This article is about the third and current person to use the name Killer Frost, Caitlin Snow. For the first person to use that name, see Crystal Frost. For the second, see Louise Lincoln.
Origin
A young scientist, Dr Caitlin Snow was sent by S.T.A.R. Labs to one of their Arctic outposts, working on their Self-sustaining Thermodynamic Ultraconductor engine following the death of its creator, Louise Lincoln. After finishing the engine she was attacked by her fellow scientists, revealed to be HIVE agents, and trapped inside the engine. Attempting to escape she became doused in coolant and electrocuted by the overloading ultraconductor, which radically altered her body and gave her the ability to control cold. She discovered that she had to feed on the warmth of others to survive. Searching for the cure to her constant, gnawing hunger, she found that only Firestorm’s heat could return her to her human state.
Creation
Caitlin Snow was created by Dan Jurgens. She made her first appearance in The Fury of Firestorm: The Nuclear Man #19.
Major Story Arcs
Problems Multiplied
Killer Frost joins forces with several other enemies of Firestorm to attack him. She successfully imprisons him and his mother in an ice structure, but is interrupted by Multiplex. She joins in the fight against Major Force, and freezes him solid after he is rendered unconscious by Black Bison. Firestorm partially imprisons her in concrete, and she is taken into custody by the government.
Forever Evil
Initially overwrought at the apparent death of Firestorm, and thus her last hope of curing her condition, Killer Frost seeks Martin Stein, who had created the Firestorm Matrix. She quickly overwhelms Stein, but is attacked by Steve Trevor, and the pair fight until Stein shoots her with a shotgun. The three soon realise they have a goal in common, and pool their knowledge and resources to locate Firestorm. She proposes using the Crime Syndicate’s coin, but realises too late that the coin has allowed the other villains to track them. Escaping, the group teleports to ARGUS‘ ruined headquarters, where they discover the need to locate the Lasso of Truth. They travel to New York, where they are attacked by Cheetah and her Menagerie. Already weak due to her growing hunger, Frost is easily rendered unconscious, and begins to melt. She is able to steal heat, escape captivity, and freeze the Menagerie. She quickly becomes embroiled in a fight with Doctor Light, who is defeated by Trevor. The pair take the Lasso to rescue the Justice League members who have been trapped in Firestorm.
Justice League vs Suicide Squad
Captured and inducted into the Suicide Squad, Killer Frost accompanies the team on the mission that soon becomes a confrontation with the Justice League. During the fighting she steals Superman‘s life force, enabling her to defeat the League single-handed. During the fighting and subsequent clashes with Maxwell Lord and Eclipso she shows herself to have heroic intentions. She creates an ice crystal that refocuses Superman’s heat vision, removing Eclipso from Lord and saving the world. She is removed from the Squad and invited to join the League.
Alternate Versions
The Flash: Season Zero
Caitlin Snow appears as a main character in this comic book adaptation of the television series.
Powers and Abilities
Caitlin Snow possesses the power of cryokinesis. She is able to absorb heat energy from virtually any source, store it in her body, and transmute it into ice. Through this, she can generate and control fields of cold, and create ice structures and weapons of various sizes. She can generate freezing gusts of wind, and reduce the body temperatures of those around her until they freeze to death. She is permanently covered in a layer of permafrost. A heat vampire, she is driven to consume the heat of others, which will generally kill them, in order to sustain her own life and to power her cryokinetic abilities; this need is very powerful and maddening. She possesses a genius-level intellect, and is particularly skilled in the fields of thermodynamics and mechanical engineering. Her status as a heat vampire leaves her with a critical weakness. In areas with little to no heat to absorb, her powers are effectively useless.
