden Jungles to find Natromo. Hal calls out to Natromo and tells him to wait, but Natromo continues to run through the jungle. Sinestro asks Hal what is happening, and Hal explains what has just occurred. As Sinestro realises that he had been brainwashed by the Indigo Tribe, he says that he will neither forget what they did nor forgive them for trying to convert him into the Indigo Tribe. Hal stops Sinestro, saying he can do that after they put the Indigo Tribe back on-line. Sinestro demands that Hal releases him, claiming that he doesn’t need Hal Jordan’s help to get off the planet Nok. Hal is infuriated, yelling that if Sinestro didn’t need his help, why did he give him the Green Power Ring in the first place. As the two of them drive through the jungle in a car construct, Hal complains that he was ready to put his life back together and let the ring go until Sinestro pulled him into this mess once again. He also says that now that the Guardians are about to destroy the corps, he has to once again stop his normal life back on Earth. Sinestro replies that Hal is a Green Lantern, and that that is what his life is about.

Hal and Sinestro are so busy arguing that they almost crash into Natromo. Natromo tells Hal and Sinestro to leave him alone, saying that he wants to say goodbye to his family, and that with Abin Sur dead, the Guardians will destroy them all. Sinestro grows impatient, and threatens to kill Natromo if he doesn’t repair the Central Power Battery. Hal shouts at Sinestro, telling him that if Natromo already thinks he’s going to die, then threatening to kill him is not going to work. Sinestro complies, to Hal’s surprise, and tells Hal that he’ll hold the Tribe off while Hal and Natromo repair the lantern. While Sinestro fights the Tribe, Hal and Natromo journey to the Indigo Central Battery. On the way, Natromo tells Hal once again that only Abin Sur would be able to save them. Hal replies that he knows it’s hard to live up to Abin, and that Sinestro always reminded him of that. Natromo then asks how Hal Jordan new Abin Sur, and Hal tells him how he died on his planet and gave his Green Power Ring to Hal.

Next, Hal encourages Natromo to fix the lantern but Natromo cannot; he needs a spark of Indigo Light to restore the battery. Then, Iroque arrives at the cavern, begging Natromo to fix the battery, saying that the ring gave her compassion, showed her how much she hurt Abin Sur by killing his daughter. Hal Jordan asks her what she feels, and Iroque replies that she feels sadness. Suddenly, a spark of Indigo Light glows from her ring, and at last Natromo is able to restore the Central Power Battery. Finally the Indigo Tribe are back on-line and restored to their Indigo Power Rings; however, so is Sinestro. Hal demands the Indigo Tribe to let Sinestro go, saying that if they knew the true mission they were made for, they’d let him go. Then Hal turns to Natromo, asking him to free Sinestro, but Natromo replies that only the actual Indigo Tribe themselves can release him. Iroque says that they’ll release Sinestro if Hal believes that Sinestro can find redemption and become a hero without an Indigo Power Ring. Hal answers that he wants to believe it.

The Indigo Tribe restore Sinestro back to a Green Lantern and recharged both Hal and Sinestro’s rings. Hal also informs Sinestro that Natromo changed the bond between their two rings, meaning Hal can do whatever he wills the ring to do, including affecting Sinestro. While Hal enjoys blasting Sinestro, Sinestro complains, saying that while Hal stands there smiling, he has forgotten about a huge problem – Black Hand is missing. Hal, Sinestro and the Indigo Tribe then go searching for Black Hand, where they find blood on the rocks where he died. Sinestro complains again, telling Hal that he should’ve been worrying about Black Hand rather than focusing on freeing Sinestro. Hal replies that this isn’t about Sinestro; Black Hand must have jumped off the cliffs if his ring was off-line. Sinestro points out that Black Hand would rather die than stay a member of the Indigo Tribe. However, Hal notices that there is black slime on the rocks too, the same black slime that makes up Black Lanterns.

Iroque teleports Hal and Sinestro back to Korugar, Sinestro’s home planet and tells the two Green Lanterns that the Indigo Tribe will finish forging the rings with Natromo. She tells them that if the ring changed her, then the Guardians of the Universe could also be saved. Sinestro disagrees, saying that the Guardians are beyond saving. Sinestro threatens Iroque and her Tribe, saying that if they ever try to capture and convert Sinestro again, he’ll kill them all without hesitation. Iroque replies that when that time comes, it will be an interesting battle. On their way to Sinestro’s secret lair, Hal warns Sinestro not to threaten the Indigo Tribe, saying that they are on their side, to which Sinestro argues that the Tribe tried to kidnap and brainwash him. Sinestro reminds Hal that if they are ever in a situation like that again, Hal should worry about him second and Black Hand first. Hal then asks Sinestro why they have to move through the sewers, to which Sinestro replies that they must stay out of sight. Then, Hal and Sinestro argue wether the Guardians can be saved, and Hal says that there’s some good in them especially Ganthet. Sinestro and Hal agree, however, that Black Hand has no good in him.

Once they arrive at Sinestro’s underground lair, Sinestro says what Black Hand could be up to, saying that he could be on a mission to bring Nekron back, and that because of Hal’s sloppiness he’s on the loose. Hal protests, telling Sinestro he has no idea what he had to promise the Indigo Tribe to let him go. Sinestro replies that whatever Hal promised to release him was only so he could lead Hal to the Book of the Black. As Hal is amazed at how huge Sinestro’s lair is, he comes across a picture of Sinestro and Arin Sur. Sinestro blasts the picture with his ring, telling Hal that the past is the past and that they have to focus on the future. At last Sinestro finds the Book of the Black, and Hal asks how Sinestro got it. Sinestro answers that he recovered it from Lyssa Drak, and that when he touched the book he saw one of its prophecies, saying that after the Blackest Night, a great evil would rise up from within the Green Lantern Corps. Hal informs Sinestro that Natromo said that Abin Sur told him the same thing. Sinestro explains that the Guardians of the Universe are trying to replace them with a Third Army, and when Hal asks why, Sinestro opens the book to find out. The two Green Lanterns are overwhelmed by glimpses of prophecies where they see things like Simon Baz, Red Lanterns and the Guardians of the Universe. They are suddenly sucked into the book and teleported straight to Black Hand in his house, along with the book. Black Hand informs his undead family, who are with him at the dining table, that they have guests.

Black Hand informs Hal and Sinestro that now that Nekron is gone, the Book of the Black belongs to him, which is why the book was teleported there along with the two lanterns. When Black Hand opens a page in the Book of the Black, every page suddenly says: “Hal Jordan is not your enemy”. Black Hand and Sinestro ask Hal what he has done, to which Hal answers that he doesn’t know. Wasting no time, Hal blasts Black Hand in the head, frying every synapse in his brain in order to slow him down while they call for help. Hal informs Sinestro that to incinerate an undead Black Lantern, they need another colour from the Emotional Spectrum, and so they need Carol Ferris. When Hal tries to contact Carol, he can’t because Black Hand’s power ring was causing interference with the connection. When Hal and Sinestro head outside they are surrounded by hundreds of undead lanterns. However, the Black Lanterns aren’t moving, and Hal informs Sinestro that with Black Hand unconscious, they can’t do anything. Hal and Sinestro immediately start trying to burn the Black Lanterns, but they are soon awake and attacking Hal and Sinestro. Hal and Sinestro fly upwards, because without Black Power Rings, the undead lanterns cannot get them. Then, Sinestro has an idea and grabs his Yellow Power Battery from the pocket dimension it is tethered to. Hal and Sinestro blast the yellow lantern with every bit of willpower left in their rings, and at last the yellow lantern explodes in green and yellow light, wiping out all of the Black Lanterns except for Black Hand. As Black Hand stands over Hal’s and Sinestro’s unconscious bodies, he stares at the Book of the Black in disbelief; it says: “Hal Jordan will be the greatest Black Lantern”.

Hal Jordan wakes up in a coffin, having been buried alive by Black Hand. He manages to dig himself out, but then looks over to the next gravestone, which is labelled “Sinestro”, and hurries over there to try and dig Sinestro out. He fails to, as he is confronted by Black Hand once again. Hal asks Black Hand why he doesn’t just kill him, and Black Hand answers that he has no intention of killing him. Black Hand then threatens to raise Hal’s father, Martin Jordan, from the dead if Hal doesn’t leave Sinestro to die in the grave. Hal begs him not to, telling Black Hand that it wouldn’t really be his father. Black Hand starts to raise Martin Jordan from the dead, but Hal stops him just in time, smashing Black Hand’s eye into the corner of a grave stone. Black Hand attacks Hal, telling him that maybe the book was right; maybe Hal would be the greatest Black Lantern. As Black Hand is about to kill Hal, Sinestro attacks him, stabbing him in the neck with a spade and rescuing Hal. While on the run, Sinestro asks Hal how far his Green Lantern is, to which Hal answers that it is in Ferris Air, which is too far away. Hal then tells Sinestro to bash their rings together, saying that a spark of Green Energy is all they need to summon Sinestro’s power battery. They succeed and begin to attack Black Hand.

While fighting Black Hand, Hal complains at Sinestro, telling him that he shouldn’t unleash all his Green Energy on Black Hand, as it is destroying the cemetery and disrespecting the dead. Sinestro replies that stopping Black Hand requires more than clever constructs. Suddenly, a voice from Black Hand’s, Hal’s and Sinestro’s rings screams “LET ME OUT!” The three lanterns are confused, and Sinestro points out that the voice did not belong to the rings. The Guardians of the Universe become aware that Hal Jordan is once again a Green Lantern, fighting alongside Sinestro. As Hal is about to blast Black Hand, Ganthet appears and protects Black Hand from the blast. The Guardians charge Black Hand up and enhance his powers, which Black Hand then uses to blast Hal and Sinestro. The Green Power Rings begin to tell Hal and Sinestro that they are dying, and Hal and Sinestro know that if they are dying, then the ring needs to choose someone else. Sinestro wants it to choose someone like him, but Hal disagrees, telling Sinestro that his motivations are twisted. Hal and Sinestro have one chance to leave a message in their ring before they suddenly vanish. Their two rings fuse back into one and it flies off, stating that Hal Jordan and Sinestro are dead. As the ring flies through space looking for a replacement, it continues to say “error” over and over again.

Rise of the Third Army

During the beginning of the “Rise of the Third Army” story arc, Hal and Sinestro’s Green Power Ring finds Simon Baz, and it plays the message Hal and Sinestro sent before they vanished and were presumed dead. The message is unclear, and in it Hal and Sinestro explain briefly to Simon Baz why he was chosen, and that whatever he does, he should not go to Oa, because the Guardians will destroy him there. In the message Hal also tells Simon Baz to find Carol Ferris, but Sinestro tells him to find Arkillo, who still works for him. The message ends with Hal and Sinestro ordering Simon to release them and stop the Guardians.

Hal and Sinestro find themselves in the middle of nowhere, and up ahead Hal sees a mysterious figure in a cloak. The person calls out to Sinestro and tells Sinestro that he must pay for his crimes. Hal and Sinestro walk towards the person in the cloak, discussing amongst themselves what the decaying place they are in is. Hal asks Sinestro who the person is, as the person seems to know who Sinestro is. Sinestro replies that he does not know, and then demands answers from the mysterious figure. All the person answers is that he was a friend of Hal Jordan, but an enemy of Sinestro. He also informs Hal and Sinestro that they are in the Dead Zone, and that they are both deceased

Simon Baz, with the help of the Green Lantern B’dg, manages to untangle the two messages sent by Hal and Sinestro. In Hal’s message, a hologram of Hal tells Simon Baz that: he’ll be overwhelmed by the whole idea of the Green Lantern Corps, that he and Sinestro, thanks to Black Hand and the Guardians, have been teleported to a mysterious place and that if Hal dies, Simon should go to Carol Ferris in Coast City and tell her that Hal will love her more than anything – forever.

In the epilogue of the “Trial by Fire” issue, set in the Dead Zone, Hal tells the mysterious figure in the cloak that he and Sinestro will not trust him unless he reveals who he is and what situation they are in. The person reveals himself to be Tomar-Re, the first Green Lantern that Hal Jordan ever met. Finally, Tomar-Re tells Hal and Sinestro that the dead demand that they stop Volthoom, the First Lantern, before he unravels reality and changes Lantern history.

At the end of the series it was a book of the lanterns series in the OA space. A student wanted to know what happened to them after the events that occurred. After The First Lantern

In the aftermath of the war, Hal Jordan was busy with his life and crisis going on and clean up on Oa. Hal Jordan went to see his girlfriend and she wanted him to give her space from the tragic events that happened. Hal Jordan was evicted from his apartment and his life was going worse and finding a place to live. Hal Jordan got a call from his ring and was busy and left his girlfriend for time for herself. The new Guardians gave Hal Jordan some good news that he was not expecting at all. Hal Jordan was now put in charge of the Green Lantern army and became the new leader of the team. Hal Jordan was a little bit unorganized for the team about what to do and how to help out the team. All of a sudden a team of Orange Lanterns sent by Larfleeze attacked the Green Lantern army and Hal Jordan and Kilowog order all Green Lanterns to attack the Orange Lanterns and Larfleeze wanted what was his and he keep saying “this is mine now” and all of a sudden a group of little aliens who are now wearing a green Lantern ring wanted to go home and were not ready to go to war yet. Hal Jordan was in shock to see the young aliens wearing the Green Lantern ring.

Hal Jordan went to search for Nol-Anj, a Star Sapphire, he escaped the prison on Oa, killing Green Lantern Cossite of Sector 3119 in the process. Nol-Anj is angry because GL Gorin-Sunn separated her from her love, Clann. She was imprisoned for six years without trial. Recently, Jordan has went off to find Rayner and Ferris, who are battling Relic.

Lights Out

Relic and Hal JordanRelic and Hal Jordan
Relic and Hal Jordan

Relic has arrived to Oa. He is the only survivor of the universe before the DC Universe. Apparently, the previous lantern-ring wearers draw their power from a finite source. Once that source runs out, the universe ends and reforms with a new reservoir of energy. Relic’s goal is to rid the world of all the lantern rings, stopping at no cost. In the battle, Relic destroyed the Green Lantern Central Battery. Once destroyed, the planet Oa is set to die.

With power on their rings running out, Hal Jordan and the Green Lanterns seek help from Guy Gardner at the Red Lanterns.

Led by Hal, Guy, John Stewart, and Kyle Rayner they defeat Relic, who believes that the energy reservoir is the Source in the Source Wall. Kyle traps Relic into the Source Wall while replenishing the Source. Kyle is presumed dead and stuck in the wall while the Indigo-Tribe transport everyone to the new home for the Green Lanterns-Mogo.

Meanwhile, Kyle escapes from the Source wall and states that the emotional entities are dead and have filled up the energy reservoir.

The Guardians agree that no one should know of Kyle’s return.

Uprising

After the events of Lights Out and the events on the planet of The Braidmen led by Nol-Anj, the Durlans successfully deceived the universe, fooling them into believing that the Green Lantern Corp is a tyrant organization. With the green lanterns now hated, the Durlans team with the Braidmen and the Khunds to wage war against the corp. Hal and the corp convincingly defeat their enemies in the initial assault on Mogo. During the assault however, they discover that many of the corps’ member were Durlans in disguise.

John leads the mission to find and save the lanterns that were taken hostage and then imitated by the Durlans. With the hostage Green Lanterns saved and the initial assault on Mogo a loss for the invading forces, Nol-Anj and the Braidmen, as well as the Khund, abandon the Durlans. Nol-Anj strikes a deal with Hal, providing him information on the Durlans plans. It is discovered that the Durlans plan on shape shifting permanently into Daxamites, and creating an unstoppable army.

John leads a group of lanterns to warn the Daxamites of the Durlans plots, only to discover that the Durlans were already there first to give the lanterns a fight. The lanterns prevail, but learn that the only thing the Durlans are missing is a power source to fuel their Daxamite forms, a power they will steal from Gorin-Sunn‘s home planet, Zezzen, where all life forms are living energy. Hal leads the green lanterns to Zezzen, and with the help of the Nol-Anj and the Braidmen, executes a strategy that corners and defeats the Durlans.

When the Hal and the corp leave the planet, John is left with Fatality, who turns out to also be a Durlan in disguise that attacks the corp for one last time, but is ultimately defeated. With the Durlans out of the way, the lanterns continue their crusade to redeem their reputation across the universe.

God Head

A new crossover has began where Highfather is out of the Life Equation to defeat Darkseid. He first starts out to take one ring from each of the seven lantern corpses, and he succeeds. Highfather’s army is too powerful, so therefore Hal had to go to help from Black Hand, after failing against Orion. Combining the power of the seven lantern rings did not work, so Highfather instead captured Kyle Rayner, the wielder of the Life Equation. After tricking Kyle to give him the White Lantern ring, Highfather succeded in getting the Life Equation, and he actually succeded with the use of it. After asking Black Hand for help, he and Hal goes to the source wall, where Black Hand unleashes every dead being within the Source Wall. They use these beings as help, and the lantern corpses didn’t succed through force, but through showing Highfather that he isn’t any better than Darkseid. Highfather felt bad at this after looking at how New Genesis had been turned after their fight.

Renegade

After the events of God Head, the Green Lantern Corps was still under great scrutiny against the universe because a Durlan (shape shifting alien) disguised itself as Hal and told the universe about the Source Wall and that eventually they will cause the destruction of the universe. The Durlan also made them believe that the Green Lantern’s were tyrants as mentioned above. The new templar guardians sent Hal on a quick trip to Earth as a sort of vacation. Hal met up unintentionally with Guy Gardner and Barry Allen at a bar. The three got into a bar fight and thrown out. Hal yelled at the two for essentially butting into his life when he just wants to be alone. Carol Ferris comes to Hal and talks to him about her new relationship with Kyle Rayner. Hal says that he always thought it would be himself that Carol would end up with but he is still happy for them.

We also see that stones seem to be falling to some planets and turning everything to stone though there is nothing more than that. Hal goes to help out an alien planet that has a bit of trouble with some illegal mining going on and when the police of the planet came into space to deal with the criminals, they were stern with Hal telling him not to come near the planet. Hal hands over the criminals and tries to tell them that he isn’t the bad guy. Hal is summoned back to Mogo (OA) by the templar guardians. The guardians tell Hal that his job as corps leader went pretty well. However, the guardians also mention the terrible publicity that they are receiving because of Hal. They said that he is the public face of the corps and so the change must begin with him. Hal puts his lantern and and his father’s pilot jacket in his locker saying that he’s going to do something stupid.

Hal sits and eats with Kilowog stating that Kilowog is his family. Hal lets Kilowog in on his plan to renew the corps good name among the universe. Kilowog doesn’t think to highly of the plan but goes along with it knowing it is necessary. Later, the two put the plan into action. Hal breaks into the weapons facility to steal the Power Gauntlet that was originally owned by Krona. Kilowog and Hal fight in that room to stage that Hal is going AWOL. Hal holds back at first, not wanting to hurt his friend but Kilowog pushes him to use all of his power. Hal beats Kilowog to near death and then in a very emotional moment, Kilowog states with a smile that he let Hal win. Hal hugs Kilowog and then a few other Green Lanterns come in and try to stop Hal. Hal’s escape is quite easy with the power glove and when trying to leave the planet, Mogo attempts to use his gravity to keep Hal there but this proves ineffective because of the mass surge of spectrum energy that Hal pushed out when trying to fly away. The corps try to track his ring but realize that Hal left it on Mogo.

When we see Hal next, he is at some sort of illegal fighting arena between a huge beast and a scrawny alien royal named Virgo. Everyone bets on the prince to be killed but Hal uses his gauntlet to construct a blade on the prince’s hand that skewers the beast when it tried to attack the prince. The crowd is angered and the prince gets taken back to his cell. Hal shows up at the prince’s cell to rescue him from capture. A few alien gang members show up and try to stop Hal but in vain. The leader of these aliens, Trapper, whispers something to Hal, which startles Hal. So, he decides to take the leader with him. Hal escapes with his ship that has an A.I. named Darleen. Hal places the gang leader in a jail cell on the ship. He plans on bringing the prince back home but checks on Sector 0, otherwise known as the base of the Green Lantern Corps. He finds Mogo is missing along with the entire corps!

Hal is distraught to see that the corps that he loves so much is gone. However, he goes on his journey to return the prince, back to the man’s home planet. The prince even offers to have Hal come to his planet and become some sort of guard but Hal declines. He decides to take Trapper to be punished through Virgo’s judicial system since he and his team kidnapped the Virgo in the first place. When they arrive at the planet they are all taken aback to see that the entire planet has been turned to stone, even all of the people. At this moment, Trapper’s gang comes to take their leader back. Hal steps out of the ship and fights the aliens with hundreds of asteroids. The gang member’s ships take damage and so they surrender and decide to leave without Trapper. As they were going to leave, a big stone from the planet comes and smashes into the gang’s ship. Hal attempts to save them but is too late and witnesses the gang all turn to stone along with everything on the ship. He goes back into his ship and brings out Virgo tells the prince that because he is the last of his race, he can determine the punishment. After Virgo decides to spare Trapper, Hal decides to find out where the corps is and why planets are turning into stone.

Hal takes everyone to investigate the one place where has seen things turn to stone – the Source Wall. Once there, he removes his gauntlet, puts on a spacesuit he built during the journey, and leaves instructions for Virgo and Darlene. He then exits his ship to talk to the only person who can give him some answers – his old enemy Relic. Hoping Relic won’t recognize him, Hal explains the problem to him, and Relic reveals that there is a hole in the Wall. After trading ideas on how the two issues were connected, Relic talks about something he saw after being freed from the wall in Godhead. He speaks of a mentally unstable man dressed in black, who Hal secretly realizes is Black Hand. Before they talk further, Relic probe detect the green light in Hal’s gauntlet, as Virgo activated it when he tried to put it on. Realizing his time is up, Hal races back to the ship to assess the situation. Hal learns that Virgo’s act disabled the main thrusters. Hal recovers the gauntlet and fends off Relic’s drones until the thrusters are reactivated and they flee.

Powers and Abilities

Hal Jordan is a bearer of the Green Lantern Ring and one of the most powerful of the Corps. The abilities the ring grants him are:

  • Animating: A Green Lantern can will things to move how he wants.
  • Artificial Intelligence: Every ring has a connection to the Main Battery on Oa, which taps into an artificial intelligence. It acts as an “on-board computer,” telling the wearer what they need to know. It can either respond out loud, or silently directly to the wearer’s mind. The AI contains a large database of information that may be crucial to a Lantern’s success. The ring also translates nearly every language to and from the wearer (though they have difficulty translating profanity), which is why the Corps can communicate with each other. When the bearer of a Green Lantern ring dies, the ring will seek out a suitable replacement for their sector. The AI can be used to play a holographic playback sequence complete with colors across the spectrum based on information in memory banks. The ring can dictate when to pause or stop the playback should an interruption arise where the Lanterns undivided attention is needed. The AI can also alert the wielder of incoming threats or of attempts to manipulate the wielders construct by an outside party.
  • Burglar Alarm: A Green Lantern can coat anything with the ring’s beam and thus, if anyone other than himself touches it, his ring will glow, alerting him to the possible theft.
  • Communicator: The ring can act as a personal communicator between Green Lanterns. They have also been seen connected to telephones.
  • Costumes: The wearer of the ring may create any costume they choose, based on their personal preferences, whenever they choose. The ring projects the costume over any clothes already worn at the time. The only rules that the Guardians of the Universe implement on the creation of a individual costumed is that the ring bearer display the insignia of the Green Lantern Corps.
  • Energy Projection: The rings can also project beams, form protective bubbles and force fields, and fire destructive blasts. Sometimes, depending on the wearer, the beams and blasts make sounds. Kilowog‘s ring is one such example of blasts making sounds.
  • Energy Constructs: The rings can construct anything the wearer can imagine from hard-light energy, as long as they are willing to make it. The more determined the wearer is, the more complex and intricate these things can be. The constructs can even be so complex as to form working machines, computers, and even people. However, Hal is known for his relatively simple, straightforward constructs like his ever faithful boxing glove.
  • Flight: The ring allows the wearer to fly in atmosphere or in space, and can achieve incredible speeds, moving from planet to planet in a matter of hours.
  • Invisibility: The ring can make the wearer or anything else invisible.
  • Matter Manipulation: A Green Lantern can use their ring to manipulate nearby matter, such as water, for various purposes such as a construct that acts like an energy construct but can block something yellow and may serve a purpose that an energy construct couldn’t perform.
  • Mind Control: The wearer of the Ring can use it to plant post hypnotic commands or control a person.
  • Mirages: The Ring can create mirages/illusions.
  • Phasing: The ring allows the user to go through walls. This ability however required great concentration on the bearer of the ring
  • Power Absorbing: In the JLA’s first fight with Amazo, it was GL who defeated him by drawing out all of Amazo’s powers. In Green Lantern/ Silver Surfer: Unholy Alliances, Kyle defeated Parallax with SS’ power and Thanos with Oa’s energy by drawing out all that extra energy from them which made them unconscious. However he couldn’t hold all that power nor could his Ring like Hal did with Amazo’s powers, so that move isn’t often used with so much power.
  • Probing: The ring can probe the Lantern’s or another person’s mind, allowing him to uncover memories or the person’s thoughts. (An ability which has not been seen for some time)
  • Recharging: The rings need to be recharged by means of a Power Battery. Other large sources of power may be used to recharge a power ring, however effectiveness may vary. The internal power source of a Manhunter Android is, in effect, the same as a power battery, and can be used to recharge a power ring. During the JLA / Avengers crossover, a Cosmic Cube was used to recharge a depleted ring, although this is not an ideal solution and is available if there are no other options.
  • Ring Duplication: Each ring can duplicate itself, creating a second ring which may be given to another as a backup, for protection, or to help the lantern in times of great need. This duplicate ring is exactly like a normal ring.
  • Temperature Control: The Ring can increase or decrease the temperature of anything, even something as large as stars, or even create bubbles of intense heat or cold, even down to Absolute Zero. This could be seen in the recent Sinestro Corps War when Sallak used his ring to incase an enemy in a force bubble an incinerate him.
  • Transforming (former): The ring can transform anyone or anything, be it into an animal, altering their state of appearance, or their size. Once Hal and Alan turned the two Flashes (Barry and Jay) to light protons in order to free them from prisons.
  • Electro-magnetic scanning: The ring can allow(through the use of x rays) the user to see through walls, without the people on the other side knowing. it can also scan along the Electromagnetic spectrum.
  • Wormhole/Warps: The ring can open wormholes to cut down on distance.
  • Healing: A wielder can command a ring to heal him/her/itself of any injures incurred. It can also heal others. This ability however cannot regenerate lost limbs.
  • Energy twin: The ring can create an energy copy of the wielder which is connected to the ring wielder, any information the twin gathers is transferred to the wielder upon touch while others cannot see this twin apart from fellow Green Lanterns. (An ability which has not been seen for some time)
  • Pocket dimension: Within the ring is a pocket dimension which can altered to the wielders specification. It can be used to contain opponents.
  • Sub-routines: The power rings have inner programmings or mechanisms which can executed without the users permission. One such sub-routine is the autoshield. This shield automatically protects a wielder from external harm and has been proven to be capable of protecting the wielder from planetary level attacks.

Aviation: Even before becoming a Green Lantern, Hal Jordan was a very skilled pilot, just like his father was.

Leadership: Hal Jordan has proven to be a fantastic leader, usually assuming leadership of many Green Lanterns in battle.

Indomitable Will: Being a Green Lantern, Jordan has great willpower. He’s shown to never back down from a fight and always push through obstacles, making him one of the greatest Green Lanterns ever

Retconned

Radiation: Besides light based radiation used to create the energy constructs associated with a Green Lantern, the ring can simulate various forms of radiation. One example of this is the ability to simulate the radiation of Green Kryptonite, a form of radiation that is harmful to Superman. However, this ability is no longer valid and has been retconned.

Time travel: The ring allows the wielder the ability to travel through time, though the process requires great willpower.

Weaknesses

Mental Incapacitation: The ring cannot be wielded correctly if the wearer is under the influence of drugs or if there is an involvement of neural interference.

Yellow Impurity: In the beginning the Green Ring was vulnerable to the color yellow. It was unable to defend against attacks from wielders of the Sinestro Corps as well. This weakness however has now be changed and can be overcome by veterans who have the ability to overcome great fear. Hal Jordan was of the first of the Green Lanterns to show that this weakness could be overcome.

Hal pulling his ring out of a pocket dimension.Hal pulling his ring out of a pocket dimension.
Hal pulling his ring out of a pocket dimension.

Recharge: Previously had to be recharged every 24 hours or when it has been depleted of energy. This can be accomplished if the bearer of the ring recites an oath into his power lantern while holding the ring to it. However now, the power ring only needs to be recharged when it runs out of energy.

Red Lantern Corps. Bearers of the red ring have the ability to drain a Green Power Ring of its energy. The ring of a Blue Lantern however has the ability to charge a Green Lantern Ring or negate this negative effect. Blue Lanterns rings also have the ability to purge the negative effects that a Red Lanterns Ring can cause upon the wielder of a Green Lantern Ring.

(Previous Weaknesses)

Ability to Kill: One of the main weaknesses of the Power Rings that greatly disturbed Sinestro was the fact that the bearers of the Green Lantern Ring were unable to kill. Recently however, this restriction on the rings has been lifted but murder is still against the law of the Green Lantern Corps. This restriction was lifted by the Guardians of the Universe during the War of the Green Lanterns.

Alternate Versions

Parallel Earths

Earth-3

In the New 52, an alternate universe version of Hal Jordan appears from Earth-3 called Power Ring, who is apart of the Crime Syndicate (an evil version of the Justice League). This version is a complete opposite of Hal Jordan as he is a fearful, weak-willed, and cowardly person. This version of Hal wields the Ring of Volthoom which causes great pain to him as well as constantly harassing and berating him. Power Ring’s arm his sawed off by Sinestro, whom he thanks before being killed by him.

This is the reason why he survived as a prisoner of war. Hal was the one who leads one of Lex Luthor’s Super-Powered groups after the United States government found an Alien Weapon that belonged to the deceased Green Lantern Abin Sur. Some of the members last names included: Scott, Gardner, Stewart and Rayner, who happen to be the last names of five Green Lanterns for Space Sector 2814. This reality has been officially established as earth-30.

Countdown: Arena

Hal & Hal.Hal & Hal.
Hal & Hal.

In the mini-series Countdown: Arena, two alternate versions of Hal Jordan appeared: the Green Lantern from earth-5 (Captain Marvel’s Universe) and earth-12 Hal Jordan Jr., earth green Lantern (Batman Beyond universe). Captured by Monarch and forced to fight each other along with a third Green Lantern (Bruce Wayne), they however joined forces and went against Monarch. Their efforts were futile and they could not stand against the power of Monarch. Sadly, as result of their combined attack, only Hal Jordan jr from earth 12 survived after loss an arm and was forced to join to the Monarch’s Army.

Both versions were created exclusively for the miniseries and in both cases their existence contradicted the previous continuity of both universes. In the case of Hal Jordan jr. supposedly from the world of Batman Beyond, (where Kai-Ro is the earth’s Green Lantern), his existence is not cannon for the Beyond Universe.

Zack Snyder‘s planned Justice League trilogy was initially going to feature Hal Jordan in the third installment. The film would have opened with Hal crash landing on Earth after the planet had been taken over by Darkseid at the end of the second movie. Once there, Hal would have teamed up with Batman’s small band of surviving heroes (including Flash, Mera and Deadshot), before ultimately being killed by Superman (who had been corrupted by the Anti-Life Equation). Due to the critical and financial underperformance of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, the Justice League sequels were never produced, with Snyder’s story essentially concluding in Zack Snyder’s Justice League.

However, the Mars Mission fails due to a malfunction. Hal is horrified to discover there were weapons on the ship and that Rick knew. Hal still tries to save Rick, but fails. Rick perishes, but Hal is taken back to Earth by Superman. Sometime after this, Hal is chosen by Abin Sur as Green Lantern – Abin dies, but not before warning him of the Centre. Hal and his friend Ace participate in the final battle, distracting the Centre so the Flash can shrink it and it destroys itself. However, it is only when they are nearing death that Hal finally uses his ring and saves himself and Ace. When the dying Centre decides to take everyone near with him, Hal uses his power ring to send it into space. Hal then celebrates by finally living and dream and exploring space. In the epilogue, it is shown that Hal battles Starro alongside Barry, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and Martian Manhunter, and that he is a member of the Justice League. He is voiced by David Boreanaz.

Hal first appears in the film saving a woman from a parademon, before he crosses paths with Batman as the two are in Gotham City. The two then go into the sewers to escape the GCPD where Green Lantern is surprised to find out that Batman does not actually have any super powers. There they spot a parademon planting a mother box who proceeds to explode in the name of “Darkseid”. Hal gets his ring to scan the mother box for its origins but even the ring does not know. Batman concludes that the mother box is of alien origin, and they decide to look for Superman to possibly gain answers. The two arrive in Metropolis where they confront Superman, only to be thrown in a lopsided fight that is in favor of Superman. Batman stops the fight by calling out Superman as “Clark” and Superman recognizes Batman as Bruce Wayne. At this point, Darkseid’s invasion has begun and massive amounts of parademons emerge from boom tubes created from the mother boxes and the three begin to fight off the seemingly endless hordes. Flash also arrives to help and Hal greets Flash as they are seemingly already acquainted.

Wonder Woman, Shazam, and Cyborg also arrive only for Darkseid to finally make an appearance. Superman and Batman reappear and they all manage to put Darkseid back into the boom tube. Hal was voiced by Justin Kirk in this movie.

Batman gets aggravated because of Hal taking them out because Batman didn’t get the information he needed. They go back to S.T.A.R labs where the new Justice League headquarter is, and they go to investigate an incident where a submarine got taken out. There, Batman finds some clues, and Hal is given a task to try and find Atlantis with Flash, Wonder Woman, Shazam and Cyborg. When finding Aquaman, the Justice League finds Arthur fighting forces of the Trench. Hal helps out and takes out multiple trenches. Hal with Wonder Woman, Cyborg and Superman finds out that Arthur’s brother, Ocean Master, had killed Atlanna, and they try to put down Ocean Master, but gets put down instead. After Orm brings his army to the surface, Hal tries to fight him alongside the Justice League, but all of them fail, and Batman arrives and asks Hal for information. Hal tells Batman that Orm killed his mother, and Batman went to Cyborg for video of Orm saying it. Orm’s army lost trust in Orm after seeing that he confessed that he killed Atlanna. Orm’s army stopped battling, and instead turned their trust to Arthur. Nathan Fillion reprises his role.

In 2012, Bruce Timm, co-creator of the highly acclaimed DC Animated Universe, brought Hal Jordan, previously absent from the DCAU, to television, with Hal starring as the main character in a CGI-based animated series, voiced by Josh Keaton. The series is largely based on Hal and Kilowog (as well as other characters created for the Show) travelling through frontier space, battling various threats to the Green Lantern Corps, such as the Red Lanterns, the Manhunters and the Anti-Monitor. Despite critical acclaim and a loyal fanbase, the series was cancelled after only a single season on Cartoon Network. The show’s fate is often attributed to the broader failure of the live-action film.
