Kotah was built as a guardian to the vault of the Ancients. His job was to prevent any knowledge to leave from the planet. When Goa’uld Sobek attempted to access the vault Kotah was reactivated and destroyed his ship along with Sobek. Since then he has stand over the Stargate to prevent any outward travel. When Daniel Jackson came to the planet, he once reassured Kotah that everything was fine in the vaults when he showed it that he access the vaults as intended. But when Raffa destroyed some of the vaults in attempt to redirect Kotah from Stargate and escape, Daniel used the acquired knowledge from the vaults to deactivate Kotah.
