Jake was already in jail when his mutant powers manifested during a fight with another prisoner. He was moved to a mutant-specific area of the prison as a consequence and met Cyclops who was also incarcerated. Cyclops gave Jake hope that in the future he would be able to enroll in the Jean Grey School for mutants. However, he was shortly murdered by other anti-mutant prisoners causing Scott to seek revenge by arranging for them to be abandoned in Limbo.
