After “Iron-Hat” Ferris squealed on known gangsters Mitch and Heist, Specs decides to punish the stool pigeon by welding a medieval “mask of shame” around Ferris’ head. Trapped behind the mask, Ferris can’t go to his criminal associates, who would kill him, nor the police, who’d arrest him. Now a marked fugitive, he cracks under the strain and commits a series of “iron”-themed robberies.
Politician Henry Kendall makes much of this in his campaign to unseat the current District Attorney. Kendall later encounters Ferris in an ally way and attempts to manipulate the Man in the Iron Mask. After several more “iron” themed robberies Batman discovers that Kendall has kidnapped Ferris and taken on the Iron Mask persona because Ferris refused to help shame the DA. Still wearing the mask, Kendall runs from Batman and is struck by lightning. Kendall dies and Ferris’ final fate is left unknown.
