Withers retired in 1947 to marry. She returned to acting in the film “The Giant” (1956) but only in a supporting role. She had more success in television commercials, playing “Josephine the Plumber” and advertising the Comet cleanser throughout the 1960s and 1970s. Both before and after her Plumber appearances, Wither played parts in various television series like “The Munsters” and the “Love Boat”. But usually only for one or two episodes in each. By the 1990s, Withers had turned to voice acting, most prominently in Disney’s “Hunchback of Notre Dame” (1996) and its sequel “Hunchback of Notre Dame” (2002). In both she was playing Laverne the Gargoyle.
