Humbeck is an homage to the artist Fred Hembeck and is drawnn to look very similar to Fred Hembeck’s self portraits. He is killed by Lobo. In a later issue of Legion of Super-Heroes (also drawn by Giffen), the words “I killed Fred Humbeck” appear in the filigree of a panel border.
