Jebediah Springfield was really the corsair Hans Sprungfeld, a literal silver tongued pirate. After his name change, he travelled along with Shelbyville Manhattan to found a new settlement. Springfield and Shelbyville split after Shelbyville advocated cousin marriage among his followers, something Jebediah opposed. After the split Srpingfield founded the city where the Simpson family resides centuries later.
