Origin
Clint Barton was born into an abusive family. He and his older brother Barney were the target of an abuse from their alcoholic father (Harold) and their mother (Edith) who didn’t care. Tragedy, or perhaps poetic justice, struck when both parents died in a car accident caused by Harold’s excessive drinking.
Soon after the accident, Clint and Barney were put into an orphanage. The two escaped, dreaming of a better life. While on the run, the two fell in the company of a traveling circus. Needing food and shelter, Clint and Barney decided to do odd jobs for the performers.
Two performers, Swordsman and Trickshot, saw potential in Clint and took him under their wing. Trickshot taught Clint archery while Swordsman taught Clint acrobatics and knife throwing. The duo became heroes to Clint as he began to surpass his masters. Though Swordsman and Trickshot weren’t the greatest father figures, they were the best the circus had to offer, or so he thought. While doing an odd job for a performer, Clint overheard that a great sum of money had been stolen from the ringmaster the night before. Clint thought little of this until he saw Swordsman with a very large amount of money. He wondered if his hero could have been the thief from the night before. He questioned his mentor and got the answer he was dreading; Swordsman had indeed stolen the money. Swordsman was quick to offer Clint a cut of the stolen cash if he kept his mouth shut, but he refused and was soon chased, beaten, and left for dead by Swordsman. Unable to handle the pain he felt, Clint bolted again. Disappointed that Clint left the circus and angry that he was alone, Barney lashed out at his brother. Feeling guilty for leaving his brother, Clint reluctantly agreed to return to his old life.
Clint felt unappreciated and alone at the circus. His act “The Amazing Hawkeye” got little attendance. Much to his dismay, his performance was ignored when Iron Man stopped a runaway ride. After seeing Iron Man in action, Clint was inspired to use his archery skills to fight crime.
Creation
Hawkeye was created by Stan Lee and Don Heck. He first appeared in Tales Of Suspense #57 as a reluctant villain, until he eventually changed sides and joined the Avengers.
Character Evolution
Over the years, Hawkeye has remained a mainstay of the Avengers and has proved to be a favorite among fans and creators alike. Starting out as a B-list Iron Man villain, Hawkeye became cemented in Avengers lore when the hotheaded bowman was selected to join a version of the Avengers affectionately known as “Cap’s Kooky Quartet.”
Over the years, Hawkeye has been through several major developments such as adopting the Goliath identity, eloping with Mockingbird, leading his own team of Avengers, leading a team of reformed super-villains, and dying at the hands of one of his friends. Whether he is acting as Hawkeye, Goliath or Ronin; one thing remains the same: Clint Barton is ready to answer the call of “Avengers Assemble!”.
Major Story Arcs
A Brief Life of Crime
Hawkeye’s first outing was a major failure; after taking down two jewel thieves, the police arriving on the scene thought him to be the thief. Clint evaded capture, feeling defeated, misunderstood and hurt. He soon ran into the Black Widow, a soviet super-spy, and the two became inseparable. Clint didn’t know what he was involved in, but the Widow had convinced him that he needed to defeat Iron Man in order to show his true power to the world.
He soon wised up to the Black Widow’s game and decided he wasn’t going to be her distraction for Iron Man any longer, and that he would try his hand at the hero game once more.
The Butler & the Avengers
Clint begins fighting crime in slum-like conditions. One night, Clint saves Edward Jarvis and his mother from a gang of thugs, who were robbing them at gun point. Jarvis convinces Clint to allow him to buy his hero a meal, and after they get to know each other, tells Clint that he would make a fine addition to Earths Mightiest Heroes, the Avengers. Jarvis and Clint set-up a show for the original Avengers. Clint ties Jarvis up and the Avengers arrive. Clint then shows his skill by shooting the ropes off of Jarvis. After a discussion, the team accepts Clint as a new member. Just like he and Jarvis planned.
Shield-Slinging Leader
Feeling good about being an Avenger but constantly bickering with the other members (Captain America, Quicksilver, and the lovely Scarlet Witch), Clint thinks he’d make a better leader than the “old warhorse” Captain America and would continuously challenge Cap’s orders. Eventually, Clint would gain respect for Cap and the two would become close friends throughout the years. After Clint left the Black Widow, she began to question her loyalty to her communist bosses. They would kidnap and brainwash her. They gave her one order and that was to destroy the Avengers. So the Widow hires the Swordsman and Power Man to do just that. They are quickly stopped by Hank Pym in his Goliath persona. All three managed to escape. Captain America decides to split the team up to search for the Black Widow and her allies. After locating them, Clint asks Cap’s permission to take the trio on by himself. Cap grants his request. Clint takes on the trio by defeating the Swordsman and then going up against Power Man. Yet Power Man gains the upper hand and has Clint in a bear-hug, but Power Man is shot from behind by none other than the Black Widow. She explains to Clint about her brainwashing, and Clint assures her that he will take care of the Avengers and Shield.
Marksman No More
Clint started to feel like the weakest link on the team, not to mention that he and the Widow were always off on separate missions. He with the Avengers and her with Shield. Then one day, Hank Pym gathered the team and told them that he’s giving up on the Goliath persona and switching to Yellowjacket permanently. Clint began to think of the possibilities, when a distress signal came in and he finds out that the Widow was in trouble with an over-grown monster robot.
This robot was part of a scheme by Egghead, Mad Thinker, and the Puppet Master. Knowing the only way to save the woman that he loves was to take Pym’s growth serum, Clint decides to become Goliath. Clint saves the day and the girl. Hank Pym approves of Clint being the new Goliath.
Surprise Visitor
Jarvis escorts Barney Barton a well known rackets-man to the Avengers conference center where they are discussing the threat of Eggheads Space Station Death Ray. Barney announces that he has dire information about the Space Stations location. The Avengers and Barney Barton storm the Station only to be bombarded with Eggbots. Egghead uses the Puppet Master’s radioactive dolls of the Avengers, that were made in their last alliance together. Barney was the only one that wasn’t affected and hurls his body against the Death Ray. Barney saved the day, but at great cost to himself. Barney Barton gave his life to save the Avengers and the world from the evil genius Egghead with his twisted plans of greed. Poor Barney died in Clint’s arms. At this point, Clint reveals his real name and brief origin to his other teammates. Egghead disgusted over what happened with his Death Ray, blames Hank Pym ( Who he thinks is still Goliath) for his failures through the years. So he hires the Swordsman to bring Pym to him, and the Swordsman does just that. Only that Goliath is now Clint Barton. After a brief scuffle with Egghead and the Swordsman, Clint breaks it up. Both criminals are brought to justice. Sometime later, the Black Widow dumps Clint so she can spend more time as an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.
The Skrulls
Clint receives a distress signal from the Wasp. Clint embarks and flies a quinjet to a remote island in the Arctic Circle. Except that this island is hot and looks like the amazon. While there, Clint fights a Kree-Sentry, and becomes hypnotized by Ronan, the Accuser. The rest of the Avengers arrive along with Captain Mar-Vell. Clint is forced to attack his friends. Ronan has plans to bring Earth and its inhabitants back to the prehistoric age. Captain Mar-Vell and the rest of the Avengers put a stop to him. Upon their return, the Alien Activities Commission demands the Avengers hand over Captain Mar-Vell to them. The Avengers refuse and tell Mar-Vell to go into hiding. The Commission accuses the Avengers of treason. The main core Avengers show up and disband the team. They end-up being Skrulls in disguise. Finding out that the rest of his teammates and Captain Mar-Vell have been captured by the Skrulls, Clint and Rick Jones are trying to talk their way out of a sticky situation with the remaining Skrulls. But, just in the nick of time, Thor, Captain America, Vision and Iron Man show up to rescue them. After a brief set-back with the Inhumans, Clint and the rest of the Avengers head for space. The Avengers attack a Skrull Mothership and find out about a plan to raze the entire planet Earth. Captain America sends Clint on a life and death mission to do whatever it takes to stop the Skrull ship from completing its mission. Clint manages to catch up to the Skrull ship and board it. Clint, who has no more growth serum, uses nothing but his wits and his guts to stop the Skrulls from completing their mission. This required going back to being an archer. Clint managed to destroy the ship and to get on an escape shuttle, but crashes down to Earth.
Not You, But Him
While back in the fold, Clint gets a new costume but stays as an archer. Clint also starts to have some feelings for the Scarlet Witch. These feelings are not returned due to her feelings for the Vision. Frustrated about the Scarlet Witch and being an Avenger, Clint puts on his old costume and leaves the team. Only to be approached by an extremely tall gentleman named Imus Champion. This gentleman asks Clint to train him to become an expert with the bow and arrow and he will get paid very well for his time. Clint agrees, but discovers Champion’s evil plan to bomb the San Francisco Fault-Line. The Avengers show up to help Clint put a stop to Champion. Clint then goes on leave again.
He goes to the Black Widow’s apartment in an attempt to rekindle their relationship, but finds her with her new partner Daredevil. Which leads to Hawkeye and Daredevil coming to blows. The Avengers show up again to plead with Clint about rejoining their ranks, but he refuses.
Time Traveler
Hawkeye then drifts for a time, until Kang the Conqueror traps him in the past. Kang wanted to lure the rest of the Avengers to set a trap in Limbo. Clint is in the year 1873, and has befriended other heroes of that time against Kang. Such new friends as the Two-Gun Kid and Kid Colt. When Thor, Moondragon, and Immortus arrive to help in taking down Kang. The Two-Gun Kid request to come back to the future with the Avengers. Hawkeye and Two-Gun embark on a wide scale of adventures in the modern west. While traveling with horses, Clint and the Two-Gun Kid fall into a underground headquarters of Purple Man. Before our heroes can act, Purple Man makes Clint fight his new friend. After a knock-out punch by Two-Gun Clint comes to his senses and both men put a quick stop to Purple Man’s mind controlling by using a explosive arrow.
While in the desert, Clint and the Two-Gun Kid help the Ghost Rider defeat the villain Manticore. Then the Champions appear and Clint and Two-Gun aid them against Warlord Kaa and his men. However suddenly, the Two-Gun Kid disappears and vanishes from Clint’s side. Clint makes contact and returns to the Avengers to assist them, when he learns that other members of the team also begin to mysteriously disappear just like the Two-Gun Kid. The only remaining Avengers are Thor, Iron Man, Wasp and Clint. Together, they discover it was the work of the Collector, one of the Elders of the Universe. It seems that the Collector had been collecting the Avengers to help aid him against a coming threat. After the others are all captured, Clint single-handily defeats the Collector where not even the Thunder God could not. This would lead into the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy facing off against Korvac. At the conclusion, the Two-Gun Kid decides to use the Collector’s time machine and return to his own time period.
Falcon, What Falcon?!
Both teams are back at the Avengers Mansion when government liaison Henry Gyrich limits their roster and decides “No” on Clint, but allows the Falcon as a member. Gyrich wanted a more “politically acceptable” body. Clint couldn’t find work in his civilian identity, however he successfully applies for work at Cross Technological Enterprises as head of security. While employed he has a run-in with the Shi’ar villain Deathbird. Which ends with a most memorable kiss. Clint then helps the Avengers face-off against Red Ronin, Marcus/ Scarlet Centurion, and Ultron.
Once An Avenger…
Moondragon calls out to all possible recruits for her alone to make the decision on who will be a Avenger for replacing some departing members. Well everyone except Moondragon took this personally. Clint departs soon after, but after couple months Captain America and Iron Man ask him to rejoin their ranks. He gladly accepts and pulls double duty as an Avenger and his job at Cross Technologies.
Clint as a member had several run-ins with new member the She-Hulk. The two constantly bicker with each other. As an Avenger, Clint receives a letter from the daughter of the circus that once employed him as a performer. Clint investigates and joins forces with the new Ant-Man to stop the Taskmaster for using the circus as a front for his criminal training school. It is also at this time that Clint finally avenges the death of his brother.
The villain Egghead reemerges, and having been exposed for framing Henry Pym who has fallen from grace. Pym who ends-up defeating Egghead’s Masters of Evil by himself , Egghead then attempts to shoot Pym as the final act of revenge while his back was turned, but Clint jams the barrel of the weapon with an arrow. The weapon is an energy pistol and explodes, killing Egghead instantly.
Another Spy, Babe
Clint then meets former S.H.I.E.L.D agent Barbara “Bobbi” Morse, code-named Mockingbird formerly known as Huntress, who is investigating the company Cross Technological Enterprises, which Clint is still employed for. She talks him into helping her investigate the company., They find-out that it is owned by the villain Crossfire. Crossfire who plans to use an aggression-inducing sonic wave against all of New York’s superheroes to battle each other in hopes to get rid of all of them.
Clint and Mockingbird infiltrates Cross Technological Enterprises to defeat Crossfire, before his plans are furnished. During this Clint has a throw down with Crossfire, he then puts one of his sonic arrows into his mouth to counter the effects of Crossfire’s sonic weapon, this results him into suffering major hearing loss and is forced to wear hearing aids. Hawkeye and Mockingbird fall in love with each other and elope immediately after from only knowing each other for six weeks.
Leader Man
At the direction of then Avengers chairman Vision, Hawkeye and Mockingbird help establish an off branch team called the West Coast Avengers. Clint then encounters and battles his old mentor, Trickshot, who Clint later learned that he had just wanted Clint to kill him in battle, because he was dying of cancer, but he refuses to do so.
During “an adventure through time saga”, this adventure brings major changes for Clint and fellow wacko team-mates. Hawkeye forges the weapons that the modern hero Moon Knight will eventually use, and his wife Mockingbird is forced to love the Old Western hero the Phantom Rider who uses a love potion and eventually rapes her. After, the Two-Gun Kid and Rawhide Kid help her clear her mind, she allows the Phantom Rider to fall to his death. When Hawkeye discovers this act (through machinations of the ghost of Phantom Rider), he breaks off their marriage.
Clint later encounters Trickshot once more, as Crossfire puts a bounty on his arm. So some villains arrive to claim the bounty. With help from Trickshot and his then-separated wife Mockingbird, he defeats Crossfire. During this time, Clint has a couple of run-ins with government-forced Avenger U.S. Agent and quits the Avengers West Coast and reconciles with Mockingbird. While reading the paper about some new minor heroes, he and Mockingbird would meet and train these heroes to form the Great Lakes Avengers.
A Robot Wife & the Kree/Shi’ar War
Ultron returns and kidnaps Mockingbird and copies her brain patterns to create a “wife” for himself called Alkhema (also known as “War Toy”). Clint once again drinks Pym’s growth serum and helps the West Coast Avengers save Mockingbird. Both are members again with the West Coast branch. Then, the Kree and Shi’ar have a war about territory and the Avengers get involved. Initially, U.S. Agent was one of the Avengers selected to go out in space to stop the conflict while Hawkeye was selected to stay with the “Earth Force”. Incensed with the decision, Clint felt his experience was enough to allow him to go out in space. He then runs into Hank Pym, who offers his help by reminding Clint of his growth serum. After ingesting the growth serum and having Pym run some tests on him, Clint is able to sway Captain America’s decision and is allowed to go out in space. While an incensed U.S. Agent is then bumped on to the “Earth Force”.
Onslaught
In a major battle with Santish and Mephisto, Mockingbird is killed while saving Clint’s life. Embittered by Mockingbird’s death, He leaves the team (they disbanded almost immediately afterward) and drifts awhile. Clint then encounters and is forced to stop the villain Viper and his old mentor Trick Shot.
Clint then returns to the Avengers just in time for the Crossing saga and to the battle with the entity known as Onslaught. Clint, along with the Avengers, are apparently killed. However Franklin Richards, transported them all to a pocket dimension where the heroes led altered lives.
Return to Earth 616
After several months, the heroes would learn the truth and are returned to the mainstream universe. Clint’s hearing was fully restored as well. The reason for this was because when Franklin Richards re-created the heroes in the new universe, he based them on how he remembered each of them. Hawkeye then rejoined the Avengers and, after several adventures, resigned to take another leadership role. This time for the first generation of the Thunderbolts, whom had seemingly broken away from the influence of Baron Helmut Zemo.
Leading the Thunderbolts
After Hawkeye left the Avengers, he infiltrated the team of criminals-turned-heroes named the Thunderbolts. Hawkeye wanted to know if the rumors of their change of heart was really true. If so, he wanted to help the Thunderbolts in their quest for redemption. At first reluctant, the team evenutally accepted him and he once more accepted a leadership role for the first generation of the Thunderbolts, whom had broken from the influence of Baron Helmut Zemo. Hawkeye trains the team in the fashion of former teammate and good friend Captain America. He shapes the team into a major fighting force. There are two significant events for Hawkeye during this period. Clint and the Thunderbolts enter Hell and battle the demon Mephisto to try and save the soul of his deceased wife, Mockingbird. Clint instead, rescues Patsy Walker, but fails to see Mockingbird. Clint gets some closure from this, and he begins a romantic relationship with his Thunderbolt teammate, Moonstone. Clint eventually leaves the Thunderbolts in order for the team to get a full amnesty for their crimes. In order to do this however, Clint would be prosecuted for helping and aiding fugitives from the law. Clint accepts his plight, in hopes of showing his Thunderbolt teammates that he truly believes in them. He leaves the Thunderbolts leadership to Captain America. After the charges are dropped for Clint, he eventually joins the Avengers again.
Back with the Avengers & Death
While back being an Avenger, Clint has a brief romantic relationship with fellow team member the Wasp. In which Hank Pym, who is a close friend to Clint and has an off-again and on-again relationship with the Wasp, discovers the two having this affair and then ran off. Clint along with the other Avengers then had to deal with the chaos brought by the breakdown of the Scarlet Witch. The chaos being: the supposed death of Scott Lang/Ant Man, Vision crashing into the Avengers mansion to warn of Ultron and then She Hulk hulking out on the team and almost killing Captain America, despite the efforts of Clint to try and calm her down. After the Kree squadron showed up and tried to invade earth, Clint fights the invasion with the other Avengers but is eventually hit in the back with a blast from a gun which makes him severely injured. But even after that, with his dying breath and using his boldness, sacrifices himself to destroy a Kree spaceship and save his teammates by blasting into the ship with a Kree warrior’s jet pack.
House of “M”
When the Scarlet Witch inadvertently alters reality, Hawkeye is resurrected with no memory of previous events that happened. During this time, Clint joins a Human Resistance group operated by Luke Cage and he is once again married to Mockingbird. When a young mutant named Layla Miller gives Clint and several heroes the ability to remember, he is horrified at the Scarlet Witch for her actions. Clint then hunts her down despite everyone’s warnings and shoots Wanda in the back with an arrow, asking her why she had killed him and carried out all her other tragic deeds. In retaliation, one of her recreated children wipes Clint from existence. When the Scarlet Witch’s altered reality is eventually undone, Clint is still presumed dead and the recently formed New Avengers find his bow and arrows on the site of the old Avengers Mansion, pinning up an article about his death. Clint is later plucked from time by the Time Variance Authority to serve as a juror in a case involving former Avengers teammate She-Hulk. She-Hulk tries unsuccessfully to warn Clint about his future.
New Avengers
Unknown to the New Avengers, Hawkeye was resurrected once all reality was restored, and seeks out Dr. Strange. Strange offers Clint shelter while he comes to terms with his new life. On the advice of Dr. Strange, Clint travels to Wundagore Mountain and finds the Scarlet Witch living a normal life with no memory of her past and apparently without her mutant abilities. The two become intimate, and he then leaves Wanda to live her normal life.
Once Clint discovers that Captain America has been apparently been killed after the Civil War, he confronts Tony Stark, who then offers him Captain America’s shield and costume. As Iron Man, Stark accompanies Barton who is now dressed as Captain America and the both go on patrol. The two meet the new Hawkeye, Kate Bishop, defeating the supervillain Firebrand. Barton confronts Bishop about her assumption of the Hawkeye mantle. Unaware of his true identity, Bishop tells Clint and that she adopted Hawkeye’s name to honor him, and that if Hawkeye were alive, she would adopt another name. She also affirms that the “real” Captain America gave her the name Hawkeye and his old bow as a tribute to his dead friends death with honor. Bishop’s words convinces Clint to return the shield and costume to Stark, and condemns Stark for his role in the Civil War. Clint returns to speak with Dr. Strange to discover the New Avengers. Going on a mission he puts on a new costume and to protect himself from recognition and adopts the identity of Ronin. As Ronin, The team goes to Japan to rescue the heroine Echo. Echo, who is the original Ronin, gives Clint her blessing to adopt her old identity. The pair later begin a brief a relationship.
Secret Invasion
After an alien Skrull ship crashes in the Savage Land, Clint battles and kills a Skrull impersonating Mockingbird and himself. He is later reunited with the real Mockingbird during a final battle with the Skrulls. And though the two fought about their past at first, they eventually started their relationship once more
Dark Reign
While Clint and his wife join up with the New Avengers to search for Luke Cage’s daughter, Norman Osborn forms the Dark Avengers with villains assuming the identities of fugitive heroes; Bullseye assumes the identity of Hawkeye. Clint is very much infuriated that those who would exploit their good names take advantage of the invasion. He doesn’t even want to wait for the Dark Avengers to show their true colors and wants to fight them immediately. After a failed attempt to lure the Dark Avengers into a battle turns instead into a fight with the Hood’s crime syndicate, Clint goes on television, unmasked, and publicly denounces the Dark Avengers, stating that Osborn has formed an alliance with the Hood, and urging people to fight against his new regime. When Norman Osborn declares war on the X-Men that reside in Utopia; Clint remarks to the other New Avengers that he is going to kill Norman. With no one backing him Clint assaults Avenger Tower on his own; only to fail and get arrested by Osborn. Eventually Clint is freed by his fellow team-mates, but not before being tortured by Osborn.
Heroic Age
Soon, Norman Osborn finally breaks down and attacks Asgard. Captain America, along with the rest of the Avengers, goes to assist Thor and the Asgardians as Sentry destroys the city. After the Sentry’s death at the hands of Thor, Captain Rogers is given permission to form a new team of Avengers and he chooses Clint who has returned to his Hawkeye persona.
In an attempt to get their relationship back together and find out where they stand, Hawkeye and Mockingbird have also started dating. Mockingbird has re-organised her W.C.A. (World Counter-terrorism Agency), and Clint is currently helping the W.C.A. track down Crossfire with Mockingbird. After Catching Crossfire, Bobbi and Clint’s relationship broke off. Clint was not happy with the way Bobbi was acting towards criminals.
Later Clint goes to the jail where Crossfire was held and watched him not saying a word. Crossfire then proceeded to tease Clint saying they were two sides of the same coin. After leaving his arch-enemy to sit in prison he leaves only to be confronted by Steve Rogers where he reassures Clint on why he is a hero and why he is who he is. After the heart to heart talk from his mentor and best friend Steve received intel that some one is hunting down spies all over the world and Mockingbird was one of the targets.
Widowmaker
Clint starts in investigation into the Dark Ocean Society after the assassination of a Japanese SHIELD agent. His investigation with Mockingbird and Dominic Fortune leads them to Russia, where they cross paths with Black Widow. She was investigating the deaths of a number of KGB operatives from the Red Room. The two plots are somehow related, but what really gets Clint’s attention is the assassin Black Widow was tracking was using his old Ronin uniform.
Their combined investigations bring them to the Kuril Islands, famously disputed territory fought over by Russia and Japan. The new Ronin reveals himself as Alexei Shostakov, former Red Guardian and ex-husband of Black Widow. His intention was to start war between Russia and Japan that would return Russia to its former glory. Clint and his allies are forced to defeat Alexei as well as members of the Dark Ocean Society and the Supreme Soviets.
Blindspot
After the events of WidowMaker, Clint tries to get back to normal with the Avengers. When they find Absorbing Man , Grey Gargoyle , Tiger Shark robbing a armored car Hawkeye takes a shot and misses. Later Clint sits down with Steve Rogers , Donald Blake and Tony Stark who tell him that he developed a tumor in the visual part of his brain from the battle in Japan. Tony then makes Clint a new cowl and glasses to help with his sight and to improve his auditory receptors.
After having a coffee he sees on the screen Trickshot his old mentor beaten to almost death falling at the entrance to the Avengers Tower. Then Trickshot tells Hawkeye in his dying breath that he was forced to train a new Trickshot by a Benefactor of the new apprentice. Angry Hawkeye test out this new gear out in the field with some thugs. There Steve Rogers confronts him an tells him to head back Avengers Tower as his condition is getting worse and that his gear was never field tested. Clint gets into a scuffle with Steve and after Hawkeye uses some of the moves that Steve taught him on Steve he high tales it out of there looking for more thugs. At that time Hawkeye meets up with the new Trickshot who turns out to be is thought to be dead brother Barney Barton . Barney leads Hawkeye to and old fair ground resembling the fair grounds that they were raised in as kids. There Hawkeye finds out that his brothers benefactor is Baron Zemo and that everything after Siege was a revenge plot by Baron Zemo to get back at Hawkeye for ruining his plan to unite the world with Moonstone’s moonstones and ruining Karla’s mind and love to Baron Zemo. At this point Hawkeye has gone completely blind and has to defend himself against Zemo and his Brother. He then remembers his training and begins to use his hearing to defeat both Zemo and his brother. Zemo escapes but Barney stays and still gives Hawkeye a good beating. Just then Steve, Iron Man and Thor bust in and save they day.
Later on Clint comes out of surgery and with some old Pym particles that were still in his system they shrunk his tumor. Blood was given from his brother. After Clint thanks Barney but Barney tells him that it doesn’t change things between them, That he would reach no end to get Hawkeye back for what he did to him.
Fear Itself
During this time the Avengers were spread thin with Sin and her forces attacking and the rest of the Serpents “Worthy’s”. Hawkeye joins Ms. Marvel and Spider Woman in South America where they tangle with the Hulk. Hawkeye saves Spider Woman, she thanks him and they share a moment together. After dealing with Hulk, Tony Stark appears and gives Hawkeye and some others powerful weapons to help defeat the “Worthy”. After a massive battle the Avengers come out victorious.
Secret Avengers
Captain America asks Hawkeye to join him on a covert mission in Bagalia where Cap wants to test Hawkeye’s abilities to lead. There Cap slaps him the face with a few comments about how he see’s Steve as a father that he looks up to. Hawkeye is not having any of that, leaves Captain America to finish the mission himself. After Captain America get captured by Whiplash, Vengence and Princess Python. Hawkeye saves Captain America and finds out that it was all a test to lead the Secret Avengers. The Secret Avengers ended up discovering a secret city of these robots called the Core. The team ended up getting split and Hawkeye and Beast ended up getting capture, only to be freed with the aid of Ant-Man, who they thought was killed. After saving the child and regrouping, the Secret Avengers teleport out of the Core, but Jim Hammond’s body gets destroyed as he is stabbed during their escape from the Core. Hawkeye tells the members of his team not to let any word of what happened in their first mission get out to anyone.
Clint leaves the team after one of their missions goes south, but he game back to the team to help Black Widow and Spider Woman to help rescue Nick Fury Jr. and Phil Coulson.
Avengers vs. X-Men
Hawkeye is part of the Avengers team that Captain America brings with him to Utopia to take on the X-Men.
Marvel Now
As part of the Marvel Now relaunch, we take in Clint’s world when he’s not with the Avengers. After recovering from an injury during a mission, Clint arrives to his apartment to find out that his landlord, Ivan, is tripling the rent and evicting those who cannot pay. Clint goes and meets Ivan at his hideout and offers to pay the rent for everyone in the building. Ivan refuses and has the Tracksuit Mafia attack Clint. The fight spills onto the street. One of the goon’s dogs stops him from shooting Clint, and the dog gets thrown into traffic. Clint is able to save the dog and decided to keep him, naming the dog Lucky. Clint buys the building from Ivan using a small fortune Clint got from his brother, thus becoming the new landlord.
Kate Bishop agrees to be Clint’s partner, while he does some non-Avenger superheroics based out of his new apartment. They go after the Circus of Crime, with Swordsman’s new protege, as they try to rob the rich elite of NYC. Unfortunately, all the elites that Ringmaster hypnotized happen to gain consciousness just in time to think Clint was the guilty party. Under orders from SHIELD, the two recover a stolen tape with incriminating footage of Hawkeye from a supervillain auction. The tape turned out to be a fake to flush out a mole in SHIELD, but the whole retrieval operation put the two Hawkeyes on Madame Masque’s bad side.
It was bad enough that Clint took their apartment building and got their landlord deported. Clint also got involved with a mafia wife who was making a run for it. He bought her husband’s cherry muscle car from her and got her on a plane. But she comes right back to Clint the next time she has a problem, only this problem is a lot bigger than a car. She shot her husband, and now the whole gang is looking for her. She needs a big score, so Clint agrees to help her get a safe from the Tracksuits. Instead, he got arrested, and she left the safe she couldn’t crack in his apartment. With all the criminal elements of NYC pissed at Hawkeye, it was easy for the Tracksuit Mafia guys to negotiate an exclusive hit on him.
The Tracksuit Mafia flew in a contractor, The Clown. Instead of killing Clint, he got in Kate’s head and killed one of Clint’s tenants. The stress Clint is under pushes Kate away, who looks to the west coast for a change of scenery (taking Lucky with her). Clint’s still got company though. His brother, Barney, shows up unannounced looking for a place to crash. The Clown found out Clint never properly bought the building and was essentially squatting, so he sent the tracksuits to terrorize some of the residents, When the Barton boys ran them off yet again, The Clown made his move. He put Barney into a wheelchair and deafened Clint. The Barton boys refuse to give up though. They round up the residents to work together and protect their home. Both groups had each other on the ropes until Kate and Lucky show up after their adventures in LA. They win the day, but Barney ran off with the rest of Clint’s money stash.
Vs. Deadpool
One Halloween, Hawkeye is visited by trick or treaters, including Deadpool and his daughter Ellie. A hacker, who earlier tried giving Clint a thumb drive, is killed in the street. Hawkeye and Deadpool both try to stop the shooter, but he jumped in front of a truck rather than be taken alive. Deadpool finds the thumb drive in his candy bag. It has a video of the hacker claiming to have stolen a SHIELD active agents list, and Clint and Deadpool start fighting over who is best suited to track it down before the hacker’s killers do.
Eventually their fight is broken up by Kate, and the two decide to work together after all. Following leads, they end up at a psychiatric hospital where patients are being brain-washed into killers for the new kingpin, Black Cat. Clint and Wade try fighting off all the patients, but there was too many. And Cat got away. The two go their separate ways to recharge, only for Clint to get ambushed and brainwashed into a sleeper agent.
The next day, Kate searches social media and finds a picture of the hacker with his cat, which was not at the apartment when they searched it earlier. When the trio finally tracked it down, it had yet another thumb drive on its collar. Unfortunately, Clint’s secret reprogramming takes over. He knocks out his two partners and makes off with the drive.
Clint delivers the drive to Cat, but as Cat tries to upload it, Kate takes out an electrical substation with an RPG. The blast stops Cat from uploading the files to a cloud drive and shakes Hawkeye from his mind control whammy. Deadpool then makes a big scene using Hawkeye’s old Sky-Cycle, which he crashes into a nearby building and gets the cop’s attention. The trio fight off Cat’s goons long enough to recover the drive, just in time for the cops to show up and arrest everyone except Black Cat, who got away.
Project: Communion
Clint is still working with Kate when they are sent to Antarctica under SHIELD orders to retrieve an experimental weapons cache from Hydra. The special weapons turn out to be three NuHuman children, dubbed Project: Communion. Their transformation has left them with a creepy appearance and incredibly strong telekinetic abilities. SHIELD took custody of them, but, during the debrief, Maria Hill implied to the Hawkeyes that they should probably kidnap them back. With no where else to go, the group hold up at Hawkeye’s apartment building, but eventually Hydra catches up with them. Clint and Kate do their best to hold them off, but the kids get desperate. They use their powers eviscerating the Hydra agents. Clint gets upset and tries to explain to Kate how dangerous the kids are, and the Hawkeyes surrender the kids to SHIELD. Kate, beyond angry, storms out of Clint’s life.
In one possible future, 30 years later, Kate comes calling one day, saying they made a huge mistake giving up the kids. After years of searching, Kate found them in China after they were used by The Mandarin to kill a large group of people. When the Hawkeyes confronted The Mandarin, they were easily captured. That’s when they realized that SHIELD not only used the kids to frame The Mandarin, but they sent the Hawkeyes in without a lifeline to take them out. The Mandarin agreed with their assessment when he revealed he was able to capture one of the children.
Clint and Kate were able to rescue the one Communion kid while Kate’s ace-in-the-hole, Noh-Var, tussled with The Mandarin. The two Hawkeyes showed up to SHIELD pretending that they were surrendering the child, when they started fighting their way through to find the other two. Kate is able to get them all to remember her, but they are killed by Maria Hill. According to Hill, they were just too dangerous. But this was only one possible future. Back in the present, Clint mans up and tells Kate they need to save the kids.
Clint planned for Kate and his brother, Barney, to pose as Hydra goons and kidnap the kids from a SHIELD compound in Colorado. Meanwhile, Clint sweet-talked his way on to the rescue team. That way he could make sure the rescue when south, and he could fake the deaths of the children. Maria begrudgingly went along with Clint’s ruse even though she saw right through it. The Hawkeyes left the kids with Barney and his new family (former tenants of Clint’s) on the island he bought with Clint’s money he took, and then they decided to go their separate ways, this time amicably.
Part Time Avenger and Civil War II
Hawkeye would find himself on a number of Avengers teams during this time.
He joined the Secret Avengers, when the team was absorbed by SHIELD under Maria Hill. He was implanted with a memory chip that would force him to forget he was part of the team around anyone who wasn’t also a member of said team.
When Sunspot took over AIM and turned it into his own Avengers team, Clint was placed on the team by SHIELD to keep an eye on them and make sure they didn’t return to their villainous roots
His old partner, Kate, would try to reform the West Coast Avengers with Clint’s blessing. He even agreed to temporary membership until she got the team off and running.
However, Clint burned a lot of bridges during the second superhero civil war. Iron Man and Captain Marvel were at odds over Profiler, a NuHuman who could see the future. In one of his visions, the Hulk went crazy, and while the rest of the Avengers argued about what to do about it, Hawkeye did what he promised Bruce Banner he would if he had to: kill the Hulk!
Partnership with Red Wolf
After killing the Hulk, Clint went on a road trip across America to clear his head and get off the grid. This proved more difficult then he expected. He gets bit by the hero bug and has been helping out where ever he can. In New Mexico, he teams up with Red Wolf to stop a company (employing Hydro-Man) stealing water from the Sweet Medicine Reservation, and Wolf, empathetic to Hawkeye’s quest to find himself, decides to tag along on his cross country journey.
They travel around taking care of crimes that aren’t Avengers level threats. Meth dealers. Truck hijackers. But every once in a while, they come across something big, like Life Model Decoy trafficking ring in Chicago. Eventually, Clint and Wolf find themselves in Dungston, Iowa. This small town is suspicious of its Avengers visitors because the town residents are secretly Skrull refugees. Clint pretty much has no idea until Super-Skrull shows up to execute the town residents. Dungston turns into a warzone and Clint, Wolf, and their new allies (Nightshade and Wheels) help the refugees stay alive until SHIELD can intervene. The town takes casualties but ultimately are allowed to continue living quietly, peacefully, and privately.
Clint and Red Wolf’s cross country trip is once again interrupted when The Grandmaster and The Challenger turn Earth into their own game board where they are pitting the Black Order against the Lethal Legion in a contest of champions. Freezing the most prominent Avengers in place, Rogue, as leader of the Avengers Unity Squad at the time, activates all available reserve members, including Clint, who brings Red Wolf along to strengthen the roster.
More Avenging
When Hydra took over the United States, Black Widow recruited Hawkeye off his road trip with Red Wolf to join the fight. He became the leader of the Underground, a secret group of heroes working against the new regime from Pantheon’s Mount in Nevada. He led a successful prison break just as Falcon and Quasar were able to turn off the Darkforce shield, enabling them to reunite all the heroes to make a final stand against Hydra’s Secret Empire.
Hawkeye was also recruited for a group of Avengers to take on Nyx. Nyx was once a Greek goddess imprisoned by Zeus, but the events of the Grandmaster and Challenger’s contest triggered the end of Zeus’ curse. Once released, she executed the entire Greek pantheon, and it was up to Voyager, Grandmaster’s daughter, to put together a team to avenge the pantheon, as she felt responsible.
Freefall
Back in NYC, Hawkeye has set his sights on The Hood’s criminal organization, hitting him where it hurts, The Hood’s money. To cover for his more ruthless than usual tactics, he dusts off his Ronin gear. This catches the ire of a few of his friends including Winter Soldier, Falcon, and Clint’s current girlfriend, Night Nurse. He is able to turn suspicion away from himself though by using a Life Model Decoy he stole to make it look like Ronin and Hawkeye were in the same place at the same time.
The Hood isn’t buying it though. He hires Bullseye to go after Clint, but Bullseye ends up stealing his Hawkeye gear and posing as him hurting Cap and killing Clint’s teenaged informant. Now, Clint wants revenge.
He catches up to Bullseye and shoots an arrow into each of his limbs. He gives the Hood’s money to Count Nefaria in exchange for a demon’s help in depowering The Hood. Without his money, The Hood’s hired muscle won’t protect him, and without his powers, The Hood can’t protect himself. So, Clint beats the crap out of him and leaves him for the cops.
In the process, Clint burned a number of bridges with NYC’s go-to heroes.
Search for Black Widow
With Black Widow off the radar for 3 months, Clint didn’t think much of it. It’s what she does, but he catches her in civilian clothes walking by a live news broadcast on the streets of San Francisco. Clint contacts Bucky, and the two agree that she never would have gotten caught on camera if she was properly undercover. So, the two decide to go check on her.
In San Francisco, Clint and Bucky surveilled her at her house. She had a fiancé and a son and appeared to be happy. Yelena had also tracked Nat down and was keeping an eye on her. She compared notes with Clint and Bucky determining that she has been brainwashed and placed here.
The trio discuss what to do, only for the villains responsible to reveal themselves. A shaky alliance of Black Widow rivals hired Arcade to create this fantasy world for her and warp her memories so that they could leave her vulnerable and give her something to lose. When one of them goes off book and tries to attack prematurely, Nat’s instincts kick in. Her memories come back to her, and she teams up with Clint and the others to protect her new family, who she has real feelings for.
Unfortunately, while they were planning their defense strategy, they were attacked. Nat’s new family is killed, or so Clint thinks. Widow and Bucky had actually created a diversion to fake her family’s death. Bucky was the only person she chose to trust with this info. He put them in a safehouse that not even Nat knows of.
When Natasha was tipped off to a situation brewing, Clint joined her and her team to investigate. They attended a dance where Natasha and Bucky maintained their cover by dancing. Clint went to get into position but when he stopped responding to comms, Natasha found him unconscious.
Redeeming Justice
After Luke Cage won the mayor’s office, the Thunderbolt soldiers were still on the streets. The anti-vigilante law was still in effect and proved controversial politically to repeal. Luke Cage was stuck with it. Rather than let the Thunderbolts continue to run rampant, he re-branded them as an official superhero team with Hawkeye returning to leadership duties. Hawkeye was unable to choose his own team and was instead saddled with a team created by a marketing algorithm.
- Ms. America
- Power Man (Alvarez)
- Persuasion
- Gutsen Glory
- Eegro the Unbreakable
- and Spectrum, placed on the team by Luke Cage
Unfortunately, the team is not the biggest success. Despite the budget they were spending, there was not a significant drop in crime. This is mostly thanks to Nightmare secretly targeting the team with psychic attacks, especially Ms. America, who he has been following since her time as a West Coast Avenger. Luckily, The Thunderbolts were able to focus as a team and hit him with everything they got.
Despite the team’s failure in the public eye, Luke Cage kept them around probationally. Clint saw it as a sign to reach out to Bobbi, who was also in New York City.
Broken Arrow
Clint was investigating the activity of weapons manufacture, KRV. They had gotten into bed with a former rival of Clint’s, Damon Dran. Together, they managed to secure two multibillion dollar deals with the US and Russia. Clint learned that Dran and KRV planned to assassinate a Russian dignitary on American soil to frame the U.S. and start a war. Clint expected them to do it publicly, however, he needed to act fast when the Russian was poisoned during his surveillance. Clint decided to shoot him with an arrow after he was killed, framing himself rather than let the world go to war.
After Clint takes the fall, he is targeted by a number of Russian assassins. He tries to lay low after surviving an explosion, hoping his apparent death gives him cover. However, Black Widow doesn’t believe he’s dead, nor does she believe he actually killed the Russian politician. She goes searching for him to help clear his name and protect him from the assassins. Unfortunately, Clint is poisoned by the newest assassin. Nat makes her recently acquired symbiote, Widow, bond to Hawkeye and work to purge the poison from his system.
The symbiote’s ability to absorb and share memories revealed the truth to Nat, who offered to escort Clint to America and deal with the consequences.

Equipment and Abilities
Though he has no superpowers, Hawkeye is still a force to be reckoned with.
He is in peak physical condition of an ordinary human, possessing exceptional strength, speed, stamina, durability, endurance, and agility. He is a world class archer, marksman, and sharpshooter thanks to advanced training by Trickshot. Hawkeye is also a talented acrobat and gymnast, performing acrobatic maneuvers that an Olympic gold medalist would envy thanks to his time in the circus. Clint was an extremely skilled and very dangerous martial artist and swordsman. He was trained by Swordsman to hold his own, and he has been trained extensively later, in hand-to-hand and weapons combat by Captain America, making him an accomplished and seasoned combatant. Hawkeye is also shown to be a fine leader, strategist, tactician and field commander, leading at least four teams.
As Ronin, Clint also shows that he can other melee weapons rather effectively with ease, along with being accurate with certain types of guns. As Goliath, Clint used Hank Pym’s “Pym Particles” to increase his height and strength. Hawkeye is also one of the very few people able to effectively handle Captain America’s shield.
Hawkeye’s most famous ability, however, is that he’s able to hurl or fire projectiles with extreme speed, accuracy and precision. He is also able to fire or throw objects against walls or other obstacles, resulting in complicated rebounding situations. Hawkeye is also known for his utilization of several “trick arrows” containing explosives, electrical discharges, nets, etc.

Sky Cycle
In addition to his bow and arrows, Hawkeye owns a flying motorcycle known as the Sky Cycle. Initially created during his time as an employee of Cross Technological Enterprises, Hawkeye has retained ownership of the various iterations of the vehicle in the years since then. The Sky Cycle grants Hawkeye a greater degree of speed and maneuverability than he usually possesses on his own, and effectively makes up for his lack of any flight-related abilities. Following the dissolution of the West Coast Avengers, Hawkeye’s former teammate War Machine had his friend Mack Mendelson create a new, upgrade Sky Cycle for Clint to use. During his time as the leader of the Thunderbolts, Clint used the Black Knight’s old Atomic Steed as his primary vehicle. His Sky-Cycle was later destroyed in a team up with Deadpool.

After the battle with the Liberators, Hawkeye tracked down and killed Black Widow, when he found out that she was a Liberator spy and behind the death of his wife Laura and their children.
Still with the Ultimates, Clint chose to retain his SHIELD codename of Hawkeye and changed his attire from inconspicuous black to purple tactical body-armor and a face-mask with a bullseye on the forehead. During this period, he also switched to primarily using firearms instead of his trademark bow and arrow. He recently revealed that unlike his base line counterpart, his aiming skills are due to him having enhanced eyesight given to him by the super soldier program. He eventually abandoned his purple costume and mask and returned to his black outfit, as well as his old arrows.

Earth-807128
In the Old Man Logan universe, the supervillains of Earth finally united to wipe out all of the planet’s heroes. During the crisis, Hawkeye and Black Widow co-led an Avengers squad that included Thor, Falcon, War Machine, Quicksilver, Black Knight and Tigra. However, the Thunderbolts, who were also part of the squad, betrayed the Avengers and helped kill Hawkeye’s team. To further the humiliation, Baron Zemo spared Hawkeye’s life, saying that there was no point in killing him now that the real heroes were all dead. 50 years later, Clint discovered that his eyesight was fading. Realizing this might be his last chance, he set off on a mission to track down and eliminate each of the traitorous former Thunderbolts. Along the way, he clashed with Bullseye, now a cyborg lawman working for the Red Skull’s fascist government.
Some time later, a now-blind Hawkeye teamed up with Logan on a trek across the Wastelands to deliver a secret package to a resistance group. Along the way, they encountered Ashley Barton, Clint’s daughter. The two former heroes eventually handed the package, a sample of the Super Soldier Serum, over to the members of the resistance. However, the rebels were revealed to be undercover S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, who then shot and killed Clint in an ambush.
Heroes Reborn/Squadron Supreme
When the world is remade with the Squadron Supreme as he Earth’s Mightiest Heroes instead of the Avengers, Hawkeye was a mercenary for hire working for Black Widow. Widow’s team was hired by Baron Zemo to work with his Siege Society to hack into Nighthawk’s computer and expose his riches and greed. In regards to personality and ability, this version of Clint is largely the same, however, he is much more motivated by money rather than heroism.
