Joe Two Beans first appears as an “inscrutable native American”, who will not speak or fight, but is nevertheless on a landing craft heading into the Battle of Guadalcanal.
When Sawdust Smith bets his seargent he can get Joe to speak, the two are thrown together through thick and thin.
They fight together through the Pacific Theatre of World War Two.
