Jerry Tumbler is one of the three main characters in the Buck Danny comic book published in its early days in Spirou’s Journal.
Lacking the charisma of Buck Danny or the comedic effect of Sonny Tuckson, Tumbler is the more low-key character of the trio. The writers sometimes make him play a leading role, but he usually stays in the shadows. However, his skills and seriousness are as appreciable and beneficial as his sense of humor is.
It is in the album La Revanche des Fils du Ciel that the three future friends meet. The first reports are strained because Tumbler, then seasoned captain in the 14th USAAF, viewed with a very negative light the arrival of Commander Buck Danny who became squadron leader, a position he coveted.
His resentment immediately turns into a desire for revenge that he does not hide. With firmness and frankness, he expresses it to Danny. Tumbler’s hatred of his leader does not undermine his loyalty, however. And these qualities will allow, at the very end of La Revanche des Fils du Ciel, a reconciliation which will seal between the two pilots a friendship as unwavering as it is definitive.
