John Lackland (1166 – 1216) was Lord of Ireland from 1185 to 1216 and King of England from 1199 to his death. He was the youngest child of Henry II of England and Eleanor of Aquitaine. He was married to Isabella of Anguleme and was father to five children, including his successor Henry III.
John’s reign was plagued by wars with France and Wales, conflict with the Papacy and struggles with the English aristocracy. By the time of his death Prince Louis of France (later Louis VII)I had been offered the throne.
