His birth was depicted in the first episode. He was the illegitimate son of King Harald and Sigrid. Hagbard, his maternal grandfather, had him abandoned in the wilderness to die. He was surrounded by wolves but saved by Kol the Wise. Kol recognized signs that Odin had plans for Ivar but whether they were benevolent or not was left a mystery to be determined in later episodes. He was adopted by Kol in New Comics #2.
